Israel Caught in Oil Squeeze Play

The Saudis have bailed out Washington over Saddam's oil threat, but they're unhappy about U.S. support for the Jewish state
BY TONY KARON

Saudi Arabia doesn't like Saddam Hussein. And besides, there's money to be made pumping more oil at current prices. That meant good news Monday for Western consumers, as Iraq was forced to back off from its threat to cut its oil output and reopen the taps it closed last Friday. Baghdad was left little choice after the Saudis undertook to fill the shortfall left on world markets by the withdrawal of Iraq's daily output of 2.5 million barrels, thereby nullifying the impact of Saddam's latest gambit. Iraq had hoped that by raising pressure on the world oil price it would strengthen its campaign to break out of the U.N. sanctions regime imposed on Baghdad at the end of the Gulf War.

One country that will find little to cheer about in the Saudis' latest rescue of Western consumers is Israel. While it's in Saudi Arabia's self-interest to help out the West in this instance — both to maintain stability in world oil prices and to deny a victory to its belligerent Iraqi neighbor — Riyadh also has some demands of its own. The Saudi leadership is reportedly outraged by Israel's reaction to the latest Palestinian uprising, and wants to see the U.S. play a more evenhanded role in the region. Crown Prince Abdullah, de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia since his half brother King Fahd's stroke, has warned, for example, that the kingdom would break ties with any country that moved its embassy to the disputed city of Jerusalem.

Israel proclaims the Holy City as its capital, and although few countries have moved their embassies there from Tel Aviv, moving the embassy there is a popular call in U.S. domestic politics. Indeed, both the Gore and the Bush campaigns committed themselves during the election to moving the embassy, but they may be reluctant to stir up Arab hostility — particularly if that translated into higher oil prices. Of course, the Saudis are not threatening and make no overt linkage between their geopolitical positions and their stance on oil prices. In fact, Saudi Arabia's official position is that it wants the oil price issue depoliticized. But there is mounting domestic political pressure on the royal family to take a tougher stand on Israel and distance itself from U.S. influence. Moments like the one last week when an Iraqi gambit on oil suddenly made Saudi Arabia Washington's most important friend in the region highlight the U.S. need to keep the Saudis sweet. And in the Middle East, Washington can't please all of its friends all the time.

I recall hearing a statement that the best of the leaders are those who pray for their people and whose people pray for them, and the worst of leaders are those whose people pray against them!

Assalam ualykum,

The worst are the leaders who oppress their own people. Why should I pray for them? What have they done for Muslims and Islam? Maybe Clinton and ex-President Bush can pray for them. They can pray for each other. Because of one stupid man, Sadam Hussain, the Saudis are applauding and aiding the American government against their own brothers and sisters. American has the power and means to kill Saddam Hussain and then blame it on others, why haven't they done that? What's their purpose? Please visit this link and tell me why should I pray for the Saud family?

This is my prayer: O Allah, humiliate the Saud family, those that deserve the humiliation from amongst them, get rid of unjust tyrants from the blessed land, and give us a just ruler who will guide the whole of Ummah and not just Saudi Arabia. Ameen.

SALAAM,
to saleema,
I don't think kashif said that you should pray for them. he meant that the saud family are the worst of leaders because their people pray against them.
I should also like to state that most gulity person in this situation is saddam hussain. HE put the iraqi people in this position. HE gave the americans the excuse to use to these unjust and unfair sanctions. so may he be damned as well as the saud family.

Salamu Aliakom,

The Al Saud family has not stopped there. They have banned the shaikhs in masjid al Haram from making duah AGAINST the yahood. Yes, you read it correctly, duah against the yahood in masjid al haram has been banned by Al Saud.

Cowards subhana Allah ...

When did this order (that prayers against the yahood will not be made in the Haram) come through?? If memory serves me right, I heard the Imam make dua in the witr prayers a few days ago.

I was watching Al Jazeera, (Qatar news channel) and every Sunday they bring a shaikh to speak on an Islamic show. Well last Sunday they brought Shaikh Qaradawi and some ppl were asking him questions on the phone, and a sister called up saying that she didn't hear them say the duah against al yahood, so Shaikh Qaradawi commented that he had been in Makkah the week before, and strangely enough not heard them saying the duah.

When did you hear them say it? After salat al witr? Hmm it is possible that there was an uproar and Al-Saud have changed their minds.

Assalam ualykum,

Not the SAUDIS! The SAUD family! The family of the so called self elected, "Crown Prince" of Saudi Arabia. The family who think that its their God-given right to rule over Saudi Arabia, the country of our beloved Prophet, [saw], without holding elections, who oppress the mujahideens, who kiss up to American and Israel.

wassalam
