Chicanos...

Salam :)

I was wondering if any brothers were into the sports that the Blessed Prophet encouraged...and if you could tell me alittle about what they're like.  Noble sports--like sword fighting, horseback riding, wrestling, etc.  I'd like to get into something because I know I need the discipline, but I don't like formalities.

I actually almost started kickboxing, but then I realized it would be co-ed!  Now, there couldn't be anything more embarassing than getting beat up by a girl. Unless of course she's Saleema, in which case its understandable :O

Brothers, Bhaloo, Arsalan, Asim, Kashif, Moe...any suggestions?

:) Salam :)

Assalam ualykum,

Very funny Lightning.

huh.I wanted to take kick boxing too, i guess not anymore, I didn't think about the whole co-ed thing. :(

Train in boxing! Mabye you will become the next Muhammad Ali--hey, you never know.  :) Or sword fighting! No but how would that be useful in these days? What are you going to get out of horseback riding? How much effort does that take? Unless maybe you are playing polo? But what a boring sport. Wrestling is cool too. But don't become like a sumo (is that what you call them) wrestlers.

That's my advise even though you didn't ask for it.

I think that you should start horse back riding. It is so much fun. And Saleema it is NOT boring, except if you do not know how to ride;)
I know that you asked your brothers, but only the sisters have replied...wonder why?

Funny ,huh, until now you are getting answers from girls.
Anyway the prophet sala Allahu alyhi wasallam said:
"Teach your children(awladakum=boys,  and in a broader sense both)
-swimming,
-aiming* and
-horse-riding."
*aiming in the hadeeth was "alrimaya" which means shooting whether arrows,spears..etc so I chose the word aiming because it means any kind including guns.

We're chicos not chicanos. ;)  Lightning what about self defense classes?  Those classes seem like they might not require that much formal training?  Those classes where you use your opponent's strength to your advantage.  I'm guessing you want to learn these skills to protect yourself?

Saleema you could probably open up a self-defense class for sisters, since you've beaten up a football player.

I've heard of people that have been robbed, and they get scared and they end up buying a gun to protect themselves and their family.  'Do you guys think that's a good idea?  Me personally I don't think I would because I would probably get nervous if someone robbed me and may accidently shoot myself.   But it seems like self defense classes might be good for those of us that haven't been in a fight before and don't know what to expect.  For example if your oponent throws a punch at you what are you supposed to do?  ???  Maybe Saleema could give us some pointers or anyone else out there that is equally qualified.

Salaam,

Yeah, I was wondering about "Chicanos" as well.  I thought "Cool!  Latino Muslims!", never mind.

For what it's worth, I study karate and I have a dream of one day opening the first Islamic dojo.  There are many parallels between the philosophy of martial arts and (what I know of) the islamic approach to violence.

Any way, self defense classes are BS.I know from experience.Well actually they do teach you some good things like to yell FIRE when you want to get any one's attention:) (try it..). But if you can't use a gun when you are not scared how can you do it when you are?
The moves they teach are like Judo...
And do not pick on Saleema it is easy to beat guys up, let alone a poor football player...do not ask me how I know.

Assalamu alaikum,

I took an archery class in college.  Rest assured that it is NOT easy to shoot an arrow at a target from far away and be accurate!  There's many technicalities involved in aiming properly.

I never learned horseback riding, but I've done it many times.  It is a lot of fun.  I loved it so much as a kid that I gave my parents a lot of pain to get me a pony as a pet!  Of course, they never got me one :(

Wrestling ... hmm.  Does wrestling with my cousins in childhood count? :)  No.  I'm not big enough to be a good wrestler.  I did take a karate course back in my high school days though.  I got to red belt, then I quit because of some circumstances.  It is definitely something I would recommend to everyone.  It keeps you in shape, physically as well as mentally.  I don't really like taekwondo (sp?) or kung fu, although some of my friends have taken both of these.

If you want suggestions, definitely think about some martial arts.  That's #1.  Then, I would strongly suggest taking some sort of a shooting class (i.e. shooting a gun).

Wassalamu alaikum.

Ruling on Boxing from Islam Q&A

My local mosque is thinking about setting up boxing classes. I wanted to know whether this is permissibile. The reason being that is there not a hadith of the Prophet (SAW) where he sees two men wrestling/ sparring and he tells them to avoid the face for we have been created in the likeness of Adam (AS)?

According to this, is it mub'ah to practice boxing with another brother and hit one another in the face?

Praise be to Allaah.

The Islamic sharee’ah permits all things that are beneficial to the body and do not harm it, and it forbids all things that may cause damage or harm to the body. The Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Your body has rights over you.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Kitaab al-Sawm, 1839)

If sports are free from things which are forbidden in sharee’ah, then practising those sports is beneficial. Boxing is an ancient sport that was practised by the Greeks.

Boxing is the worst kind of sport, and probably it does not even deserve to be called a sport, despite the fact that western nations, in particular – where boxing is widespread at a professional level – call it “the noble sport” and a form of self-defence. They forget, or overlook, the fact that the main aim of boxing is to harm one's opponent and throw him to the ground, preferably with the “decisive blow” (or “knock-out”), as they call it, which is the highest level of victory in boxing.

“Many voices have been raised in the parliaments of many countries demanding a ban on professional boxing, in view of the harm that has been caused to many boxers. Sweden has succeeded in imposing such a ban, whilst many other nations have failed to do so, despite the many injuries, and even deaths, caused to many professional boxers as a direct result of this violent sport.

The fact of the matter is that the deaths of so many boxers is the reason for many voices calling for an end to this sport, or at least the imposition of strict rules to limit its violence.”  (From Huna London magazine, issue # 413, March 1983).

Dr. Roger Whirty, the spokesman of the British Medical Council in Wales, spoke of the aims of the Council’s campaign against boxing: “We want to show everyone that boxing is an extremely dangerous sport, not only because of the increasing number of fatalities, but also because of the disabilities which affect many more times that number. In order  to achieve that, we are trying to put pressure on various official bodies to condemn this sport, and not to consider it to be a sport at all. I reiterate once again that the danger of this sport lies in the harm caused to hundreds of boxers as a result of the disabilities that they suffer.

The number of boxers who have died as a result of injuries sustained in boxing between 1945 and 1983 is three hundred and fifty.” (From Huna London magazine, issue # 413, March 1983).

The Islamic attitude towards this sport:

The principles of Islam are completely opposed to the idea of the ummah accepting this dangerous deviation as a moral or intellectual trend which would permit such violent fights between members of the ummah or of the human race as a whole.

Among these principles we may list the following:

1.                 Harm. We have already mentioned the harm and danger to human life involved in this sport, and the testimony of western specialists who are motivated by their humanitarian feelings to fight and strive to eliminate boxing from the international sporting lexicon.

2.                 Violating the sanctity of the face. Boxing is based on allowing punches to the face of one's opponent using the maximum force that one possesses. Blows to the face earn more points than blows to any other part of the body. This clearly goes against the teaching of the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as narrated by Abu Hurayrah: “When any one of you fights, let him avoid (striking) the face.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 5/215).

Al-Haafiz said: “This prohibition also includes all those who are struck for the purpose of hadd or ta’zeer punishments or discipline. According to the hadeeth narrated by Abu Bakrah and others, which was recorded by Abu Dawood and others, about the woman who had committed adultery, the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded that she should be stoned to death, and said, ‘Stone her, but avoid the face.’ (Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4/152). If that is the command in the case of one who is being punished and is going to die anyway, then the rule is even more applicable in cases of lesser severity.” See al-Fath, 5/216

Al-Nawawi said: “The scholars said: it is forbidden to strike the face because it is soft and all of a person's beauty and most of his senses are located there. If the face is hit, there is the fear that all or some of them may be destroyed or disfigured. Any defect in the face is a terrible thing because it is so prominent and obvious, and usually the person who is hit in the face will not be spared some disfigurement.” (al-Fath, 5/216).

In al-Fath, he says concerning the specific prohibition narrated in the hadeeth:

“Al-Nawawi did not discuss the details of this prohibition. It is clear that it is haraam, and this is supported by the hadeeth of Suwayd ibn Maqran al-Sahaabi, that the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw a man slap a slave (or a boy) in the face, and he said, “Do you not know that the face is inviolate?” (Muslim, 3/1280.

Salam :)

Arshad, you're right, self defense classes are important.  I used to think my saftey whistle was enough, but with girls these days... :)

Maybe Saleema and Se7en could give us a tag team training session?  Man, we could take anybody after that :) Well, maybe not a sumo wrestler :)

Haaris, doesnt 'chicanos' mean 'brothers' ?!??!  See, thats how bad my spanish is.  When I took a hike down to the local pueblo in Spain, everyone was trying to talk to me(Spanish people are really nice).  Seriously, one guy was like 'Buenos tardes!', and I said 'no comprende', and then he said 'Oh...de dónde es usted?' and I said 'NO C O M P R E N D E'.  So than he paused for a while, smiled at me, then he said "muchacho agua es el baño que pasa tardes senor...(my interpretation)"  In the end, I realized the poor guy wanted to invite me over to give me some water... :)

Sister Hiyam, there's reasons for the name change...I hate to talk about movies during Ramadhan, but Gladiator was incredible, there was this recurrent theme about the Hereafter, and it really affected me.  "What we do in life is echoed in eternity."  My signature is from the movie too.  Gladiator has his heart set on the hereafter, he lived and died for it.  He would be a perfect Muslim, if he didn't keep praying to those little GI Joes :)

If you'd like to know, 'LightningAtNite' came from something I wrote:
How can beauty weild so much power over a man's destiny, as if to utterly incapacitate his functioning?  How is beauty so easily locked up...and life so easily warped?  How can beauty thrust insanity into consciousness?  You are a lost camel in the desert.  You are a beautiful goldfish, somehow dropped in the middle of the sea.  A delicate butterfly, caught in a windstorm.  You are a single ant, clinging to the edge of a mountain, a green leaf on a tree full of red.  You are that last twinkling star before the sun rises.  A single dew drop after dawn.  A sun ray on a cloudy day.  A soft voice, when everyone else is yelling.  A smile in a room full of strangers.  A cool breeze on a hot day, the mist from a waterfall.  The spark that lights the forest.  You are lightning at night.
So then, someone calls me 'nitelite' the other day ):(  I figured let me try something a little simpler :)

Arsalan...Karate?  I took one class, and when they tried to teach me the "Tiger Claw", I was long gone :)  I think we all have an idea of what a noble sport is, so anything that involves clawing...

I like the idea of sword-fighting and horseback riding, and I think Kathy is right about boxing.  The Blessed Prophet forbade hitting in the face.  I guess because the face is the seat of our humanity, its what makes us unique.

se7en is into that self defense stuff, she comes home and I ask her to do the dishes, and she starts punching me, and then she says "NO! NO! NO! FIRE! FIRE!" I was like, ok ok I'll do them, leave me alone!

Arshad, stick to the super-soakers my bro... :)

Hiyam, I'm gonna get in trouble with my quotes!  Lets just say a FOB emailed this sister, and he tried to say in his fobbish language that he was interested in her.  It went something like this:
hello dear SISTER.

i am good brother from.  you are nice email address. i am MUSLEM. i want to friendship with you.
:)  The funniest ones are the real ones, I don't remember how it went.  But don't get me wrong, some fobs are so much better/nicer than we American folk.  Most of them are really sincere, and nice, so please sisters don't be mean to them :)

Bhaloo, those are my favorite quotes too.  But there was that vision that Gladiator kept having, of that wall and the door, and wanting to go through.  And then when he was about to die, he sees the door and the girl says "Go to them." And then he dies.

We're reading Kitab-ur-Rooh with br. Mukhtar, and so far we've read narrations of righteous people, and how they have dreams of the Unseen world.  Imagine how different we'd be if we could see the Unseen world. I wouldn't do half the things I do.

AJ, FOB is an endearing term used for people new to the country, Fresh Off the Boat.  I just realized that people make fun of them often, so I need to apologize if I did that.

Saleema, Arshad, I kept a journal when I lived in India, Manhattan, and Spain, mainly soul-searching stuff, trying to get closer to Allah the Most High.  A sister I know had the idea that, at least during Ramadhan, keep a journal each night.  Ask yourself questions each night, reflect on the state of your heart, and your relationship with Allah the Most Merciful.  Think about Allah before you go to sleep, after you close your eyes.

Ok, for the married brothers only, I bet your wives are pretty mad at you for spending all this time on the message board, so I figured I'd help you guys out :)  Try these lines...

All the sugar and honey in the world couldn't match the sweetness of your voice.

Your eyes are as dark as a castle moat by midnight. Lower your drawbridge and let me cross.

If you were a tear in my eye, I wouldn't cry for fear of losing you.

"Wife, after looking at you I wish I went blind."
(Wife Is Somewhat Shocked)
"because at least then I could die knowing that the last thing I saw is the most beautiful thing on this earth."

(Pick up a flower and walk over to your wife)
"I was just showing this flower how beautiful you are."

:) Hahah you've got to be creative these days :)

I'll be going away for a little while, so just wanted to wish you all a blessed and beautiful Ramadhan and Eid.  Please forgive me for my many overflowing faults.  You are all amazing wonderful brothers and sisters.

Arshad: Me and you, sword fight, next Thursday :)

Yeah, I don't like planes either Saleema.  Do you know that plane that crashed in Taipei a few months back?  Well I have taken that same flight number and route once before.  Once I was in a Singapore plane taking off from Japan (on my way back from Pakistan) and this bird got caught in one of the engines.  It was scary, the plane started to fall but then it was ok.  We broke the sound barrier on the way back because there were 200 mph tail winds to help us along.  The plane arrived 1 and half hours earlier then expected. :)  Its just such a long flight to Pakistan.  From Los Angeles its 11 hours to Japan, 7 hours to Singapore and then 7 hours to Karachi.  :(

Speaking of scary situations, yesterday my brother was in a very scary car
accident.  Alhamdulillah,by the grace of Allah alone, he didn't get hurt.  However, he skid on some ice and his car actually flipped over,
and then flipped back. *phew*  It was a scary reminder for my family and everyone around us of how easily life can be taken away, and on that same note, how easily Allah (SWT) can save us.

May Allah help us all live each day as if it were our last. Ameen.

Some of you I have met in the streets of Spain, and others perhaps in some strange corner of New York City.  I may be speaking to you from a great distance, maybe even across oceans, in Malaysia or France.

I wonder sometimes how our roads crossed, how Allah chose for our two souls to meet somehow, somewhere.  And the more I wonder, the more I realize that our lives are not just piled up coincidences.  It seems that our lives unfold, revealing a perfectly planned out journey.  Each person we meet somehow guides us, teaches us, completes us a little more.  I would not be the same person had I not met you.

May Allah allow for our roads to cross once again, for us to travel once more, together, on this journey of ours.  The journey back to our Lord, Allah, the Most Gracious.

I'll be leaving for Umrah in a few hours, inshaAllah.  I wanted to thank you for your kindness before I left, and ask for your forgiveness.  I will make dua' for you, but please remember me in yours as well.

I pray that Allah the Most Merciful eases the difficulties you are facing, and expands your heart 1000 times.  May He make us friends in Jannah, inshaAllah :)

Wassalamualaikum, with peace,

Faisal

Asalaamu aleikoum,

Lightningatnight/Gladiator, I hope that your Umrah went well and Jazaka' Allah Khairun for your thoughts for us all.  Please let us know how your Umrah went.

Uzer: I had the opportunity to see 'Gladiator' over the break and, well, hmm, it was okay I suppose (I'm probably going to get caned by the "ladz" on this forum now!  Sorry LatN!).  I mean, the effects were cool (very) and the story was better than most of the rubbish that comes out of Hollywood.  But to be honest, it didn't move me that much, except the horrible bits to the wife and son.

Having said that, as the guys have said, the basic moral of adherence to honest principles even in the face of adversity and preparing for the afterlife are all things of which we could do with being reminded.

Salaam
