How do you wear your hijab?

I have never been able to find a type of hijab that I've been totally satisfied with.  I'm talking about everything-not just a head piece but loose clothing too.  I am uncomfortable a lot of the time in what I wear and I can't seem to find just the right style for me.  I hate pins but I can never get a hijab to stay on my head wrapped around like the way some Saudi and Jordanian sisters do it.  And I find jilbabs are so bulky sometimes although they are easy to wear.  So, anyways, I would like to know what ways other sisters wear their hijab and what they find is most comfortable.    Also, what do you find appropriate to wear?  I don't want to go into the whole pants vs. skirts debate.  Rather, I would like to know if sisters avoid wearing bright colors, prints, etc.

Asalaamu Alaikum,
I know how you feel, I see sisters with a different style everyday and I have no idea how they tie their hijabs. Plain me LoL the same way everyday. I basically wear long skirts (Ross should pay some tribute to us Muslims, we shop there year-round LoL, they are the only store I know that sale long sleeves in summer) I also wear Shalwar Kameez alot (it's a long shirt normally to the knees with slits on the side and baggy pants underneath, for those of you who don't know) I have heard there is a book, about differnt ways to tie the hijab, Does anyone know the name?

I have seen this book as I was going to purchase it.  As for the name I can't remember but when you see this book it says (if I remember correctly) something about how to wear it.  But I look at some of the illustrations and I becoms to confused  you had to take lessons on how to follow their "how to wrap"  but they had some beautiful head wraps in there.

As for the colors thing.  If you were to look at all the beautiful flowers in many shades that Allah has made.  Why then can't you be like some of those flowers in terms of colors?

Salaam 'Alaikum

The book is called "Focus on Scarf Styling," and it's by Leila Barron.  The styles are somewhat fancy though... maybe not styles you'd want to do everyday.

The 'wrapping' scarf that the Saudia and Jordanian sisters wear is called Shayla.  Al Hediya has instructions on how to do it, but you really have to practice it.  No harm in wearing a pin, I know some sisters that fasten it with a pin.

I wear mine "Algerian" style (according to a friend). That is, pinned at the neck, and then the right side taken, wrapped around the neck/ chin, and pinned high up on the back of the head.

I always wear pins, but I am very particular w/ them.  I like the kind they have in Jordan, oval, pearlescent.  Don't use safety pins, as they will catch and tear in the fabric.

Appropriate clothes are hard to find... many long skirts also have long slits.  I wear both American and Arab style clothing.  My main goal in clothing right now is that it is properly covering and that it is 'accessible,' as I am a nursing mom.  I do like those new style of abaya, which velcro at the shoulders and have velvet or embroidered trim.  You can get them in many colors (with matching shayla), but most popular is black.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

I have *no* sense of style whatsoever :)  My friends do though.

Dhikr was almost elected best dressed this year for our senior class.  (can you imagine if a hijabi was elected best dressed, that would have been awesome!)  She has an awesome sense of style, she brings the latest color, fashion, everything, into the way she dresses and she makes a Muslim woman look stylin and beautiful and dignified and modest all at the same time. :)

My other dear friend, khathija, is the chic one among us, very classic, long dresses, feminine, graceful... mashaAllah dhikr's the "trendy" one, khathija's the "chic" one, and I'm like, whatever. hahhaa :)  Kiwi is stylin too :)

MashaAllah these girls prove that you can wear hijaab and still have style :)

I wear dark colors usually, just because I'm comfortable with it.  I usually wear skirts, jilbabs on occasion.  At school I'm dressed awfully because I just don't have time in the morning to care, so I don't go for the complex hijab then.

Maybe you can get some big scarves, that way you don't have to pin it in eighteen places, just wear it straight down in the front.

Yeah decent clothing is hard to find, but there are some things you definitely need to be halal. A plain black skirt with no slits that hits your ankles... this is essential, find one! Because then you can buy other skirts or dresses with slits etc and wear that underneath.. layering sisters, it works :)

Assalamu alaikum,

There's a book out there called "100 Ways to Wear the Hijaab."  Maybe that would help!

Don't ask me how I know :)

What I do to the long skirts with slits is: depending the way the slit is made I just sew it if it is still flair enough so I don't have to take baby steps.  As Se7en suggested I have long slips the color of the skirts to wear under it. these are really simple to make if you are the sewing type!

Asalamu Alaikum,

As far as the head scarf goes, I just came across a book that seems interesting. It has different "styles" to wear your hijab that are beautiful.
The book is located on the following website
http://www.astrolabepictures.com/astrolabe

And as far as style of dress. I've found many modest, yet functional style on the Today's Muslim Woman site. I can't find the link here at work but I saved it at home. I'll provide it later on today.
Insh'Allah

Well, I can't say I wear hijab, but my wife doesn't really like pins or scarves, so she wears the two-piece hijab.  It's sort of stretchy, so it fits snugly without having to be fastened.  I think a lot of Islamic clothing vendors carry them, and you're sure to find them at an ISNA bazaar.  Only problem (if it is a problem) is that I've only seen them in solid colors, and not many at that.  My wife has white, black, cream, brown, and navy, I think.  And she got all but white and black at ISNA.  Hope this helps.

Wassalam,
Shahid.

salam,

hehe im algerien and i wear my scarf the way umm zaid mentioned, but i dont think its called the "algerien" way , in algeria, they pin the scarf in the front, make a knot and just let it hang loose in the front so as to cover their bosom. and thanks se7en for the comments:)

My favorite outfit is a long shirt with a long skirt. for hijab, I wear one that you can just slip one , its sewn down the front, and its elastic so you don't have to worry about pins.

How does one wear Hijab? huh! Its like asking how many different types of human nature are there.

As se7en puts it, the "trendy" one, and the "chic" one are all part of the hijab because 'I think' hijab basically arises from the heart, rtaher than a mere costume.

Anyways, i once happened to read an article by a a female about Hijab thats called 'convertible YoYo' which i put up here http://www.jaihoon.com/pearls/yoyo.htm

Wearing the hijab is something that u have to truly master, however its also something that takes time. I mean in my own experience, i must have gone through 6 different styles..heh.. its evident in the pictures over time, im sure its the same story for all the veteran hijabis here..
but now ive mainy stuck to the "algerian" method, even though its really not algerian, like kiwi im a first class algerian and they just tie it in the front, thas it..hah..but its all good.. This style is easy and looks classy with anything, so i suggest u start with this method (the "algerian" one).
Inshallah ALLah will help u and grant u afiya
good luck :)

I've just fallen in love with the two piece, slip-on hijabs!!! This is great and easy for work! no loose or falling ends (I think it looks more professional). The ones that I wear often now have beads on the head piece matching pattern on the bottom of the hijab.
I feel so...elegant!

slm naaz :)

theres no "proper" way of wearing it. it just has to cover everything but your face. you could wear it wrapped around dupatta style. or just do a square folded into a triangle pinned under your neck. or all different types of fancy ways in between.

as long as in your heart you know you are doing what's right and that it's for Allah and don't care what other people think of it then don't worry about it :)

you can start out wearing it just to certain events on the way to mosque and back.. at the market (that will toughen you up ;)) and work your way up

take care inshallah

i used to be all about black georgette (is that how you spell it?) scarves, but recently, since i got back from umrah, i've found a thing for the saudi style...shayla.  they're really classy and go good with just about anything you're wearing...skirts, jilbabs, abayyas...and all you really need is a straight pin on top, and the saudi women use bobby pins on the side, instead of tucking it in...it works real nicely.

Bismillah and salam,

ok this is my girlie contribution even though i am alot plainer with both colors and style (on the outside that is)...

http://www.azizahmagazine.com/upfrontPg.htm     I like the purple one in the premiere issue but it would have to be alittle more covered at the sides and goes to the chin.

miss march 2001 reminds me of the whole japanese concept of working with the fabric to create effect.
i like how miss jan.2001 did it there very similar to the one someone has already posted up earlier but she uses a bigger hijab so that the front remains covered

My mom hates it when i don't wear the matching dupata with my shalwar qmeez and instead don on a trinagular scarf. So i try to wear dupatas as much as possible with shalwar qmeez to make her feel better. and i have tried all sorts of different ways to cover everything. Two of those stlyes are pretty easy. i usually wear it like that. they other two are hard, never tried it though. My sister did, or actually, my friend put it on her one time. i wasn't paying attention. :)

u know those shalwar qmeezt that's in fashion, with the see through net dupata? Man...do i hate those. here's what i do with those. I tie a black scarf underneath usually or some other color mathching the dupata so my hair won't show. then I put the dupata on like the two easy styles in the middle that were shown by the model--(the pinkish and the white/creamy one.) except i don't show my neck.

wait. that didn't help. oh well.

Our TV news station interviewed two muslim women. The titles were the Traditional Muslim Woman and the Modern Muslim Woman.
They were shown on seperate nights.

Our "traditional" did a nice job- made a positive outlook on women in Islam.

The "modern"- was - well- uncovered... and she made us look so oppressed.... the dynamics were interesting.

slm,

Yo that "four hijab styles" link is just plain scary!!! :o:o

Anyways, I've never been able to do anything special with my hijab, though I really wish I could.  Usually I just wear the plain traingular ones, and on special occasions I pull out the rectangular ones.  Have you guys seen the style where people pin it behind their neck, and then pull the ends forward and just wrap them aroudn their necks? Well, I don't do it like that...but if I did...I'd look like a pirate!! Does anyone else have that problem?  I think fancy hijabs all make me look like a pirate.

As far as shalwar kameez is concerned, I like wearing the dupatta it comes with as well.  If the dupatta is silk, then I usually make it into a triangle and then wear it like a normal hijab, that usually works out well.  Speaking of Shalwar kameez (pakistani dress) have you guys seen the new fashion??  Straight or boot leg pants, really fitted kameez that comes above the knee... with short sleeves! It looks so nice, unfortunately!  I told my cousin to send me one, at least I can wear it to women's functions!  Do any of you guys buy un-hijabi clothes and then "hijabatize" them?  I bought this one sweater once--  It was sleeveless, and had SUCH a deep neck.  So I've worn it like once--with a shirt under it AND over it! hahaha..I could have just NOT bought it and saved myself the trouble...:)

Ok back to work!
Wassalam,
Nazia
