Hassan Basri was walking and saw a big halaqah going on, so he stopped and decided to listen and hear what the shaikh had to say.
There was a young man who said he is afflicted with a disease which Allah might not have created a cure for. The shaikh who is also a doctor besides a religious scholar admonished him by saying, astaghfirullah, repent to Allah; the prophet (muhammad) sallalahu alayhi wa salaam said for every disease, Allah swt has created a cure, so tell me what it is as I might have something to cure it.
The young man replied, i feel so far away from Allah..I don't feel close to him but i want to be...etc..when the young man finished, he started weeping and crying, and the shaykh began weeping and crying, and everyone in the circle began weeping and crying.
The shaykh then said, young man, i have a prescription for you and if you follow it, Allah will cure your affliction for you. He said, young man the prescription is as follows:
get yourself roots of patience and leaf of sincerity and put them in a cup of taqwah. mix them and add in water of fear of Allah. use hope to warm it up and drink with the hand that is constantly making dhikr to Allah and drink..(i missed this part)..and keep yourself away from stinginess and greed and Allah swt will cure you for certain if you follow through it.

Taqwa is used so many times but does not get implemented. Once Amr (?) asked what is taqwa? what does it really mean? Umar (?) said, if you were to walk on a street full of thorns without shoes, what will you do? Amr said, I would lift up my garment and watch over my steps as to not to step on the thorns. Umar replied this is what taqwa is.

Taqwa, linguistically in arabic, means prevention (?) [like a defense]. For example, if it was cold, you would wear a coat. for a coat to protect you from the cold, it would depend on the coat's quality and quantity in order to better shield and prevent the cold from penetrating you. so is the shield of taqwa. to create a shield is by performing acts of nafl, good deeds, etc...

in regards to "leaves of sincerity"..prophet muhammad saw said on the day of judgement, there will be people with deeds presented in front of them. some good deeds will be piled so high (that they will reach the mtn or sky or something) and then will vanish suddenly. the companions asked, what happened? what did they do? the prophet replied, these are the people that when they were in public were in the best of behavior and when in private, transgressed all limits imposed upon them by Allah.

usually when we think of hell, we think of it as being occupied by mushriks or kafirs etc..but prophet muhammad said the hellfire is not warmed yet, those who will be used as fuels are 3 kinds of people, all of who are MUSLIMS!
the 3 kinds would be: (you can read the hadeeth in detail, it was briefly paraphrased in the khutbah)

one who is very knowledgeable in matters of deen. Allah will ask what did you do for me? the man will reply i learned for your sake etc etc..Allah will answer, nay, you did it so ppl will say what a knowledgeable man he is..and the ppl have said it so you got your reward. then Allah swt will say throw him into the hellfire.

the second person will be a shaheed/matyr who will claim to have fought in the way of Allah. but again, it was for public praise and he would be thrown into the fire.

the third person was a philanthropist, giving away money in the name of Allah for public praise and he too will be thrown into the fire.

so it's important that for whatever good deeds we do, we do it for Allah swt alone.

and what really is sincerity? it is when you do something seeking no other witness and seeking no reward except from Allah.
(end)

may Allah azza wa jallah help us in committing actions SOLELY for His sake alone and not to fall prey for public admiration!!! ameen wa ajmaeen.
