AL-TAWHID COLLEGE

We are pleased to announce the launch of Al-Tawhid College from Shawwal 1421 (January 2001), if Allah wills.  The college will provide courses in traditional Islamic sciences, with emphasis on their contemporary relevance and practical application.  

All classes will be held at Masjid al-Tawhid, 80 High Road, Leyton, London E15 (nearest tube: Leyton, Central Line; bus routes 69 & 97).  

The courses are free of charge, although donations towards costs are welcome. The classes will be open to all brothers and sisters, but students are asked to register beforehand (by email or post) in order to guarantee a place.  

Attendance registers will be kept, and
there may be examinations during some courses.  There is no age restriction on students.  Limited overnight accommodation is available at weekends for students travelling from outside London.

COURSE DETAILS  (Hajj Term:  20 weeks, Shawwal 1421-Safar 1422 / January-May 2001)

A. ‘Ulum al-Qur’an (Sciences of the Qur’an) by Sh. Suhaib Hasan:

Fridays, 6.45pm (from 5/1/2001).  The Book of Allah is ultimately the source of all real knowledge.  This course will be based on al-Itqan by Imam al-Suyuti.

B. Compilation of the Sunnah, by Abu Tahir:  Saturdays 3pm (from 10/3/2001, NB this course will start after ‘Eid al-Adha).  

Covers:  the authority of the Sunnah; transmission and recording of the Sunnah from the
time of the Prophet (sAws) onwards; features of the major compilations of Hadith.

C. Qur’anic Arabic, by Usama Hasan: Saturdays 5pm/after Salat al-Maghrib (from 6/1/2001).

Learning the oldest living language, that of the Book of Allah, is the key to the treasures of the Islamic sciences.  This course covers Nahw (Grammar) and Sarf (Morphology), using the al-Nahw al-Wadih and Ajrumiyyah texts, with constant reference to Qur’anic passages.

D. Tafsir al-Qur’an  (Commentary on the Qur’an):  Saturdays 6.30pm (from 6/1/2001).  

Shaykh Suhaib Hasan’s tafsir of al-Qur’an, which began several years ago in Turnpike Lane masjid and later moved to Masjid al-Tawhid, will continue with the tafsir of Surat al-Anbiya’ onwards.  The tafsir is based on the classic works of Ibn Kathir, al-Qurtubi, al-Shanqiti (one of the Shaykh’s direct teachers) and others.

E. Sharh Sahih Muslim (Commentary on Sahih Muslim) by Sh. Suhaib Hasan:  Sundays, after Salat al-Zuhr (from 7/1/2001).  

This will continue with Kitab al-Hajj, followed by Kitab al-Zakat, etc.  The commentary is based on those of Imam al-Nawawi and Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin.

F. Fiqh (Islamic Law) by Abu ‘Aliyah:  Sundays, 6.30pm (from 7/1/2001).  

Covers the Fiqh of: Purification, Prayer, Zakat, Fasting, Hajj, Jihad; Transactions, Usury, Leasing and Renting, Endowments (Awqaf), Wills
and Inheritance; Marriage, Divorce and Women’s Issues.

G. Islamic Economics and Finance, by Shaharuddin Zainuddin and Tarek Diwany:  Mondays, 6.45pm (from 8/1/2001).  

Covers:  Maqasid al-Shari’a (Objectives of the Sacred Law); riba and gharar; the banking
system and alternatives - Barter, LETTS currency, the Gold Dinar; Insurance, Takaful; Law of Contract; Partnership - Musharaka, Mudaraba (Qirad); Ijara (Leasing); Murabaha; others - ‘inah, dayn, istisna’ etc.

H. Sirah (Life of the Prophet sAws), by ‘Abdur-Rahman Shayyal:  Tuesdays, 6.45pm (from 9/1/2001).  

Lineage.  Geographical and historical setting of Makkan society.  Upbringing and early life.  Revelation. Private and public phases of the call. Isra’ and Mi’raj.  Hijrah.  Battles of Badr, Uhud, etc.  Hudaybiyyah.  Conquest of Makkah and the rest of Arabia.  The Farewell Hajj.  Physical description.  His death and
legacy, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

I. Basic Arabic by Muhammad ‘Adil:  Thursdays, 6.45pm (from 11/1/2001).  

This will be based on the Madinah University course for non-Arabic speakers, and will serve as a foundation or complement for the  Qur’anic Arabic course.  All students must be able to read fully-vowelled Arabic text (e.g. al-Qur’an).

J. Tajwid (Art of Reciting the Qur’an).  

Details:  to be confirmed.  Tajwid is an important Islamic art, and the soul-inspiring alternative to haram music.  The course will follow the Tuhfat al-Atfal and Jazariyyah texts.
