2.148 To each is a goal to which Allah turns him; then strive together (as in a race) towards all that is good. Wheresoever ye
are, Allah will bring you together. For Allah Hath power over all things.

1. The competition is a quiz on all the Quranic words we have been learning over the last few months. They appear in this forum, as well as the old message board. Inshallah I'll post a summary of all the words when I get a chance.

2. On midnight eastern standard time on Sept 30 (between saturday and sunday) the quiz will be posted.

3. Each person will post their answers. (btw you have to be registered on this board in order to do that)

4. The person with the most correct answers that posts within 10 minutes of midnight wins. In the event of a close tie, the one who posts first wins.

5. In the event that the jannah.org server is down or something happens, the competition will be rescheduled inshallah.

6. Fluent Arabic speakers are disqualified sorry :)

7. The winner will receive a brand new original Abu Bakr Ash Shaatri Quran CD in the mail as well as knowledge of more of the Quran.

Hmm I don't know... UK, International ppl what do you think??

Ahhh how bout this... the UK gets a separate time, same day different test.

And then we compare the higest UK score versus the highest US score and winner takes all !!!

The great competition across the Atlantic.. of course the US will win right guys ;)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Australians? It should be Sunday afternoon, like 2 or 3 pm, in Australia. That should be fine, I think.

For people in the Gulf, it will be around 7 am.

We should be covering all the words from the old and this board. Otherwise, it would be too easy!

Wasalaam.
Are you ready???

Assalamu alaikum,

So, how many of you that live in America are up for the quiz??  I wanna see what kind of competition I'm up against!

You only got a week left!  Who's ready?  Who's not?  Asim, Arshad, I'm counting on you guys to give me some competition here!

:)

Wassalamu alaikum.

Assalaamu alaikum,

I will be ready inshallah. The interest seems to have waned. Maybe everyone is busy studying! :)

I sure hope so!  Warning to the procrastinators: the list is longer than it seems.  If you haven't even looked at it by now (ahem, se7en), you're in serious trouble :)

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

I don't think I'm taking the quiz.. you know, to give the rest of ya a chance ;)
(the real reason:  I'm a loser who hasn't studied the list yet)

Se7en, I suggest you reconsider.  If it's any comfort, I haven't exactly "studied" it yet either!

Assalamu alaikum,

I have a question about the rules.  Many of the words have more than one meaning in English.  Will it be enough if we only provide one meaning in the quiz?  Or do we have to be able to provide ALL the equivalent words in English???

one is ok, they are pretty much the same meanings, different shades of the same thing

Assalamu Alaikum,

I think Brother Arsalan should be disqualified!  From what I've noticed, he knows quite a bit of Arabic.

Brother Arsalan- this is getting back at ya for suggesting to disqualify "Arabs" in a previous thread.  I was so annoyed.

And to whoever made the rules, rather than excluding people from this friendly competition, you could have tried to keep it open to all while restricting eligibility for the prize to those who are not fluent in Arabic.

walaikum salaam wrt,
sr mona i think what arsalan meant was that those who are fluent in arabic should be disqualified, because of course they have a big advantage. they have not been studying the words as we are going along, they would just come in and take the test... but if there is somone who is "Arab" but does not know Arabic fluently and has learned the words.. of course they should participate inshallah.

btw the only reason we are doing this is to encourage each other to study and learn and compete in learning our deen

Assalamu alaikum,

Actually, I'm not even sure if I'll be around during the time of the quiz.  There's a program by Dr. Badawi and Shaker el-Sayyed in Houston on that night, and I don't know when I'll get back.

Don't worry, even if I take the quiz, I'm sure I won't win!

And no, I don't know much Arabic at all.  Only from what I have learned from constantly comparing translations with the Arabic text, and my familiarity with Urdu (which is similar to Arabic) ... and some elementary Arabic education in Sunday school back when I was in high school!

Wassalamu alaikum.

Assalaamu alaikum,

So Arsalan, you have already thought up an excuse for dodging the quiz :)

But seriously, who would be taking it? As the quiz will be posted at 12 everybody who wants to can participate, no matter whether they are fluent in Arabic or not. Later on we can decide who the winner should be.

I haven't "studied" either (and won't have much time till Friday), so Arsalan change your mind!

Wasalaam.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Thanks for the multiple reminders! I will be taking the quiz inshallah. Hope I'm not the only one :)

Don't chicken out Arsalan ;)

Actually, everyone should take it. It is not a matter of winning or something. The quiz will give an opportunity to retain some of thw words in memory. I know that is why I will take it. Otherwise, the words would just be words on the board.

Assalamu alaikum,
How can I get a Shaatri CD without taking the quiz?  I'm not allowed to cause I speak Arabic fluently (but I'm not Arab, does that count?)  I really love Shaatri's Qira'a and I would really like to get a CD or tapes of his reading.  Any suggestions?

Assalamu alaikum,

Ok, Asim, you asked for it! Don't complain if I beat all of you now ;)

If I get back in town and on my computer by 11 pm Central time on Saturday night, then I'm game  inshaAllah.

Bring it on!  Arabic speakers, non-Arabic speakers, I don't care!  That Shaatri CD is mine!

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

Going over the list (finally), I realized something.  There are some words that are confusing the way they are written.  Example: Aleem.  Is it `Aleem (with an ayn) or Aleem (with an alif)?  Both words are there in Arabic.  Of course, I can find out by looking at the verses that Asim mentions for each word, but I just wanted to point it out so that the questions are not ambiguous on the quiz.

Please make a clear distinction between alif & ayn, daad and daal, dhaa and zaa, etc. on the quiz.

Jazak Allahu khairan.

Arsalan it is indeed unfortunate that we can't get the words in arabic script up there somehow. Anyway.... the usual way i transliterate is

a = alif
'a = 'ayn

d= daal
dh= dhaad

z = za
th = thaa
