Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Does anybody know the Tafseer for the verses 15-20 of Surah Al-Baqara?  I do not understand the similes being used.

Wassalam-u-Alaikum

Allah knows best, but my undestanding is that these ayats refer to the fact that when the deen is easy (like having to do salat or pay zakat), then the hypocrites are able to do these things.  But when the deen becomes harder e.g. when Jihad needs to be done, the hypocrites turn away.

[2.15] Allah shall pay them back their mockery, and He leaves them alone in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on.

[2.16] These are they who buy error for the right direction, so their bargain shall bring no gain, nor are they the followers of the right direction.

[2.17] Their parable is like the parable of one who kindled a fire but when it had illumined all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them in utter darkness-- they do  not see.

[2.18] Deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they will not turn back.

[2.19] Or like abundant rain from the cloud in which is utter darkness and thunder and lightning; they put their fingers into their ears because of the thunder peal, for fear of death, and Allah encompasses the unbelievers.

[2.20] The lightning almost takes away their sight; whenever it shines on them they walk in it, and when it becomes dark to them they stand still; and if Allah  had pleased He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight; surely Allah has power over all things.

These are the verses you were asking about. I'll try to tell you what my Quran teacher taught me.

Allah points towards the Munafiqs. They used to remain with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) but make fun of Islam and the Muslims when they were alone. Allah says that it is actually Allah who is making fun of them, but they are not aware of it. They are the most unfortunate people who remain with the Holy Prophet but still gain nothing except error and ignorance. They are deaf, dumb and blind because they cannot recognize the truth.

Then there is an example. Allah says "one who kindled a fire ". This is our Holy Prophet who kindled the fire and the fire is Islam. Before Islam there was no spiritual light, the world was in darkness. Now this light (of Islam) enlightens the surroundings, but there are people who are in the light, they listen to what Allah says and what Prophet (PBUH) says but don't obey them. This is because their innerself is in darkness. They are not able to benefit from the light.

The second example is of rain. Rain is beneficial, but it may also bring with it some hardships. In the similar way remaining with Muslims and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is beneficial for the munafiqs but they don't want to suffer any hardships. For example they don't want to take part in Jihad but they want maal-e-ghaneemat. They are not ready to spend their money for the sake of Allah. Allah says this is not acceptable.

This is what I was able to understand from the above verses. I seek forgiveness from Allah Ta'ala if I have committed any mistake. Actually my expression in English is also not very strong.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

The explanation for these ayaat from Tafsir Ibn Kathir is like 12 pages long...

Here's part of it:

"Allah likened the hypocrites when they bought deviation with guidance, thus acquiring blindness, to the example of a person who started a fire.  When the fire was lit, and illuminated the surrounding area, the person benefited from it and felt safe.  Then the fire was suddenly extinguished.  Therefore, total darkness covered the person, and he became unable to see anything or find his way out of it.  Further, this person could not hear or speak and became so blind that even if there were light, he would not be able to see.  This is why he cannot return to the state that he was in before this happened to him.  Such is the case with the hypocrites who preferred misguidance over guidance, deviation over righteousness.  This parable indicates that the hypocrites first believed, then disbelieved, just as Allah states in other parts of the Quran.

"Allah removed their light" (dhahabAllahu bee nooreehim) means Allah removed what benefits them...
"And left them in darkness" (watarakahum fee dhulumaat) that is their doubts, disbelief and hypocricy.

"So they could not see" (la yubsiroon) meaning they are unable to find the correct path or find it's direction.  In addition they are

"Deaf" (sumum) and thus cannot hear guidance
"Dumb" (bukmun) and  cannot utter the words that might benefit them
"and blind" ('umun) in total darkness and deviation.
...
(ayah 19 and 20) This is another parable which Allah gave about the hypocrites who sometimes know the truth and doubt it at other times.  When they suffer from doubt, confusion, and disbelief, their hearts are

"Like a sayyib" (kasayyibin) meaning 'the rain', as Ibn Mas'oud, Ibn 'Abbas, and several other companions confirmed as well as .... the most common opinion is that it means the rain that comes down during

"darkness" (dhulumaatun) meaning doubts, disbelief and hypocricy.

"Thunder" (wara'adun) that shocks the hearts with fear.  The hypocrites are usually full of anxiety, just as Allah described them ...

"The lightning" (al-barrqu) is in reference to the light of faith that is sometimes felt in the hearts of the hypocrites,

"They thruts their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death.  But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers." meaning, their cautiousness does not benefit them because they are bound by Allah's all encompassing will and decision.

... inshaAllah I can type up more if wanted ?

Assalamu alaikum,

Uzer, you're asking us???  You're in a land where you can get a plethora of Islamic books (including tafaasir) for dirt cheap from Urdu Bazaar (or other, smaller bookstores) or even check out stuff from libraries.

Get yourself a copy of Tafheem-ul-Quran or Fee-Dhilal-al-Quraan in Urdu.  Heck, even Ibn Kathir  (the whole thing) is available everywhere in Urdu.

Wassalamu alaikum,

Arsalan

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Jazzak-Allahu Khairan everybody.  I appreciate the amount of time it must have taken to type all that.  Thank you very much... Al-Hamdulillah I understand now.

Bro. Arsalan, Jazzak-Allahu Khair for the names of the books, but unfortunately my ability to read urdu is not good enough to be able to read literature with much command.

Wassalam-u-Alaikum
