URGENT ALERT MUSLIM BOYCOTT OF M&S
7 December 2000 On Saturday, the Muslim community in Britain is expanding the campaign to
boycott Marks & Spencers (M&S). Seven major M&S department stores around
the country are to be simultaneously picketed on Saturday by Muslim
activists led by Action Alert, calling for the boycott of the firm due to
its links with Zionism. The Islamic Human Rights Commission is supporting
and co-operating with grassroots activists around the UK.. Leaflets and
posters will be on hand to inform customers of the firm's unashamed
support of the occupying Zionist regime that continues to commit
atrocities against Palestinian children, women and men. M&S is one of the most prominent UK companies which openly supports the
Zionist State of Israel. Barry Kosmin of the Institute for Jewish Policy
notes that "M&S was prominent, even essential, to Anglo-Jewry from the
1960s through to the 1980s. partly because of its strong historical links
with Zionism; and partly for its success in getting Israeli goods to the
British marketplace." (Lawrence Joffe, 'The End of a Jewish Saint',
Jerusalem Report, 5 June 2000) According to Simon Round in the Jewish Chronicle, M&S is "a company which
does have links with Israel" (Jewish Chronicle, 17 November 2000).
Lawrence Joffe comments that, "M&S continues its 'special relationship'
with Israel at the shop floor level." The store, "still relies heavily on
Israeli manufacturers". This has meant that millions of pounds have been
sent to Israel by M&S. Indeed, according to Richard Sheldon, head of M&S
operations in Israel, the firm's purchases from Israel amounted to $233
million last year (Jerusalem Report, 5 June 2000). Israel so much appreciates this commercial support from M&S, that the
company was included in a list of 'award-winning' Zionist businesses. The
Jewish Chronicle reported that the Israeli Ambassador in London, Dror
Zeigerman, honoured 15 companies near the end of November, for their
unwavering support of Israel via commerce. M&S was among these British
businesses accordingly honoured in a ceremony held in London by the
British-Israeli Chamber of Commerce (Jewish Chronicle, 24 November 2000). The Islamic Human Rights Commission is calling on Muslims in the UK to
support Action Alert's boycott by attending the vigils at the following
M&S stores, on Saturday (date), at the times included:   a.. M&S, Ilford High Road, 11AM-4PM
 b.. M&S, East Ham High Road, 11AM-4PM
 c.. M&S, Oxford Street (Marble Arch), 11AM-4PM
 d.. M&S, Edgware Road, 11AM-4PM
 e.. M&S, Kensington High Street, 11AM-4PM
 f.. M&S, St. Albans, 11AM-4PM
g.. M&S, Manchester Town Centre 11AM-4PM There may also be other areas where M&S is being picketed, organised by
other brothers and sisters. You may be interested in organising one in
your area. For more information please phone Action Alert on 07957 20 20 90. [END]

                brothers and sisters

                sorry for this late info

inshallah there will be propests outside marks & S  (inshallah no
                shouting and screaming):)

as some of you have heard mark & S  fund isreal(the army included)
they(if i remember correctly) send 233 million (currency) to isreal
each year. And it only makes sense that muslims should not contribute to
this as this leads to the butcherings of many muslims in palestine.
so inshallah if you can come down to any of the mark & S stores-(
                ilford,marbleArch,oxford street,and i think some where in
manchester???)inshallah this should start 11.00am and go on the whole day.

and inshallah make the muslims aware of where thier money is being sent
cos alot of them dont know. alhamdullilah the protest last saturday (i
think) really did help the brothers and sister who took part in this
managed to turn a way alot of people including christains who believe
what they were doing was right. unfortunately the brothers and sisters did
face quite a lot of abuse(phisical and verbal)
(but thier reward is with Allah)

May Allah put in our hearts the desire to help our brothers and sisters
in need in anyway we can, ameen. and may He make easy for us our help
                to them.

                Salam Alaikum

Anti-Israel demo pickets M&S

By Chris Bunting

10 December 2000

Marks And Spencer has denied close links with the Israeli authorities after Muslim and anti-Israel groups staged demonstrations outside its stores yesterday and called for a boycott of the chain by British consumers.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission, which has 2,300 members in the UK, and Action Alert, a small group of anti-Israel campaigners set up only two months ago, are calling for shoppers to shun the store because of what they believe are its close links with Israel.

A group of 15 protesters gathered outside the flagship Marks and Spencer's store in Oxford Street yesterday, accusing the store of supporting Israeli killings of children in the occupied territories. Peaceful protests were also planned for four other London stores and in Manchester and St Albans.

Massoud Shadjareh, chairman of Islamic Human Rights Commission, said: "Marks and Spencer have made it quite clear that they are supporting Israel, both historically and currently. We believe they are supporting a system that justifies killing children and that this is morally wrong."

He said reports in the Israeli press indicated that the store bought $233m (£166m) of goods from the country annually. "That is significant support and it is really British consumers who are paying for that support," he said.

Jane Lowe, a Marks and Spencer spokeswoman, said: "We are not supporting any country. We do not support Israel. We just support good clothes." She said the company bought half a billion pounds worth of clothes from the Middle East every year; its Israeli trade was only a fraction of that total. "Historically we have had links with Israel but they have been much more on a personal basis. The people that founded us were Jewish," she said.
