[MADRASA] Manner of praying for women???

slm,

Can someone set the record straight here, I'd really appreciate it.

I was at Taraveeh prayers yesterday and I guess this woman was watching me pray.  After I was done she told me that I was praying incorrectly.  I put my elbows close to my body and on the ground.  She continued to tell me this is wrong and that we are ordered to raise our elbows.  But I've read before that this is directed to *men*.  So, I brought my copy of Bahisti Zewar (Heavenly Ornaments) with me today, and showed her where it says that *men* have to keep their elbows on the ground and woman do not.  But she said she never heard of this and that she's from Saudi Arabia and all the men and woman pray alike.

I read this today, but it doesn't say anything about women...

Ref: The Prophet's Prayer

He used to order likewise, saying, When you perform sajdah, place your palms (on the ground) and raise your elbows110, and Be level in sujood, and none of you should spread his fore- arms like the spreading of a dog (in one narration: like a dog spreads them)111. In a separate hadeeth, None of you should rest arms on the ground the way a dog rests them.112

Assalamu alaikum,

According to Shaikh Naseeruddin al-Albani (rahimahullah), there is no difference between the manner in which a woman is supposed to pray and the manner in which a man is supposed to pray.  This means that, to answer your question, the woman should separate the elbows from the rest of the body and the ground.

If I remember correctly, the reference for this is Shaikh Albani's book, Sifah Salaat-un-Nabee (The Prophet's Prayer Described).

However, I do know that the popular "Hanafi" way of prayers for women is as you are accustomed to.  I do not know if this is actually according to the *real* Hanafi madhhab or whether it's something which is simply a common practice among the Pakistanis/Indians.  I also don't know of any authentic evidence for this manner of prayers for women.

Of course, my ignorance doesn't mean that the evidence does not exist!

Wassalamu alaikum.

P.S. Bahishti Zevar contains many inauthentic narrations, as it has been said before in previous threads.

That was how I used to pray too until Aminah Assilmi corrected me. Of course I was very emabarrased and I went home very angry at my mother for teaching me to pray the wrong way.  :) When I walked into her room she was praying jus like Aminah Assilmi told me to pray. :) So I don't know where I learned to pray like that???? But anyway, yeah, the Pakistanis and the Indians pray like that. As far as I know, (and I don't know much, so verify it for your own good), that the Hanafi madhab doesn't teach to pray like that.

Also many Paki/Indians, when they go down for the Sajdah, they bring their legs and arms as close to their bodies as possible so that the posteriar isn't in the air. That is wrong too. (That's what Aminah Assilimi told us and she sited evidence but it was a long time ago and I can't remember anymore.) Aminah Assilmi told us that because the awarah of the woman is revealed more or less, the women pray behind the men and she talked some more about the Wisdom of Allah that he has a reason for doing everying.

And Bahashti Zewar does contain many unauthentic narrations.

Jazakamullah khair.

slm,
Thank you Arsalan and Saleema for responding.  I seriousely thought men and women prayed in complete opposite manners.  But I will verify this from another source, insha'allah.
Jazak-Allah

Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq has written a book titled "The Salah of a Believer in the Qur'an and Sunnah" published by the Islamic Shariah Institute in Birmingham UK.

In it he gives the references for all the daleel that state that there should be difference in the salaah between the man and the woman.

And yes it is true that a lot of the Ulama from the Sub-continent hold this view, this however should not be seen as a desi thing becuase it is the opinion of a lot of scholars all over Asia and not just the sub-continent.

For further clarrification I would urge all to read through Riyad-ul-Haq's book.

If I get the time I'll put the references in here my self.

Assalamu alaikum,

Learner, I would really appreciate it if you could give some references here.  I haven't seen this book before, and I haven't heard of this author either.

Jazak Allahu Khairan.

We had this subject last ramadan in the masjid and we were told to look for the differences with daleel, the summary was that a woman actually does try to collect herself as much as she can,by keeping her elbows nearer to her body(not on the ground, though) and when she sits she should kind of collect herself. But the putting of elbows  on the ground the way it is done by most of the sisters from the subcontinent is wrong ,there is  a  hadeeth by the priphet sala LAlhu alyhi wasallam that means :do not put your elbows down on the floor like beasts during prostating.
