Rodent phobias

Assalamu alaikum,

Last friday after Juma' prayers, I met a friend whom I haven't seen for a while.  So we walked out of hte hall together me headed back to the lab and her to her apartment. We were talking until she suddenly stopped in her tracks gasping for air then *shouted* "Oh oh it's a mouse, the poor thing, it's a mouse.."  A man 50 metres away walking in the opposite direction turned his head towards her screeching to see what had happenned! Obviously she saw a mouse on the side walk and I later glanced the frightend little creature climbing on the snow at the side of the road (we had quite a bit of snow accumulation earlier in the week).  The mouse quickly disappeared as she tried to calm down. She said that was by far her *calmest* reaction to coming to such a close proximity to a rodent!!  Well, I just couldn't stop laughing at her.  When I saw the mouse, I was a bit nervous, but more in wonderment, humm a mouse on a pile of snow, isn't it too cold for him(or her :))? I was pretty glum that day but that moment lightened up the rest of the afternoon, alhamdolellah :)

I don't have sisters so I don't know whether or not this is 'normal' behaviour, but I know my sister-in-law would've freaked out, she once was chased by a bee when were in a park and she was running around screaming.  Hmmm it seems very few women are incapable of not making a scene at the sight of a mice/bugs?

This reminds me of a jumah prayer I was at 2 or 3 years ago.  I was sitting in the front row and the door was open.  This grasshopper, or grasshopper type bug comes in and is walking along in the front row near the top where the imam is supposed to give the khutbah from.  I'm sitting in the middle and the people around me are busy reading their Qurans not paying attention to the bug, but I am and am a little scared and wondering what should I do.  Well guess what, the bug gets to the middle of the first row and stops and now he starts to come towards me.  Now I'm really scared.  He's getting closer and closer, and my heart is beating faster and faster.  I'm thinking to myself what should I do, am I the only one that sees it?

Then as he is about to come towards me I lift up my leg and he goes right underneath it into the 2nd row.  I breathe a sigh of relief then I say, oh oh what if he decides to come back and attack me.  My heart starts to race again.

I turn around and see a bunch of frightened young men jumping up from where they were.  There was one brave soul there that picked up the bug on a piece of paper and placed it outside.  :)

Now that you mention it.

I was at Isha prayer and there was a mouse (half dead from the poisoning) struggling to get back to his hole and die in peace.  Well if you could hae seen the sisters jumping on chairs and screaming, you would have thought the critter was chasing them trying to catch one of them.  In reality it was further being frightened to death from these hysterical women.  Now I'm a little frightened of them myself but watching these women, one pregnant on the chair refusing to come down unless someone got him, made me rethink my position.  I must admit I was not the brave sister who finally got a cup and scooped the mouse into it.  After all it was still *alive* ugh!

I went to the meat store with my young son- who was about three at the time. As I opened the door I hear men shouting in Arabic- with clearly terrified voices.
I wonder if it was a hold up- I have the safety of my child in mind. Do I go in an get an ID of the burgerler, do I run- but leave my Muslim brothers to defend themselves? I say Bismillah and walk in.
No one is at the register. Uh???
They are all in the butcher room- not arguing but terrified. Oh how I wished I understood what they were saying.
They see me peering in and immediately calmed down.
"As salaamu alaykum- I pensively asked - is everything ok?"
There were three grown men- all over the age of 40 and no one weighing less than 250lbs.
"yeah, there is a snake in there"
Tee Hee- I could not help but chuckle. (so much for a robber)Inside I was dying of laughter.
He explained that they were 'having a hard time'
So me in my ultra "woman hear me roar" frame of mind- offer with out thinking- to get it out for them.
Unfortuantely my intentions were not totally honorable- I just wanted to have a little fun male bashing. i am woman...
They were so greatful that I would get it out.
Did I fail to mention- that I have never touched a snake in my life- much less know how to catch one?
With my heart racing, lips making every dua I knew, and young son who is proud of his mama at my side- I go in the butcher room.
I had no idea what to do. Was it poisnous? Do snakes have teeth? Are the men watching me? Ya Allah. My roar was pretty weak. Allah swt knew it, and was teaching me a lesson.
I turned around and surely the men were watching. I asked them not to- because I needed to lift my jilbob. ( I did not need an audience- it was the only excuse I could think of)
I was scared, Why did I think I could show them up?  I was pleading with the snake to slide into the bag- yeah right. So I got a stick and tried pushing it in.
As I picked it up- it reared its ugly head- I think its head grew 10 times larger and i saw two gigantic fangs! This I truely saw.
Allah swt was teaching me a good lesson. I almost passed out in fright!! By His swt mercy the snake then slid in the bag.
Calmly- by outward appearences, I walked out the store- head held high, with the snake.
I was a hero and got a free chicken.
Did I mention that later on I found out it was a garter snake...

Kathy, that one brought tears to my eyes!

The first moral is Allah knows best and has a humor that can't be beat. :)

But the other moral to the story is Sisters get things done. :-)

Assalamu Alaikum,

Kathy, you are the bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Masha'Allah.

Actually, I am not a big fan of the amphibian species myself, however, I occasionally make exceptions.  For example, we have a pet lizard(gekko) named Sally, and she is awesome! I have no problem picking her up, feeding her worms (with my hands!) or even letting her crawl all over my arms. But take me to Pakistan and put me in a hot bathroom with one of their generic greenish/brown lizards crawling on the walls and I will absolutely freak!  One night in pakistan, me and my two girl cousins were getting ready for a "night of fun."  We had the room to ourselves that night and we were all excited we didn't have to share with with all our little cousins.  But Mr.Chipkalee (a lizard) had to make an appearence and ruin our innocent fun.  Poor thing, we, or rather, my cousin :)  chased that lil sucker with a can of bug spray and a chappal(sandal)all over the room.  I swear, the thing must have been the size of my pinky, but we were still scared to death.  We never did kill it, it ultimately crawled into this locked closet, and we were left with the anticipation of his return in our hearts, and the smell of toxic pakistani bug spray in the air.  *sigh*

We had a pet snake for a couple of days as well.  I had no problems holding him either. *shrug*
So I guess if we embrace these rodents as members of our families, the element of fear is eliminated.  You might want to try it next time you see some scuzzy mouse, or crunchy cricket.  ;)

Take Care,
Wasalam

hahahhahah these stories are SO funny :)
Nazia.. how could u'll have a lizard for a pet!!!!!! ughhhhhhhh!!!! and then let it crawl all over you :o . I might be mistaken but isn't it not allowed to keep animals with fangs as pets??
Anyways..the thing that really scares the daylights outta me are ROACHES. Yuck, i cannot bear the sight of them. Those tiny ones might be ok...but those big, flying ones......aaaaahhhhhhh
And I actaully had to dissect one in biology class. If grades hadn't been involved I'd never have done it :o
And maybe I should also mention that once a monkey (those big tailless ones) entered my hostel room while my roommate and I were sleeping and started to munch on some snacks on the table. That was pretty scary too.

So everyone , keep those stories rollin' :)

Assalam,
Ok, I got one.
Last summer I went to Palestine. I was on my way to
my grandmother's house when I decided to get in a Taxi.
So the driver is driving me there when all of a sudden-a bee flies into the car.
I was soooo nervous! I didn't want to make a fool out of myself. So I opened the window all the way and I prayed the bee would fly back out. Of course it didn't. If that bee landed on me-I would actually make a sense. But lucky I got to my g-ma's house in time.
Out of all the things that scare me-it's insects and some reptiles.
I remember when I was little, I use to pick up bugs and play with them. Mostly rolly-pollies and lightening bugs. Now I just can't stand them.

Salamu Aliakom,

Rodents? Mice really give me the heeby jeebies. But alhamdulilah we have 3 cats, and 1 of them has a knack for catching them.

Roaches? Ya Allah, I have a history with them. Check out http://www.zawaj.com/e_tales.html
and click on "Insects Don't Scare Me". Heh, i pray that none of you have gotten involved with roaches as much as I have.

Sis Kathy, masha Allah that was very brave of you to try and get the snake. Me? I'd have probably grabbed some pole and bashed it's head in, or maybe chucked a huge rock at it. But direct contact with it? Heh noooooooo way.

Malika..I studied in India where monkeys are "revered" and the ppl don't allow the muncipality officials to catch then even though they're a major nuisance in many cities, although our's had only recently been "invaded" by them.

It was a really hot day so my roommate and I went to sleep wiht the balcony door open so as to let in some cool breeze. Well the whole night passed without incident (probably the monkey community were also sleeping :) )but right after fajr I was awakened by this crunching sorta noise and I raise my head to directly look into the eyes of a big simian. It stared back at me for a moment and then calmy proceeded to finish whatever was left in the snacks packet. My heart started racing and I could hardly breath. In a barely audible wisper I called out to my roommate. She woke all bleary eyed and started to say something when i pointed at the monkey. Immmediately she sat bolt upright. We looked at each other, neihter of us knew what to do. Slowly we just got up from our beds and tiptoed to the door and got out. All this while Bandar Sahab( Mr. monkey) was happily devouring our food. After getting out we started banging on the door and in general making a lot of noise. Our neighbours thought we'd probably gone mad or something :) By then the monkey had probably had its fill so it leaped out the balcony door. Phewww ..so that was the end of it. Alhumdulillah it didn't attack or bite ( I've heard of those things happening) .Then we'd probably have to get some rabies shots :o...Did I mention that I'm also afraid of needles ?

Hey Basha that was reallllllyyy scary. :o
I could hardly get myself to even LOOK at that alomost lifelike image of the roach! And roaches are so hardy that I don't think any spray really works against them. One really good way to get rid of 'em is to sprinkle some boric acid powder (usually available at most drug stores) in nooks and corners and any place they hide. I think that's by far the most effective way to eliminate them.

as salaamu alaikum,

ummm... you meant to say reptile, right? :)

kathy mashallah... a garter snake? maaann... good thing you didng know that before hand.

hmm... the only rodent story i have is a few years back we had two small field mice in our garage. so my dad placed a couple of old fasioned mouse traps out (this was during ramadan, so he baited them with pieces of dates :D ). well the next morning when we went into the garage we found one mouse caught by just its paws in the trap... poor thing :( i dont remember if it was still alive or not but to see how it was just caught by its paws and the food by its mouth was just heartbreaking...

but anyway it was necessary i suppose...

A garter snake is probably the most harmless of all snakes. I do not even think that they have teeth.

Sis, did you read the bit about "Soldier". Well that stuff literally kills roaches on contact. I have no idea what they put in there, but most definatly it can choke and nearly kill a human being too.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Al Basha that was *so* funny, I was on the floor...

"There I was lounging on the couch, minding my own business when all of a sudden a spew of black creepy crawlies came gushing from underneath the couch. Boy did they give me the heeby jeebies. I almost fell off the couch when I threw up my legs to avoid them"

"For the rest of the day he poked fun at me by pointing randomly and saying, 'Watch out for that roach!'"

Hahahaha, that cracked me up..

Check this out... at the alim program this summer we're sitting in this class with br. mokhtar.  It's a deep spiritual topic and his voice is very soft and quiet, the whole room is silent.  All of a sudden four sisters in the front row start screaming, br. mokhtar jumps up too because he thought something happened.  Then the sisters lift up their bookbags and everyone in the room watches this *big* *fat* bug mosey across the floor.  Everyone is focusing on the bug, not br. mokhtar.  Then it goes over to the brothers side and they start freaking out too heheh.. he starts lecturing us on focusing, on how bugs are creatures who are in dhikr of Allah at all times and we should just leave it alone and respect it and let it do what it's doing... So we focus for maybe five minutes and then we hear a *crunch*...  one of the brothers stepped on the bug!  Br. Mokhtar was like "did you do that on purpose?!" he was like no no I swear.. wAllahi I didn't kill him on purpose..
hahah.. then br. mokhtar's like "aren't you *MEN*?!  Pick it up and bring it outside."  So all the brothers look at each other and finally one brave brother picks it up and brings it outside.

hehehehe I think you have to have been there :)

Assalamu alaikum,

I am really enjoying all these anecdotes.  Very whimsical indeed.

Arshad- grasshoppers are very innocuous. Just shoo them away next time.

Malika- Women climbing on chairs at the sight of a drowsy mouse...hehe, they think mice are acrophobic :)

Kathy- I can't tell the difference between a garter snake and the other types; to me they are all scary. I would have ran out of the store on the instance of hearing the word "snake". You are very brave indeed to coax it into the brown bag and out of the store.

Nazia- You seem to have domesticated your lizzard :) But think about it, is it really better for Sally to rely on you for food or would it be better for her to learn survival skills in the wilderness... hehe j/k, all to their tastes. Me, call me boring, but I would have taken a cat as pet.

ABC- A monkey, man that's sure would have caused my heart to stop for few seconds. Have you seen the 'cute' desert lizzards in Kuwait yet? J/K, they are disgusting but I still have fond memories of running away when seeing them in our backyard when we lived there.

Meraj- Catching a mouse with a date...try a cat next time :) They're really good at it :)

Sara- I would have refused to pay the cab driver on account of having to suffer through the ride by the presence of that bug ;)

Al-Basha- Hehe, roaches trying to cool off in your grandparents aparentment...I take it you haven't encountered the little critters until that instance...hehe, cute!

Se7en- So, were you at all scared when the roach 'mosied' into your halaqa?

Wassalam

Salamu Aliakom,

Se7en glad you like the story alhamdulilah :)

The roach in the masjid? hmm what was it doing in there yikes. I remember once i went on all brothers camp, and we got up to pray Fajr. Well heh while we were praying all of a sudden one of the brothers started jumping hysterically.

So after the salat we asked him what was going on and it turns out there was this frog hopping after a cricket that was next to him hahah :)

Mona, i hadn't seen them up close and personal till that incident. Of course when I found out there was such a thing as "flying roaches" I thanked Allah that I never encountered one of those. I have seen them dead and I hope I never have to see them alive insha Allah.
