Please call on behalf of this innocent man

I just sent a letter to the Chicago Tribune (see below) and I once again ask you to call President Clinton at 202-456-1111, press 0
and tell the White House Operator that you want President Clinton to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier. It will take just a moment
or two (you don't have the opportunity to make a long statement, even if you wanted to) and could well be a critical factor leading to
some measure of justice for a man who has been badly abused by the FBI and our prison system.

My thanks, Steven

Dear Chicago Tribune:

The December 7 Tribune reported that FBI Director Louis Freeh is urgeing President Clinton not grant clemency to Leonard Peltier,
a Native American activist convicted of killing two FBI agents. Freeh called Peltier a "vicious murderer of a son and father".

In fact, the trial, conviction and punishment of Leonard Peltier has been consistently challenged by legal experts. The prosecution
has admitted, for example, that "we can't prove who shot those agents".  The bottom line is that Peltier was a leader of the
American Indian Movement and he was present when the shootings took place. Our government used these tragic events (in which
a Native American was also killed; his murder was never even investigated) to lock up Peltier and throw away the key.

Mr. Peltier has now served more than 24 years in prison. During this time he has suffered a stroke which left
him partially blind in one eye. For many years he had a seriously debilitating jaw condition which left him unable
to chew properly and caused consistent pain and headaches. The prison medical facilities could not properly
treat this condition, and two prison surgeries have only worsened matters. A Mayo Clinic physician offered to
repair the jaw for free, but was turned down again and again until the United Nations Raporteur sharply rebuked
the United States for subjecting Mr. Peltier to inhuman conditions.

Today, Mr. Peltier continues to suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. According to
an affiliate of Physicians for Human Rights, he risks blindness, kidney failure and stroke in the future, given his
inadequate diet, living conditions, and health care.

It is time for the FBI to end its vendetta against Mr. Peltier. It is time for President Clinton to correct an injustice
by granting clemency to Leonard Peltier.

Sincerely,
