The following are notes from a Ramadan khutbah from a sister on this board out in the west.

(paraphrased for some parts. in addition, it's too difficult to get all the ayahs and hadiths reference notations noted.)gaven by some one else today

a group of people got together and said Ali is very smart masha'allah, so let's ask him a question. They saw him go by and asked, Ya 'Ali, what's the strongest thing created by Allah?

Ali answered 10 things.

The mountains have been here on earth for ages. It has always existed here during the time of man and still is. So it must be the strongest thing created by Allah.

But metal can cut down rocks, so metal must be the strongest thing created by Allah.

Fire can melt metal, so fire is the strongest thing created by Allah.

Water can cool fire..so water is the strongest thing created by Allah.

Clouds bring water...so then the clouds must be the strongest thing created by Allah.

Wind directs the clouds so the wind must be the strongest thing created by Allah.

But son of Adam is stronger..(forgot the beg to this) so he is the strongest thing created by Allah.

However, intoxicants overpowers man, so intoxicants are stronger.

But sleep keeps man from being intoxicated so sleep is the strongest thing created.

anxiety overpowers sleep so it is the strongest thing created by Allah, so it is anxiety.

Anxiety is from Allah. so when Prophet Muhammad saw used to wake up in the morning, he used to make dua seeking refuge from 7 things one of them which is anxiety and sadness. anxiety is the worry of the future while sadness is worrying of the past. so from both of them, you miss out on living today this is why the prophet muhammad saw used to seek refuge from both of them.

Ibn Hathem (?) said what all human beings ponder over regardless if they are old or young, etc is that they want to be anxiety free, and the best medication for this is to reflect on the hereafter. If you're overcome by sadness, know that you will be compensated in the hereafter.

Anxiety should not be in the heart of a muslim, because there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and that is how a muslim should think, this should console us that things will get brighter.

One time, prophet muhammad saw visited an old bedouin who had a very high fever. the prophet tried to console him by saying that perhaps the fever is a purification for his sins (he was giving him the bright side to the matter), but the bedouin desolately replied no, it's a harsh fever that will lead me to the grave. Prophet Muhammad saw said if that's how you perceive it to be then, let it take you to your grave; you could have looked at it in a better way.

so again, one characteristic of a muslim, is to always be optimistic. When Aisha radiallahu anha talked about the prophet saw, she said that the prophet saw loved optimism. No matter how hard things were, he would always be optimistic and one instance was during the battle of ahzab. The prophet saw would console the believers and said that he has been given a revelation that they will be given a future treasure (?) etc...and others would reply we can't leave the city and the prophet is foreseeing a future with treasure(?)...so the prophet saw was teaching ppl to be optimistic no matter how hard things are, to always be optimisic when faced with troubles (always pray to Allah etc)

another example, one time prophet isa was among his companions and they were passing by and saw a dead dog on the path. his companions started complaing what awful stench the dog, they said "look at the stinking dog!" while Isa alayhi salaam, replied, "but he has very nice white teeth!" and they replied but he's dead! prophet isa said that is how you perceive it to be by looking only at the bad things when you should look at the bright side instead.

(end)

Lesson: You should never lose hope, never be pessimistic as a Muslim but should look at things with an optimistic attitude along with making duas to Allah swt to better your condition etc.
