I was reading through your page and I found info on Tariq Ibn Zayid. I haven't been abl to find anything on him
and I picked him for a big project because the little bit about him i read i thought was extremely interesting. I
am not Islamic but it is an option for me and I thought if I could learn a litle more about the history of it it could
help me decide. If you could tell me where to look on the web for information about it i would greatly
appreciate it. Thank You for your time.
                                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                                Jennifer

CONQUEST OF SPAIN
711-756 C. E.

TARIQ B ZIYAD

When the Muslims became masters of North Africa, they stood at the threshold of Spain, for only a small arm of the sea separated North Africa from Spain. The Muslim Governor General of North Africa, Musa b Nusayr dupted his lieutenant, Tariq b Ziyad, to undertake a reconnoitering expedition in Spain.

In 711 C. E., Tariq with a Berber force of 12,000 men sailed across the straits, and landed at the base of a huge rock, which came to be known after him as Jabal-I-Tariq or Gibraltar.

The first encounter of Muslims took place with the forces of Theodomir the Governor of the southeastern provinces of Spain. In this battle the Spaniards suffered a serious defeat.

The next encounter took place in July 711 C. E. at Jeroz in the valley of Lakka on the bank of the Guadlite near Madina Sidonia. The Spanish forces were led by Roderick, the Gothic King of Spain. The Spanish forces numbered about one lakh (million) while the Muslim forces numbered 12,000 only.In spite of this disparity in strength, the troops of Roderick were dispersed as if by a miracle, and Roderick himself drowned in the river Guadlite. Thereafter the Muslim forces marched to the capital of Toledo, and occupied it without much resistance.

With his irresistible cavalcade, Tariq marched further a field, and cities after cities fell before the Muslim arms like autumn leaves. Musa b Nusayer the Governor General of North Africa instructed Tariq to halt his advance. In spite of that Tariq continued his advance. He held that once a halt was made the momentum would be lost. By the end of 711 C. E. almost one half of Spain had been conquered by Tariq.

Hello Jennifer,

well, I can't translate what I have on him but this is what I found on him. He burnt their ships on purpose so that the Muslims would not think of returning home just because the King had a bigger army. Read on.

I got this from the above url.

TARIQ IBN ZIYAD General

Moosa ibn Nusayr, the governor of North Africa was approached by Count Julian of Spain with complaints of cruel treatment by King Roderic. As a result of this the Muslim ruler despatched General Tariq ibn Ziyad with an army of 7,000 soldiers across the Straits to Spain, in 711 A.C.

General Tariq was a seasoned warrior well known for his indomitable courage and bravery. He was also looked upon as a hero by the soldiers who were proud to serve under his leadership.

The narrow stretch of sea separating Spain from the African coast was crossed by Tariq and his men in small boats. They were ready for battle as soon as they landed on the shore.

King Roderic of Spain was both surprised and angry at the daring of the Muslims. Placing himself at the head of a huge army, the king publicly took an oath that he would crush the invaders and throw them into the sea through which they had come.

As Roderic drew nearer to the coast with his formidable army, the Muslim soldiers, began to show uneasiness, for they were on the coast of a strange country and the enemy also heavily outnumbered them.

Tariq at once noticed the uneasiness among his soldiers, but he knew that this was not caused by any feeling of fear, for they were perfectly trained soldiers, and the heroes of many famous battles. They were waiting for his lead to reassure them.

General Tariq acted quickly. Uttering a short prayer to Allah, the General gave orders that will always be remembered in the military history of the world. He ordered that all the boats that brought him and his men across the straits be burnt.

When this was done, he turned to his soldiers and said:

"Brothers in Islam! We now have the enemy in front of us and the deep sea behind us. We cannot return to our homes, because we have burnt our boats. We shall now either defeat the enemy and win or die a coward's death by drowning in the sea. Who will follow me?"

The soldiers gave a mighty cry of "Allahu Akbar" and rushed towards the enemy like a whirlwind driving everything with them.

The Spaniards turned and ran bewildered and defeated leaving the battlefield to the Muslims.

This marked the beginning of the Muslim conquest of Spain in the middle of the 8th century of the Christian era. Muslims ruled the country for hundreds of years so gloriously and well that Moorish Spain became the fountain-head of culture and civilisation for the whole continent of Europe.

General Tariq Ibn Ziyad will ever live in the memory of men for the famous rock on the Spanish mainland still bears his name: Jabal-at-Tarig, (the Mountain of Tariq)- Gibraltar.

Four thumbs up for this url. talks about how the muslims instead of opressing the inhabitants of Spain, they liberated them and gave them freedom.

anyway, that's what i could find so far.
good luck with the project.

Peace,
Saleema
