Assalaamu alaikum,

I have used a slightly different chart that I posted a while back. I have reproduced that below with the difference from Jannah's list in parentheses. Hmmm. I will have to stick to one.

a, i, u = alif
' = hamza
b = baa
t = taa
th = thaa
j = jeem
h = haa
kh = khaa
d = daal
z = dhaal (dh)
r = raa
z = zaay
s = seen
sh = sheen
s = saad
dh = daad (d)
t = taa
zh = zhaa (dh)
' = ayn
gh = ghayn
f = faa
q = qaaf
k = kaaf
l = laam
m = meem
n = noon
h = haa
w = waaw
y = yaa
Long vowels = aa, ee, oo

salam,

mona i've seen that one before and it doesn't make much sense to use it since we can't reproduce those little dots underneath and also the Qaf should not be transliterated to g!!!

Asim for the differences I say we compromise:

these are the letters we have problems with cause they can't be transliterated perfectly:

-haa and heh = they are both transliterated as H but there isn't anything we could really do to change that. (so let's do captial H for the haa and lowercase h for heh)

-seen and saad = both transliterated as S  (so let's do lowercase s for seen and capital S for saad)

-taa and toh = both T (lowercase t for taa and capital T for Toh)

now

dhaal (as in daal, thaal, ra)
zeh  (as in ra, zaa, seen)
daad (as in saad, daad, toh)
zhoh (as in toh, zhoh, 'ayn)
is where we got big problems
ack!!

here's what i made up what do u think?

That looks good Jannah (I know you didn't ask me, but what the heck!)  But this means that from now on, you should refrain from capitalizing the first letter of the words to avoid confusion.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Looks good to me. Using upper and lowercase does remove the ambiguity. What about hamza when it comes within a word? Use the ' (apostrophe) just like ayn? Or maybe ' for hamza and 3 for ayn?

Now we need more volunteers to post references from the Quran...

Jannah, I was looking at the transliteration chart closely and I noticed something:

The way you have it spelled out on the chart, the short vowels - "fatHa(t)," "kasra(t)" and "Damma(t)" - are to be transliterated "aa", "ee" and "oo" respectively.  Whereas long vowels - "alif", "yaa" and "waaw" - are to be transliterated "a", "i" and "u" respectively.

Should it be the other way around?

Short vowels - a, i, u
Long vowels - aa, ee, oo

We have actually been implementing the latter rule so far.  But you probably should make that change in the chart itself.

Wassalamu alaikum.
