[MADRASA] My "Muslim" Teacher biased and misrepresenting Islam

Asalaamu alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak to all,
It has been a while since I was here, and I have missed everyone.
But today I want to address an issue that has been bothering me for a
whole semester. I took a class at my university this semester and the one
before with the same professor.  She is a "Muslim."  Here is what I
mean by this:
She says she is a Muslim, but when she was explaining the 5 Pillars of
Islam to the class, she said that most Muslims don't pray.  Now I am
not saying she is wrong, but I pray, and I'm sure you guys pray as well,
and so do many others, and I don't think it's a good message to give to
non-Muslims that we don't pray.
Second, as soon as Ramadan set in, she made a point to tell the class
how she doesn't see the point of fasting when in America, because the
fun of the get-togethers and night life isn't here like it is in the
Middle East.  Is that why Muslims fast?
Third, when I did my presentation of Tayib Saleh's book, Season of
Migration to the North, I wanted to point out that the people in the book
were not behaving Islamically, because they were getting drunk everyday
and talking about all the people they had been with intimately, and
other things of this sort.  When I said this, my professor said that I had
only a "book" knowledge of Islam, and that if I had grown up a Muslim,
I would know that this behavior is common among Muslims.   Did I miss a
part of the Qur'an where it said that drunkeness and promiscuity were
Islamic and good?
What message is this professor sending to her students?  And why?  Why
would you want to make non-Muslims in America believe these things
about our religion?
Thanks for letting me vent...I'll be interested in your replies.
 Salaam,
   Sis Malak
P.S.  Her class next semester is called:
Terrorism:  Islam and the West.....

Assalam ualykum,

Speak up in class when she challenges Islam and Muslims! You have every right to do that, in fact you *must*, it's your *duty!*

Got an MSA? Tell them to have a meeting with her, have rebuttals read for her accusations!

**@!$#@! Oh I am so mad.

wassalam

Assalam,
Saleema is right. If you don't challenge the teacher-she's going to continue to give Muslims a bad name.
What's this??? Terrorism: Islam and the West????
What-is she gonna blame the Muslims??? Maybe she's a jew in diguise!!!!

Asalaam alaikum,
This is anonymous....actually, it's Sis Malak.  But I am the one who started this thread.  That is a good idea to go to the MSA...we do have one in my university. The problem is that it's winter break now.  I will bring it up at the Middle East Students Association, because we are still meeting over break.
Here is another problem:  there was another Muslim student in my class, and he is from Saudi Arabia, and he agreed with her when she made her comment about Ramadan.  I disagreed, however, and told my class that Ramadan isn't about fun, although it can be fun, but it is about devoting yourself to Allah and showing your commitment to Him.
I wanted to add that I wrote my final paper for this class, and our papers were copied and distributed to all of the students in the class, about the True Status of Women in Islam, and used this paper to try to show the truth instead of the strange things that she taught us in the class.  I hope that it helped.  I will keep you updated about what happens next semester.  I am auditing her class only, so I will only go in for discussion purposes with the class....inshallah I will be able to explain to this class that Muslims are peaceful, and the word Islam means peace, not terrorism.  We'll see.....
 Salaams.

Who is this teacher ???
Why is she allowed to (ok it is dawning on me) so call teach Islamic academics?
Not fast in America during Ramadan?  That is absolutely ludicous!

She has a problem and it looks like she won't be meeting the righteous in Paradise.  But alas...Allah knows best!

Ok if I were a chicken my feathers would be really ruffled!

Asalaam alaikum,
Hey Jannah....are you who I think you are???

I forgot to mention something about my teacher...my fiancee, who met her also, reminded me the other day that she told us that one of her favorite foods is PORK.
This woman, I am sure, though born a Muslim, has forgotten her roots and her faith.  No fasting, eating pork, drinking is ok.....  What Islam does she practice?  Not mine.  personally, I like the Islam that Allah (SWT) sent to us through the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), and the one that we find in the words of the Qur'an.

Peace.

Assalam ualykum,

Next time when she tries to give a bad image about Muslims and Islam, remind her that not everyone is like her. Just because she eats pork, doesn't mean that everyone else does too. Just because she doesn't pray 5 times a day, does't mean the rest of the people don't.

As for the Saudi guy, I woul tell him to go back home. I would. Yes, I know its rude, but Mr. Fob needs to go bury himself in a hole or shut-up. I wish I was in your class!

OMG! I'm so mad, I can barely type!  First, know (and let her
know)that there is nothing such as "non-practicing" muslims.  Those who
don't pray because they think they don't need to are kuffar according
to the majority of scholars.  The Prophet (sallalahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
said that what differentiates a muslim and a kafir is the prayer.

Second, next time she says that "most muslims" don't do this or that,
remind her that it's not because they don't do it that it's not
mandatory.  Tell her (and the class) that we must not judge a religion
according to its people, but according to its scriptures.  And give her some
quranic verses and hadiths to support your sayings.

It is clear to my mind that she hates islam.  She's a shaytan.  With
the msa, you could go to the director of the program and explain him/her
why this teacher is not qualified at all to teach islam.  Please do
something about it, so that Allah will be pleased with you and reward you,
incha'Allah.

P.S.: Would you mind telling us what university you go to?

Asalaam alaikum,
I go to the University of Akron.  It's in Ohio, near Cleveland, if you know where that is.

I have to say that you guys are all right, and I appreciate the responses.  I am not the perfect Muslim, I never thought that, and I know that only Allah can be perfect.  But I do follow the rules of my faith....
I don't understand how these people can call themselves Muslims....out of 4 Muslims in my class, I was the only one fasting!
I told you about my paper for this class.....I only explained part of it.  I wrote about the true status of women in Islam, and in the second half, I wrote about the way that women have actually been treated in some societies, such as the Taliban in Afghanistan, and how the people in these societies have distored Islam.  My conclusion was that Islam cannot be judged by its people, only by its text and the Hadith....just what our conclusion is about my teacher for the same class......

you know..i would make her watch those little kids movies that Sound Vision and Astrolabe does..."What is Islam?" "Adam's first trip to the masjaad!"
lol
but i would seriously consider arranging a meeting with the dean or someone who administrates the education at your university

 hey, that 's l m' [minus the 2 spaces]
is a pretty good shorthand type thingie,
 anyway, on with my post...

Your teacher, is, to quote 7 of 9, IRRELEVANT.

I was researching for my own business needs
and came across a conclusion from Imam
 Abdullah Hakim Quick.
He stated that as of the end of 1998,

"43% of the Muslim Ummah is under the age of five."

 Re-READ that again!

I remember back in 1992, After finishing off
research for my dad's book, we had concluded
that circa 1990, 50-70 % of the muslim ummah was
under the age of 25 depending on the country.
Pakistan was at 70 %. Egypt around 60 % etc etc.

 The point?

All this talk of what Islam or Muslims
'USED to do' when we were younger

 or in my country,

or partying during the nights of Ramadhan
 when I was young,

or whatever out of date snapshot of a memory
we or ANY person in a lecturing position
THINKS they have of what Muslims REALLY do is...

 OUT OF DATE.

 In 1992, I invented a term:

 The "Bismillah Baby Boom" Generation.

In this 15th Century of the Hijrah, all ahem,
BETS are off. It's a whole NEW ummah.

What Muslims DID, is out of date.

The Ummah and our behaviour in it, is up for grabs.

 Carpe Islam.

Just as the Original Baby Boom Generation
controlled the United States during the
Cold War years and continue to do so today,

As the return of the 'Old War' matures
and like the western world not knowing fully
what hit them until it was necessary to
re-adjust their economy, They won't know
what will hit them, InshAllah, until
the Bismillah Baby Boom Generation in America
Alone controls more than 271 electoral college
votes...Now I may be typing silly, but you get
 my point.

(another Term I came up with after long
reflection and conclusion that for 1200 years
until The Bolshevik revolution, Islam and the
West were in a cold war situation in fact.
With the end of the Cold War circa 1989, and
today post Gulf War, just look at Al-Quds,
Kosovo, Chechniya, etc etc sadly ETC...
This 'Old War' term I feel is correct, but this
really belongs in its own unique thread, sorry.)

That Lecturer is out of date and by the time
that teacher figures it out, it'll be Ramadhan
1441 AH, and her ENTIRE freshman class will
be fasting, wearing Hijab/Kufis, with all the brothers
sitting on one side of the class and the sisters
 on the other side.

I actually feel sorry for your teacher.
You fellow students only have to see how
you conduct yourself during and outside of
class to confirm that what your prof is teaching
in contradictory to what YOU as an AMBASSADOR
 of TODAY's Islam/Ummah actually practice.

 I sarcastically suggest your non-muslim
classmates ask for a tuition refund as what
the teacher is 'teaching' is incorrect.

 Salam.

Your Bismillah Baby Boomer Bro in T.O.,

Salaam

a few answers

1) Your Teacher is suffering from despair and has given in to shaytaan

   Or
2) She is a shaytaan of the feminist/secularist variety

   Or

3) She is a heretic eg qadiani's eat pork

   Or

4) She is a non-muslim who is infiltrating the ummah for some end in which case avoid her like the plaque

The only thing you can do is hand her some islamic leaflets, oppose the wrong she says in class ,inform her superiors and give out her details to the general muslim community say after 3 months if her behaviour hasn't changed
