Assalaam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

Help me in this one please.
I need as much information as possible on why Islam prohibits us from eating pork. I have some information but I need to make it more  understandable to a collegue, who is not accepting my meagre explanations and he is kinda testing my patience  :-/       Grrrr.

wlm,
I had this same discussion with a co-worker once.  She brought up the fact that Trichina a deadly parasite that pork carries no longer exists anymore.  That that was in the "old" days.  At the time I really didn't know how to respond.  Then I was told that another reason we can't eat pork has to do with Noah's (Nuh as) Ark.  See the ark was big, yet had no sanitation.  So, the pig was chosen to clean it.  He ate all the filth, dirt, etc on the ark.  So, from that point on the pig was prohibited for us to eat.  Correct me if I said anything wrong.

I heard the same thing as Destined with regards to pigs eating human waste on Noah's ark, (maybe it was the same email) ?   But no reference was given so Allahu alam if that was true.

They did some scientific study and found that pigs have a high concentration of urine (maybe it was uric acid) in their blood as compared to other animals.  People eating pork as a result have a higher rate of rheumatism (is that how you spell it?  My spelling is as bad as Saleema's, maybe? ???).

Its prohibited in the Bible as well, but as to the reason why, Allahu alam.

Personally i think those are the wrong approaches to take. Issues like why don't you eat pork and why do the women wear hijaab, and why don't you drink alcohol are all side issues compared to the main issue. Is this what God wants of us? If we can prove to them that God exists and that the Qur'an is His Final revelation to mankind, the simple answer is that we stay away from pork beause that is what Allah has told us to do. I think that dealing with THAT issue is more important, and there are sufficient proofs to back up those claims.

The common trap that Muslims fall into is saying "we don't eat pork because the pig is dirty." OK, what if the person suggests that you take a pig from birth, and place it in a hygienic place from day one. You clean out its living quarters every day, you give it only clean food, and then you kill it and cook it properly to kill off all bacteria. Then the pig isn't unclean is it? Would you eat it? What are you going to say then?

Another angle to look at this from is to say that this is the command of God to Muslims, Jews AND Xtians. There is a small booklet authored by Shabir Ally which shows how even the Bible has made pork haram.

Kashif is right. Allah swt said not to so we don't.
When people will insist and bring up the trichnosos?sp. With a "tongue in cheek" attitude, I remind them that is a recent discovery, and I wonder what scientists haven't discovered yet...

Assalamu alaikum,

Surah Al-Baqarah(2), ayah 173

He has only forbidden you what has died by itself, blood and pork, and anything that has been consecrated to something besides God.  Yet anyone who may be forced to do so, without craving or going too far, will have no offence held against him; for God is Forgiving, Merciful.  (Translated by Thomas B. Irving)
