A dua I was taught is:

Dhahabbadh dhamaaoo, wabtallatil urooq, wathabitil ajroo inshaAllah.

which means:

the thirst has gone and the veins are quenched, and reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.

In my lil dua book, Fortification of the Muslim through Remembrance and Supplication from the Quran and Sunnah, (long name for a little book:) it also says:

Ibn Abi Mulaykah, rahimaAllah, said, I heard Abdullah ibn 'Umar say when he broke his fast:

Allahumma innee as'aluka be rahmtikal latee wa se'aat kulla shayinn anntaghfirlee

which means:

O Allah I ask You by Your mercy which envelops all things that you forgive me.

Assalamu alaikum,

This is the du'aa that I was taught:

{S = saad
s = seen
T = Twaa as in Taariq
t = taa
3 = ayn}

Allaahumma innee laka Sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa 3alayka tawakkaltu, wa 3alaa rizqika afTartu.

By the way, it should be noted that the time right before Maghrib is a time when prayers have a very high probability of being accepted.  Moreover, any du'aa that a fasting person makes while breaking his fast is also accepted.  So make use of this time.  Many people socialize and chit-chat right before iftaar time.  This time should instead be spent in supplication and remembrance of Allah swt.

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

I believe our imam told us that this is the strongest one:

The best supplication is the one authentically reported from the Prophet, , that he used to say when breaking his fast:

"Thahaba aDh-Dhama'u wabtallatil-`urooqu wa thabata-l-ajru inshaa'a Allah".

Which means:

The thirst is gone, the veins are moisted and the reward is certain, if Allah wills. [Abu Dawood, al-Baihaqee and others;Hasan]

As salaamu alaykum, sis' Jannah is correct for the only confirmed hadeeth which the Prophet {salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam} would say at the time of breaking his fast is "Thahaba aDh-Dhama'u wabtallatil-`urooqu wa thabata-l-ajru inshaa'a Allah". Which means
 :The thirst is gone, the veins are moisted and the reward is certain, if Allah wills. [Abu Dawood, al-Baihaqee and others" as indicated by the sister.
      As for the narration " Allaahumma innee laka Sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa 3alayka tawakkaltu, wa 3alaa rizqika afTartu - O Allah for thy sake i have fasted and i broke the fast with the food that comes from thee", this is found in the sunan of Abu Dawud "mursilan" i.e. the narrator of this hadeeth, Abu Zahrah, left out the name of the sahabah who he narrated the hadeeth from, and the scholars of hadeeth classify a "mursil" hadeeth as from one of the many catergories of weak hadeeth, hence the hadeeth is weak, thus the only authentic hadeeth for breaking the fast is the one previously mentioned, and Allah knows best. (check Zad ul mad, and sharh sunan Abu Dawud as reference)

Assalamu alaikum,

Jazak Allahu khairan Br. assing.  I am not surprised :)  This du'aa is on every Tom, Dick and Harry's tongue in Karachi during Ramadan.  The reason is because this du'aa is shown on tv at the time of iftaar along with the Maghrib adhaan, and it is also published in the newspapers along with the reference of Abu Dawood.  And judging from past experience (that anything rampant in our culture needs to be double-checked for authenticity) I should have known better!

Once again, jazak Allahu khairan for that info.

Now I got a du'aa AND the ayaat in Surah Al-Jumu'ah to memorize!

Don't worry br. Arsalan you are not the only one who encounters these types of situations, where i am from {Trinidad} it is the same thing, and even i, myself used to say that dua until i found out better, because most of the muslims in Trinidad come from India as indentured labours during the early 19th century and Alhamdulillah they brought islam with them, but they also had some stuff that wasn't too righteous deen-wise, but overall alhamdulillah who giuded us to the sunnah when before we misguided. Hence,we should use this oppurtunity, espcially during this blessed month to teach and call othesr to what is right and authentic as Allah informs us in surah Al Asr  " By Al-'Asr (the time).
2.
Verily! Man is in loss,
3.
Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth and recommend one another to patience. (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allâh's Cause during preaching His religion of Islâmic Monotheism or Jihâd, etc.)."

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Does anyone know the hadith regarding the fact that duas are accepted just before Maghrib?  Is this just in Ramadan or generally throughout the year?

slm,

Not a single prayer made by a fasting person at the time of breaking fast is rejected.
