Assalam,
A while back, somebody on this board was talking about a poet named, Rumi. I'm very curious about him. Is his poems any good? I wanna go to the libary next week and see what I can find on him.

He was a Turkish Sufi waaaayy back in the day, he wrote numerous poetry books.  It's "cool" to read him nowadays.  I read one short book, it was indeed some beautiful love poems.

I don't like his poems at all, but I guess some people do on this board do.  I don't like the analogies he uses with wine, its a real turn off for me.  I mean why not use milk as an analogy instead of wine, the Prophet (SAW) did.  Se7en can insha'Allah post up that hadith. ;)

Ok, I found it here its. Rasulullah, salAllahu alayhe wa salam, once mentioned that he had a dream that he drank milk from a vessel, to the extent that it dripped down his chin into his beard. He then handed the glass to Umar ibn Khattab radhiAllahu anh who drank from it. Rasulullah, salAllahu alayhe wa salam, mentioned that this vessel of milk symbolized knowledge, first his taking from it and instructing Umar ra by it.

*SIGH*

wine is a good analogy because you are intoxicated with love of god...just like when your drunk the words are something that are no longer under your control, your feet are no longer your own ..etc.. etc but then you must return again and again and life is a hangover for you

remember

' a jug of wine a loaf of bread and thou'?
from omar kayyam? the miserable wretch fitzgerald
mistranslated kayyam (as well as adding a few of his own verses)

it is not about kayyam and his girl ,

the jug of wine is made of clay..humans are made of clay..god is the thou etc etc

sufi poetry has it's symbols because our words do not suffice..just remember you are a tiny speck of dust in a country, on a continent, on the land, on the planet, in the solar system, in the galaxy in one of the alam i mithals ...yet your heart can contain allah!

You know the pre-Islamic Arabs had over 100 different words for wine.  Their poetry was filled with this.

Something to consider, did Rasullah (SAW) ever use the wine that intoxicates in this world to describe the love for Allah (SWT) ?
