Religious Leader Killed in Pakistan Updated 5:29 AM ET December 18, 2000 KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) - A prominent Pakistani religious figure was shot and killed as he walked to a mosque on Monday for early morning prayers, police said. Dr. Athar Quereshi, a former leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, or the Party of Islam, was shot by a man who stepped out of a car in the center of Karachi. The gunman and two other men fled in the car. No one claimed responsibility. Police said they were uncertain of the motive. "It is an act of terrorism that a peaceful person like Athar Quereshi is killed," said Munawar Hassan, secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, a small but well-organized party. "The motive is to create a scare. The government has failed to protect law-abiding citizens." Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, has been wracked by ethnic, religious and politically motivated violence in recent years. Hundreds of people have been killed. The slaying came a day after hundreds of the party's supporters defied a ban on public demonstrations and rallied in Karachi and Lahore, demanding the resignation of Gen. Pervez Musharraf, ruler of the 14-month-old military government. |

| Assalam ualykum, I'm not surprised. Next door neighbors? I doubt it, he wasn't that important in their eyes, no threat of anykind to them. These things have been hapening for a long time now. May Allah have His Mercy on Him, and grant him Jannah. wassalam |

| Assalam, This is horrible and a shame! Why is it that so many Muslims get murdered over someone's stupidness and crazyness??? Was the killer a "Muslim" by the way???? |
