BSM Salaam Alaikum to all: Allow me to intro myself: I am a new madini from (insert name of state that is the butt of election jokes here), however I was born in (insert South American country with communist-leaning president here). I am a senior in college (finally-alhamdulilah) and this is my fourth Ramadan. What else? hmmmm...I'm addicted to reading and writing (that's how I came to Islam) and starting on my first book (topic: the quest for knowledge). As you can see I'm quite the nerd ;) Insha Allah you all will accept me as a Madini, even though i like to get sarcastic and crack jokes often. Si hay otros musulmanes latinos aqui por favor avisenme, Gracias. (If there are any Latino Muslims here please advise me, Thanks). Ramadan Mubarak to all |

Assalam ualykum Welcome! So you are a Cuban American from the state of Florida. Nice to have you join us. I think you are our first latino Muslim on here, (but I may be wrong), but we have many converts on here. :) I like to write and read too. That's how I came to know the religion I was born into. :) wassalam |

slm
Hey, I didn't understand a word that u wrote. Since u said something about me, I want to know what you wrote about me. translate pls. :)
This part where I said: Es verdad que Se7en y Saleema escriben muchas cosas muy buenas. That means: Its true that Se7en and Saleema write well. :) Saleema I would have thought you would have known some Spanish words as I always thought Texas may have had some Spanish influence in the language as you guys border Mexico just like us Californians. Usually people out here pick up a few words and phrases. |

BSM No no, I'm not Cuban, go further south, to Venezuela...I might've mislead with the communist thing, it's that the Venezuelan president is a pseudo-communist ):( Bhaloo: si me gusta la Pepsi...la vida en Vzla es muy caotica, mucha violencia y crimen, pero es un pais muy lindo, lastima que haya sido arrinuado por politicos corruptos. (Let me know what you can't make out and i'll translate) Insha Allah i'll post some lit. soon salaam to all |

Assalam ualykum Thank you brother Arsahd for that nice comment about my writing, but how would you know I write well???? eh? Venezuelan President is da man! Hey as far i am concerned, if he calls the Palestinians his "brethren" then I like him. Even though Clinton is a democratically elected President, I don't like him, cuz he didn't call the Palestinians his "brethren" like your President did. So I like him, and I hate Clinton. (I already hate Bush too but I will hate him less than Clinton.) So why do you think that he called the Palestinians his "brethren?" That was one of the best interviews that I read. :) He seems like a very smart guy, (hmmmmm... reminds me of Suddam Hussain), he gives very curt answers. He has a "pimpish" attitude, you know what I mean? I bet he walks with a strut... Did you read his interview in the Times magazine? What did you think about it? :) wassalam |

slm Rashid I understood everything except for arrinuado . 'Does that mean ruled or governed? ??? I'll speak in English now so others can understand. :) I've heard its not safe in general in South American countries. How is the Muslim population out in Venezuela? Are there a lot of people converting to Islam there? How is Ramadan going for you? You'll have to share with us your favorite kinds of foods out there with us and the recipes. ;) Maybe you know how to make enchilladas, there is a topic discussing that in the Bebzi Stand, but so far no one has given a recipe.
Thank you brother Arsahd for that nice comment about my writing, but how would you know I write well???? eh?
Saleema I was referring to the discussions you, Kashif and Arsalan have on the board about the political situation in the world. They are pretty interesting (even though I don't really participate in them) and informative and I usually come out of there learning something as I am ignorant of many of the things happening in the world. I sort of think of you guys as our McLauchlin Group (that's the show where they take 4 political experts and they discuss something in the world, right?). I don't even know what's really going on in Venezuela is or who the president is. |

bsm salaam to all: First i'd like to wish everyone a Ramadan Mubarak and thank you all for welcoming me to the board. The Venezuelan president is Hugo Chavez. I did read the interview in Time and although i give him credit and respect for supporting the Palestinian cause, he has not really done anything to improve the situation of the country. He loves giving 4 hour speeches about "the revolution" and "new economic order" yet, approximately 70 % of Venezuelans live in poverty, unemployment is rampant, you can't walk outside at night without fearing for your life. To me he is just talking a lot of communist rhetoric, but no action. We all know communism is an atheistic philosophy, where the state becomes God. As for Islam alhamdulilah it is growing. Visit mezquitaibrahim This is the masjid in my hometown of Caracas. Most of the muslims are arabs and their descendants. Since venezuela is a member of OPEC, there were a lot of exchanges and so you'll find plenty of kuwaitis, saudis, as well as lebanese, palestinians, syrians, etc. There was a big incident last summer when Chavez went to visit Saddam Hussein and the USA gov't. being that they love to get in other people's business expressed their disapproval. Chavez told them to get lost and of couse his popularity skyrocketed. He went to all the OPEC member countries inviting them to the summit in Caracas and all the heads of state showed up except for Hussein and Qaddafi. Arshad: arruinado means ruined. We don't make enchiladas, but i'll share some typical venezuelan recipes on that thread. Salaam |

Masha' Allah, Rashid, bienvenido a la ciudad de Madina! Es dificil escribir in espanol aqui por razon de la falta de acentos gramaticos! As you can tell. So, let's speak English from now on. Hmm, I don't know whether it is the same in Venezuela but in Spain the word "arruinado" has a special connotation of "bankrupt", which kind of makes what you were saying all the more poignant. Mind you, there are enough brothers and sisters here who are from (or are descendants of people from) the Indian sub-continent. So they'll be able to empathise with you about countries "arruinados" by corrupt politicians. Anyway, welcome to Madina. May Allah make your stay here a beneficial one for us all. Salaam |

Salaam 'Alaikum Rashid: Me llama Umm Zaid, pero soy la madre de Noelle (Noelas en Espanol) tambien. My hija es dominicana y boricua, y vivimos en ciudad con un big population latino. Yo soy one of the founders de LADO: Latino Muslim Dawa Organization, con my amiga, una Muslima boricua. Hay un masjid aqui, en el Bronx, que se llama La Alianza Islamica, y el masjid es founded by Puerto Rican brothers from El Barrio. As you can see, I speak Spanglish. It's been a long time since I watched Univision or listened to La Mega, y nadie aqui en la communidad musulman habla espanol. |

slm Umm Zaid: Yes i did read an article about the alianza islamica, as a matter of fact i just posted a link to it on another thread to a sister that was asking about latino Muslims in NYC. Maybe you can help her out insha Allah. Also, please post some more info about LADO, I've seen it mentioned on the net before. Ha ha i don't watch Univision too much, only the news, cuz they're with their novelas on all day... Ramadan Mubarak |

Nouha: The community in Bronx is mixed. There isn't a 'community feeling,' if u know what I mean. There are lots of Guyanese Muslims, West Africans, Sub-Continentals, Kosovars and other Balkan Muslims, the PRs at Alianza, Yemenis and Jordanians and Palestinians. As for the Black Americans, I guess they don't go to the masajid here. Most of the folks I know go to either Brooklyn or 96th st. There is one Islamic book and clothing store, and a few halal groceries. Everyone has their 'own' masjid, if'n you know what I mean. I liked the community feeling in NJ much better. Alianza Islamica: They are currently located on Alexander Ave b/t 139th and 140th, in the Mott Haven section of the S. Bronx. I'm sorry, I don't have their ph # on me right now. They bought a brownstone in a 'historic renovation' neighborhood, where there is a police station, a library, some place run by Nuns for either homeless or AIDS patients, and some residences. The Nuns were allowed to put out big banners proclaiming what their joint was, but Alianza is only permitted to put out a small 8" x 11" or so sign at the times when they are there, or a small sign in the window. Puh-leeze. LADO: Dunno wassup w/ them right now, but the sister and I will see each other this weekend. I remember somewhere in the haze of my last trimester hearing something about them having their own website or something. |

he has not really done anything to improve the situation of the country. He loves giving 4 hour speeches about "the revolution" and "new economic order" yet, approximately 70 % of Venezuelans live in poverty, I'm sorry, that's really sad. :( Most of the Asian countries are like that too. So all talk and no action huh? I knew his image would be shattered some day in my eyes. Chavez told them to get lost and of couse his popularity skyrocketed. Yup, it sure skyrocketed with me. I would talk about him *all* the time. Wouldn't it be nice to have some real leadership in our respective regimes for once? I know that he clamped down on some journalists some time back, after that I didn't hear anything on that. How is the freedom of press under him? The harder he clamps down on the press, it will show how ruthless he is and where do his priorities stand. The less lenient he is with the press, that means the better he will be for his people. wassalam |

slm As for press, it's gotten more open in criticism. Most of the major papers were in hot water a few months back because he feels they were nitpicking every little thing he was doing. A few offices were closed down, then they reopened. So now he pretty much leaves them alone, cuz the majority of people back him. Of course the rich elites are his sworn enemies. Myself i'll remain non-committed until i see results, but I agree with his policy against USA domination (US planes are forbidden to enter Venezuelan airspace to conduct drug overflights, no US soldiers will be stationed there, etc). Something Saudi Arabia should think about, in my opinion. |

Salaam bro hope you post often! good latin muslim site is http://www.latinmuslims.com Just because he's banned some of the papers dosn't mean he's bad..remember how allende was finished off in chile? incidentally there are loads of muslims in latin america. did you know that some muslims escaped from slavery and set up a islamic state in the jungles of brazil in the 1800's? not something you'll find in most history books |
