Ayah 1

{Tabaarak allathee bi-yadihil mulku wa huwwa 'ala kulli shay-in qadeer}

{Tabaarak allathee bi-yadihil mulku} that is,high praise and glory is paid to Allah, subhaanahu wa ta'ala, Who grants or bestows on His creations from every aspect of goodness, Who carries out the Sovereignty throughout the heavens and the earth, and Who interacts between them as He wills.

Ibn 'Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with them, defined it as He honours whom He wills and humbles whom He wills, and brings to life and causes to die, makes (one) wealthy or makes (one) poor, giving and withholding.  [Tafseer al-Qurtubee, 18/206]

{wa huwwa 'ala kulli shay-in qadeer} that is, He is the Qaadir, the One Who is Powerful over all things. He has absolute power and complete ability in all affairs without denial and withou having to be defended.

Ayah 2

{allathee khalaqa al-mawta wal-hayaata li-yab-luwakum ayyu-kum ahsanu 'amala wa huwwal-`azeezul-Ghafoor}

The meaning of some words or phrases:

khalaqa:  having the ability to create -- to create, to produce, to cause the presence of something

li-yabaluwakum:  what is meant here, to test you in your actions, like a test of deeds and indeed, Allah knows everything

ay-yukum ahsanu 'amala:  which one is most obedient to Allah and sincere, best in action

al-'Azeez:  "Al Ghalib" - the One Who overcomes -- Who is not prevented from punishing whom He chooses.  It is "tarheeb" a warning or intimidation to whoever commits sins

al-Ghafoor:  possessing the great quality of forgiveness and covering up the sins of the one who repents and does good deeds. It is "targheeb" a type of encouragement to the one who stumbles and falls, so as not to give up hope.

{Allathee khalaqal-mawta wal-hayaata} that is, He caused the presence of life and death in this world.  So He gives life to whomever He wills, and He is the One, the Subduer, the Almighty.

The Scholars of tafseer (Qur'aanic exegesis) explain: death is not the end or complete finality of life.  It is only a passing from one abode to another -- that is, why it is established in authentic hadith that the dead person hears, sees and feels and he is in the grave.  Just as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: ". . .Verily one of you, if placed in his grave and his friends remain for a while, he hears their footsteps as they walk away. . ."
[part of a hadith reported by al-Bukhaari and Muslim]. So we see that death is only the cutting off of the binds between the soul and the body and the separation of the two.

{li-yaba-luwakum ayi-yukum ahsanu 'amala} that is, in order to test you, examine you, a trial for you.  So the whole purpose of this wordly existence is a test. Also, the world "ikhtibaar", which is used to explain "li-yabaluwakum" means to be on probation. It is like saying, O people, you are on trial or on probation to see those who do good from those who commit sins and who are the wrongdoers.

Al-Qurtubee said:  "In other words, He is testing you or making you go through a test, for verily Allah knows the obedient from the sinner for all
time" [al-Qurtubee 18/206]

{Wa huwwal-`Azeezul-Ghafoor} that is He [Allah] is al-`Azeez -  al-Ghaalib - Dominant, All-Powerful and ready to punish those who disobey Him - and al-Ghafoor: extremely forgiving of the sins of whoever repents and turns towards Him.

Allah, subhaanahu wa ta'ala, often describes Himself with these two qualities together  (al-`Azeez and al-Ghafoor) intentionally; While He warns us on the one hand, of His Might and Power and Ability to bring those who transgress His limits to justice and that His punishment awaits such a person, on the other hand, He also reminds us that He is forgiving and merciful if we sincerely repent with the intention not to repeat our erroneous deeds.

Ayah 3

{Allathee khalaqa saba'a  samawaatin tibaqa, Ma tara fi khalqir-Rahmaani min tafawut; Farji'il basara, hal tara min futoor?}

Allah, subhaanahu wa ta'ala, in continuing the same purpose or intent of the preceeding ayah, gives additional evidence of His Power which is not subject to limits, bounds or restrictions.

{Allathee khalaqa saba'a  samawaatin tibaqa}

In other words, He created the seven heavens layered one on top of another -- each sky is like a ceiling for the others.  He brought them into existence and they are without pillars or means of support; they are not linked by any connection other than the system of gravity that He has created which points to or indicates something of His complete and total Power.  Just as it says in another ayah:

{Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars or support that you see} [Suratur Ra'ad:2]

{Ma tara fi khalqir-Rahmaani min tafawut..}

That is as if to say, " O Listener, you don't see, in the creation of Ar-Rahmaan, The Creator, anything missing or unbalanced, or in conflict, rather, there is the utmost order and perfection. Here He, subhaana hu wa ta'ala, is calling attention to His extraordinary Power.

{Farji'il basara, hal tara min futoor.}

That is, look again, have another look to be certain and to firmly establish this proof within yourself.  If you are in doubt of it, a careful study and consideration of the creation of the heavens -- not just one heaven, not just one sky -- the sky that we see with the naked eye -- no, seven skies, seven heavens!  If the disbelievers would just contemplate the creation of the heavens layer upon layer and all that is in them of the creations, without faults, imperfections or any defects, there would be no doubt about the Power and Dominion of the One Who has the ability to accomplish this act.

Just a minor consideration: the earth , spinning on its axis, is  xxx? degrees away from the sun. Scientists have told us that if it was just a few degrees, for example, closer to the sun, it wold be too hot to support life; and, similarly , if it was a few degrees farther away from it, this planet would be too cold to support  life, as well. Subhaanallah wa bi hamdih that we have been  guided to Islam -- we  know the creation of what man calls THE UNIVERSE (as if there was only one) was no accident - it shows us the complete perfection of Our Lord, who has sovereignty over  all things.
