Salamu Aliakom ya Muslimeen

Well this is sort of an intro about myself and a comment about the awesome bebzi stand. Umm what to say? Hmm well I know a lot of you might already know me, definatly the admins know me hehe (it's good to know admins). So I am Egyptian living in California studying. So yeah thats about it. So at the bebzi stand you need to have this guy in a jalabiya and a red fez with a toothy smile and a bottle opener. Any of you who have been to Egypt will know what I mean :)

Ok, thats about it, salam

Princess, many of the moderators/admin people drink bebsi, one of them went to an iftar dinner and brought a six pack of pepsi because there was a fear that there might not be bebsi at the event. :)    But I guess there are harmful effects to bebsi, I heard that you could use it to remove the corrosion from your battery terminals in your car.  'Did you know that?  :)

Hiyam- do you mean have I taken bebsi to an iftar dinner? ???  I like bebsi but I would not do something like that, but someone on this board has done that, and I don't want to mention their name and embarass them. :)

I like this name "baboosa" it has a nice sound to it.  :)  These foods that Youssuf talked about I've never heard of before.  In the Arab bakeries that I have gone to out here they don't have things like that.  They just have baklava and mamoul cookies and some cakes (the ones with pistachios taste really good).

I've noticed that the Arab foods that I have tried usually don't have any spices or much taste to them like Indian/Pakistani food.  Are there Arab foods that have spices in them? ???

Glad u decided to join Madia ya Al-Basha :)

Now the food :) .Basboosa  to Egyptians is the same as Hareesa (or hareeseh) to Palestinians/Jordanians. Jannah is right, we do have toasted almonds on top (but I never had it with pineapple).  For those brave enough to give it a try,  the recipe is listed at
http://www.twdg.com/cooking/recipe/harissy.html. (the original recipe does not have cheese in it)

Assalam ualykum,

I just usually take gum and make sure I have lot of napkins with me when I go to an iftar dinner at the masjid. Just in case that if there are any foreign foods that I don't like, "I quietly spit it out in my napkin and throw it away. Drink lots of water and then chew some gum so that the taste goes away. No one notices it, I pretend like I am wiping my mouth. One time I tried this Arabic food that had me running out of there. It was a bunch of green leaves and i think there was something wrapped in there. That's about the only arabic food that I don't like.

I wonder who that person was that took the bebzi with them? I think that I might have an idea. :)

A reason for that is that our Arab foods are kind of expensive to make, and they take so much time...
well our most famous one is thareed which if you tasted you would not be asking about spice;)...Koskous is another one.
Basboosa tastes so good, but with out ANY pinaples on top. If you ever go to Saudi Arabia, you will know what I am talking about.
Mamoole sucks. It should not be sold in stores...If you want the recipe for basboosa I will give it to you;) insha'allah

Okay okay, my hand is up. I admit it, I too have done this in the past, though I can't remember the occasion. And, in my defence, it was a long time ago. You see Doctor, I used to be mental. But no more, I'm cured, gwzoop frintle thwock.

The only exception being that it wasn't bebsi. Why would anyone settle for some pale imitation when you can have The Real Thing? ;)

Though drinking too much is notoriously conducive to putting on weight.

Someone should invent a Bebsiorette badge.

I can provide the name of a really good BA (*) program if required. :) Especially if the addiction has reached the advanced stages of Even Warm Flat Bebsi Is Better Than Water phase. If so, I'm afraid it could be worse than everyone else around the suspect might imagine. I advise an immediate exclusion zone of 16 cans radius, and a quarantine. There's no other choice. S/he'll have to go Cold Bebsi.

Lol.

Abu Khaled- that is really embarassing, I also wonder what your hosts said when you arrived with a six pack of Coca Cola? :)

Saleema- those leaves with something inside it sound like stuffed grape leaves?  If I remember correctly those don't have any real taste to them.  I can't believe you actually throw the food out in a napkin.  What I do is I just get a little of everything and that way if I don't like it, then when I get seconds I pass up on that dish.

Hiyam- I guess there aren't any good Arab bakeries out here. :(  I heard there is a website where you can order Arab bakery stuff and get them delivered but they only had baklava and mamoul cookies.  If anyone knows some other websites that sell other Arabic stuff I'd like to try it out.  'Waraque Inaab' ???  I need to go lookup Thareed and find out what that food is.

Mona- I went to that website and found that there are some other recipes of Arab dishes there that I never heard of.

I heard that the workers in soft drink factories have to wear shoes with two inch heels. They get new ones every six months because the acid in the soft drinks that gets spilt on the ground disintegrates the heels. I dunno how accurate that is though.

Hiyam, is thareed also called treedeh? Is it like a mix of bread and zucchini?

Arshad, arabic food usually has plenty of spices in it. Your taste buds have probably been a bit dulled by Pakistani/Indian hot food. Mine are getting there. :)

And if you guys want to really try arabic food, check out some Lebanese or Syrian cook books at your library. Mediterranean food is delicious (and healthy because it's mostly made of vegetables).

2 hours for iftaar. Thank you Allah.

Salamu Aliakom,

Well I didn't think this thread would get this large heh masha Allah.

Saleema, what you didn't like is called mahshi waraq 3ainab. It is a very well known Egyptian delicacy, you take cooked rice/meat and stuff it in grape leaves. Rest assure I too do not like it, which is why a lot of people think I am not Egyptian.

Bhaloo, you should come visit me and I will make a couple of trays of basboosa especially for you heheh :)

Bro Hiyam, yes you can have baboosa with toppings it depends on the person who is making it. I have usually seen basoosa with an almond in the middle of it.

As far as the love of bebzi, well it's just bebzi I mean you just like it. I never take any food with me to an iftar at the masjid, because I can't sneak any in hehe ;) And I think the whole purpose wa Allahu A3laam is just to eat what is there and be with your brothers/sisters in Islam.

Actually, it could quite possibly be true.  Phosphoric acid is partly responsible for the cola taste in colas.  You'll notice that they don't put it in 7-Up, Sprite, etc (they use citric acid instead for the citrus-type lemon taste).

But anyway, Bebzi is quite acidic (pH ~ 2), so I reckon working in a plant would probably eat your shoes after a while, and Bebzi can probably slowly clean corrosion off of coins and battery terminals, though I've never tried it myself.

Rest easy, though, Bebzi drinkers.  It's somewhat acidic, but it's not nearly as acidic as stomach acid, I'm thinking.  Still, you're probably better off drinking water.

Shahid.

Qishtaa (or ishtaa) is thick cream very similar to English cream that is used as spread on scones, if not the same.  Your grocery store should have some in the milk section.  They come in little jars.  Arabic food stores should have them in little cans.

Burffy...that doesn't even sound inviting ;)
