Pakistan's ousted prime minister arrives in Saudi Arabia

By Adnan Malik

10 December 2000

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived for exile in Saudi Arabia today, more than a year after the army toppled his administration in a coup, Saudi sources and airport officials said.

Sharif arrived in the western port city of Jiddah on a royal Saudi plane in the early afternoon amid a tight media blackout and was whisked off to the holy city of Mecca along with his family for a pilgrimage, the sources said.

After the pilgrimage, Sharif and his family were to fly to the Saudi capital Riyadh, where the deposed prime minister was to undergo a medical checkup at a military hospital, said a Saudi source speaking on condition of anonymity.

Airport officials said the security surrounding Sharif's arrival in the kingdom was nearly unprecedented.

Officials in Saudi Arabia were not available for comment.

The former prime minister was freed by Pakistan's military government earlier Sunday after a member of the Saudi royal family brokered his release and exile to the kingdom, officials from Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League said.

In a surprise government announcement, Sharif's sentence was commuted and he was ordered into exile.

Sharif left the country with his elderly parents, his three children and their families, as well as his brother Shahbaz, a former chief minister of Pakistan's powerful Punjab province, his wife and daughter.

Also allowed to leave was Sharif's younger brother Abbas and his two sons. Both Abbas and Shahbaz, who had been in jail on corruption charges, were released, said Mariam Sharif, the deposed prime minister's daughter.

As custodians of Islam's holiest shrines, the Saudis have a tradition of opening their doors for fellow Muslims seeking refuge.

He should have met the same fate as Bhutto.  Too bad Musharraf is faaar from being another Ziaul Haque.

Wassalamu alaikum.

As Salamu Alaikum Wahrahmahthullah,

I watched a series of news reports about the exile of Nawaz Sharif.

Why was his life imprisonment sentence overturned?  Why do the arabs sympathise
with Nawaz Sharif?  Would they treat a Saudi resident with similar crimes with such kindness?  (More like they would have him hung drawn and quartered?)  Is a rich man's well-being worth more to the arabs than our suffering muslim brothers/sisters in Palestiine?  I don't see
the arabs making a very bold attempt to salvage what little is left of the lives of the palestinians?

Helping Nawaz Sharif to dramatically escape from imprisonment just shows that Saudi Arabia can do whatever they want.  However there has to be a will before you find a way.  Nawaz Sharif's cell mate said that he wanted the same treatment too!!! (Yeah right!!)

Apparently Bhutto was given the option of being exiled instead of the death penalty.  However he refused to go in to exile.  I guess he thought that being hung would be better than a life of shame.  He must have been a brave person to have made such a difficult decision.

Assalam ualykum,

Sharif should have gotten life imprisonment and Ba Nazir bhutto should have gotten the death penalty along with her husband Zardari.

The only good news is that Sharif can't hope to come back and run for office. Lol. When the rumors spread that he might get exiled in Pakistan, his wife said that the Punjabis would raise hell. hehe. They didn't even raise an eyebrow. Could this be a sign that the Muslims are setting aside nationalism and tribalism? Or is this an exception? It's high time that we stopped identifying ourselves by our ethnicities and nationalities.

I don't know if this was such a good move for the Musharif government to make. They should have made a deal on his life: We kill you unless you bring the money that you took from Pakistan and then we will only imprison you. Same with Ba Nazir Bhuto, and the MQM leader Iltaf Hussain. The assets and money that the Musharif government confiscated from the Sharif family is not even a 1/10 of the wealth that they stole from Pakistan. No wonder that they were so happy with being exiled, they have all the money they want in banks over sees and those governments refuse, (US, Great Britain are the main ones), to turn over the money in the bank accounts to Pakistan.

Iltaf Hussain and Ba Nazzir are asking for the same treatment that they granted to Sharif. They should not be given that. They should be brought to trail on treachery, threat to Pakistan's nation security, assassinations and murders and theft. Iltaf is responsible for many murders, there's not one house in Karachi that hasn't been affected by the MQM. So many young men have died under the false ideologies put in their heads by the MQM.

Iltaf Hussain's male family members should be taken in custody and held until he pays back the wealth that he stole from Pakistan, and the same should be done with Ba Nazir Bhuto.

It was a case of so and so heard this from someone and told me.  I guess we should not rely on hearsay.....

Yes the death penalty would be quite a justified punishment for those in question.

If Islamic law was implemented in Pakistan then they would refer to the Quran and realise that Allah (Subhanahu Wa ta'ala) said let not pity with hold you from carrying out the punishment prescribed.  I am thinking of surah nur where there is a reference to adulterers being given a hundred lashings each.

Assalam ualykum,

Ba Nazzir Bhutto, Zardari, Iltaf Hussain--they deserve the death penalties. Sharif doesn't. He deserves life imprisonment, and to get his left hand cut off for stealing money from the Pakistani people.

wassalam
