The Prayer, The Prayer

One must be mindful of Allah, the Most High, in the Prayer in order for the prayer to be perfected. We must place the world behind our backs. Indeed how would it be if the person knew that his words were being listened to, and that they were definitely going to reach the ruler, then what would he say? How would he speak? Do you not think that he would carefully consider each word and each letter that he utters? Then how about the one who stands before the All-Hearing, All-Seeing and All-Knowing, the One from Whom nothing is hidden?

Allah’s Messenger (S) said, "Remember death in your prayers because if a person remembers death in his prayer he will be likely to pray well. Pray the prayer of a man who does not think he will pray another prayer besides it."

Also, "Pray the prayer of one who is bidding farewell, as if you were seeing Him (Allah). For even though you do not see Him, He certainly sees you."

"Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their prayers with humility and attentiveness (khushoo’)." (23:1-2)

The Prophet (S) used to pray and the sound of weeping, like the sound of a pot when boiling would be heard emanating from his chest out of his awe and veneration of Allah, the One free and far removed of all defects.

Abdullah ibn ash-Shikhakheer (R) said, “I saw Allah’s Messenger (S) leading us in prayer and a sound like the boiling of a pot could be heard emanating from his chest due to weeping.”

The weeping of Umar (R) was such that it could be heard by those in the last row, as occurs in al-Bukharee. This is what is reported by Abdullah ibn Shaddad who said, “I heard the weeping of Umar and I was in the last of the rows and he was reciting:

..I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah.. (12:86)

As for Abu Bakr, (R), the people were unable to hear his recitation in prayer due to his weeping as Aisha (R) reported:

In his (final) illness, the Messenger of Allah (S) said: "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." So Aisha said: “When Abu Bakr stands in your place the people are unable to hear him due to his weeping so order Umar to lead the people in prayer.” Again he (S) said, "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aisha said to Hafsah: “Say to him that if Abu Bakr stands in your place then the people will not be able to hear him due to his weeping, so order Umar to lead the people in prayer.” So Hafsah did so and Allah’s Messenger (S) said, " Desist. Indeed, you are (like) the companions of Yusuf. Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Hafsah said to Aisha: “I never attained good from you.”

And in another narration she said: “Abu Bakr is a soft-hearted man and would not be able to lead the people in Prayer standing in your place.”

I found two very beneficial articles regarding khushoo' (humility) in prayer. There is alot of info on there, buti'm sure that even if we concentrate on a few aspects of the prayer at a time then we will find an increase in our quality of prayer to Allah aza wa jall.
