Astro World (ICNA)

Assalamoalykum,

ICNA has been holding an event for the Muslims across the United States at astro world. They held one here in Houston and it was a lot of fun. As soon as you walked in, there were tables set up with ICNA broachers on it and brothers ready to answer your questions about the events of the day. Muslims prayed Zuhar, Asr, and Maghrib together. It was a beautiful day. Muslims from all walks of life and from all nationalities praying under one roof--the open gray-blue sky, with the green grass dotted with small violet flowers beneath their feet. A cool wind was blowing, the kind of wind that you wish would blow everyday, it was one of those rare days that Houston gets. When the air feels crisp and *clean,* and there is no sign of humidity anywhere, no heaviness in the air, that you normally literally feel.

Some prayed with their shoes on, some took them off. Some brought their prayer rugs with them, most did the sajdah on the grass tickling their faces. The mood was really light hearted and everyone was all smiles. Strangers greeted each other with salams, handshakes, hugs and smiles. The people who have known each other all their lives greeted each other with such enthusiasm as if they hadn't seen each other for years.

Many people wore their national clothes. After each prayer, the people sat on the grass and listened to speeches by youth. Br. Kashif made a nice speech and so did Br. Fawad. Then after the talks, people went to get some thrills. There were two halal food stands and a stand selling Islamic videos and tapes. Everywhere there were huge banners with verses from the Qur'an and with the website www.whyislam.org advertised on them.

The adhan was said on the PA system, and so wherever you were, in line for a ride or eating at some place, you could hear it. Then they gave you a five minute warning to come rushing for the prayer. After maghrib prayer three speeches were to be held consecutively, but it started to rain and since it was in the open the program was cancelled and everyone rushed home.  :(

Personally, I would have stood soaking in the rain to listen to some words of wisdom but.......

But all in all it was good.

I hope that they do it again next year and this time no rain or inside some building or something.

Assalamu alaikum,

Just to clarify - ICNA has been holding this event across the United States at Six Flags.  The Six Flags in Houston is called "Astroworld" (in honor of the Houston Astros baseball team).

Saleema, tell us about Nujoom.

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Hey, I went to the Muslim Youth Day organized by ICNA at the Six Flags in Jersey.  Alhamdulillah, it was really nice, the weather was beautiful,  it was well organized, and I got to meet up with a lot of people.  I had an awesome time because I went with my crew (let's hit the bungee jump next time ;)), but the behavior of a lot of people there was wack.

Assalamoalykum,

There were some wacks over here too but I have always known these wacks so it was no big distraction.  :)  I wanted to go bungee jumping but by the end of the day I was all out of money. I took 60 dollars with me and I don't know where it went!??!!!

You know what? This lady that was selling the tickets lied to me. I can't believe she'd do that. She was trying to sell me the tickets and I told her that my family had already bought theirs and that I had a season pass. She said that on this day they won't take it and I asked her if she was just saying that or if she knew for a fact, she said she knew for a fact, so I bought the ticket and guess what? They were taking season passes and of course I couldn't return the ticket and get my money back.  :(

Bungee jumping?  ???

I would be very scared, jumping off some tall building with a rope around my leg.  What if that rope broke?  Actually I think I would be too scard to look down, who wouldn't be?

I would imagine that none of the brothers here have tried bungee jumping, well maybe Lightningatnite.  ;)

Assalamoalykum,

Bhaloo you came out and said I bet none of the brothers on here has ever fought, and then out came Arsalan with his story followed by jawadio's.   :)  Now, you have never gotten into a fight, and never have bungee jumped either... Live it up! Life is too long. Have some fun. Do wild things.......  :)

It's not scary. I saw a fifth grader do it from up a 1000 feet. Too bad I ran out of money.  :(
It's just like a roller coaster ride.

Assalamu alaikum,

I have never bunjee jumped.  The reason is because I have yet to find a companion who would do it with me.  Every time I go to a theme park with a group of people, I'm the only one who wants to do bunjee jumping.  And there's no way I'm getting in that long line by myself.  It's no fun that way.

Saleema - tell us about the Nujoom yaa ukhti!  The Nujoom!!!

Wassalamu alaikum.

Arsalan, I don't blame you friends for not wanting to bungee jump. :)  'Don't tell me you guys have gone skydiving?

Last year I went to the Seattle Space Needle, I think its about 800 feet up in the air.  Anyways when I got to the top there and looked down from the top of the tower I was so scared.  I put my hand on the handrail and looked over the edge and said oh oh and then stepped back immediately.  'Don't tell me I'm the only one that is scared of heights here?  ???

We have this Six Flags theme park out here, and they have a ride called the Viper.  It goes up 17 stories and then drops down and goes through loops.  When it gets near the top, I close my eyes, but when it goes down I open them.

Assalamoalykum,

Ok I will admit that I am scared of one ride. the starship. I only went on it once and I will never go on it again. I bit back tears on that ride and I kept repeating the shahadah over and over again. It was scary. I really thought that I was going to die.

But on all the other rides its really fun! I never close my eyes and don't hold on to anything. What's really fun is that you get to scare the daylights out of your friends. I kept shouting Allahu Akbar! on one ride and told my friend no to look down and she started sweating!! It was funny! :D

Brother Arsalan, what are you talking about?

Assalamu alaikum,

Starship is scary!  I'm sure everyone knows what it is.  It's in all the theme parks that I've been to (even the one in Clifton in Karachi :))  It's this ship that swings back and forth.

Anyway, I was asking about the Nujoom.  The flyer said there was supposed to be an Islamic singers' group called al-Nujoom present at the park to entertain the people with Islamic songs.  I was just wondering if you saw/heard them.  If you did, were they any good?  And what kinds of instruments did they use, if any?

Assalamoalykum,

I didn't hear anything about a concert nor did I see any concert taking place. It started to rain so maybe it was cancelled since we were in the open.

I didn't hear about the one in New Jersey.  But I wanted to do the bungee jump also but I kept thinking what if the rope broke?

There was this ride in Six flags in Mass I went to and they had the Batman & Robin ride.  That was awesome! the drop was something else.  They also had a ride where they pull you to the top of the park (way way up there) and then drop you.  A bungee jump sitting down although your seat never meets the seat until you get to the bottom  that was fun although the 'tough' sister I was with chickened out for a second ride.  She said it scared the daylights out of her. :)  that was funny

Salam,

I once did this thing called "sky coasting."  It's kind of like bungee jumping, except a little different :).  It starts on the ground and you climb in to this coat like contraption that is attached to a long cord (The long cord is attached to another downward sloping cord that runs like a telophone line between two poles).  You get strapped in and then get pulled lots and lots of feet above the ground.  You're in a "flying" position--you know, like superman!(You're lying face down, not vertical like bungee jumping) and then BOOM, you drop and go coasting down along the downward sloping cord.  And just like in bungee jumping, the initial drop is the worst, but its still far from being over--you then keep coasting at high speeds and see the whole city underneath you..its amazing!  But, you're allowed to go with a partner, so I had my older brother strapped in next to me, making it a little less scary.  Anyways, it was a lot of fun.

Ok, take care,wassalam
