Asalaam alaikum wrt wb,

Brother's I have started this thread to talk about everything NBA, although this topic deserves a forum of its own.

As you know, my team, the Los Angeles Lakers are the world champions.  All the teams in the eastern conference are pathetic, although with the recent trades that took place, Miami and Orlando look promising.  The only team I have respect for besides the Lakers are the Portland Trail Blazers, what a team they have.

Now that we are in the off season, the Lakers will need to trade and/or get rid of some players in order to defend their crown.  In my opinion all players on the Lakers can be replaced except for Shaq and Kobe.  I'd like to see the Lakers get Bryan Grant and possibly a few good outside shooters, possibly Toni Kukoch.

Any other thoughts?

Assalamu alaikum,

I'd like to see the Lakers beat the Spurs when all their players are healthy!  I have doubts about how good Shaq can be against the twin towers, especially Duncan.

Don't mention Quitten ... err ... Pippen's team to me!  The guy bailed out on the Rockets after only a shortened season, and may he lose wherever he goes!  If Portland wants any kind of success, they have to lose that idiot.  Remember the last game against the Lakers?  The second half?  Pippen disappeared completely ... just what he does best at crunch time!

I wouldn't bet on the Lakers just yet.  The Magic might be pretty good in the east.  And don't forget Indiana.  From what I hear, they have everyone coming back (although nothing is official yet).  And I think Isiah will be a great coach.

Asalaam alaikum wrt wb,

Ok, you may have a valid point Arsalan, about the Spurs.  The Lakers just need a power forward to match up with San Antonio's power forward, and then it will be fair, Shaq and someone against Robinsons and Duncan.

Quitten, as you affectionately call him, is a good player, you have to admit it.  I really think the Lakers could have swept Portland, if they had put Shaq on Rasheed Wallace early on, like they did in game 7's 4th quarter.  Then someone like Travis Knight could guard Sabonis.  As for the Pacers, they probably will get all their players back, but that won't help them.  Isiah Thomas smiles too much.  I think the only time I didn't see him smling was when Magic Johnson punched him in an NBA final.  I didn't like Thomas's commentary during the playoffs, especially after the Lakers blew out Indiana in the first game and Thomas said that Indiana would win it in 6.  I think Indiana made a big mistake.

Assalamu alaikum,

You know what, I actually think Isiah was right!  Indiana could beat the Lakers in 6.  The problem was that Larry Bird was coaching (sorry, *pretending* to coach!), not Isiah.  It'll be interesting to see if he can put into action what he sees in this Indiana ball-club.  I don't know about you, but most of the time Isiah seems to know what he's talking about!  At least much more than Bill Walton or Kenny Thomas!  Actually I would put Hubie Brown as the only other commentator besides Isiah who knows what he's talking about!

I guess it'll be interesting to see what happens with Indiana.

As far as Quitten goes, you rightfully said he's a good player...not great!  He's overrated if you ask me.  The guy always bails out at crunch time (he's done it throught his career: chicago, houston, portland), and he can NOT carry any team to success.  Phil Jackson realized this and that's why he kept on emphasizing that Portland didn't have a team leader, and thus Pippen must lead his team if they wanna win!  He knows Pippen's weak-point, and he abused it brilliantly!

One last thing: don't count out the Rockets :)  This is the last year for Olajuwon, and ... well ... I have a Dream! :)

Asalamu alaikum brothers :)

Well bhaloo..it looks like we agree on something..I myself am a diehard Lakers fan!!

i think first we need to stop and give them some credit for what they accomplished this year.  It was basically Shaq and Kobe and a bunch of scrubs/role players.  When you look at a team like Portland, they should have CRUSHED the Lakers on paper, but as Chris Berman always says, "that's why they play the game".  Portland probably had one of the only 3 or 4 centers in the league that can even contain Shaq, and they have all stars up and down their roster.  Steve Smith used to score 20+ points a game, along with Pippen and Wallace.  Stoudamire should have been abusing Ron Harper and the list goes on... I have to admit I was pretty afraid coming into that Portland series, because Portland is deep.

But having the highest payroll in the league and the most "superstarts" doesn't always work.  The Lakers(just like the Bulls when they made their runs) have only two superstars, two scores, two quality defenders.  They have a system that works.  That's all the Bulls really had when they won their six championships.  The rest of those guys were just role players. And as long as the supporting cast around Shaq and Kobe are somewhat decent, they shouldn't have a problem winning titles.

I have to admit tho, they're not doing too well this offseason, they failed to land Kukoc and B. Grant. They need a power forward big time..only because when they play Tim Duncan and Co. they need someone to match up.  They actually lost 3 of 4 to the Spurs last season, and in only two of those games Shaq, Kobe, Duncan and Robinson played, and the Lakers lost both games.  They drafted that guy from Stanford..Madsen..i heard he's supposed to be pretty tough..but we'll see..

But the offseason is still young..Phil Jackson is a coach that a lot of players would like to play for, and i've heard he's trying to get Oakley into town, which would be a perfect fit.

I think the Lakers have to be the favorites to repeat this year.  But it's going to be harder than last year.  Portland showed all the teams in the NBA how to play Shaq and the triangle offense..and I will bet you every coach in the league has a copy of the films from that series :)

well..we'll see what happens.

take care brothers :)

wasalamu alaikum,
Yasir

Assalaamu alaikum,

I wanted to express my opinion on the Magic.  They are going nowhere.  Grant Hill has talent, but cant carry a team.  McGrady has talent, but his attitude is horrible.  I don't the two will mesh well together either.  D on't expect much from Orlando this year.

Wassalaamu alaikum.

Asalaam alaikum wrt wb,

Brother Yasir, that was beautiful, beautiful man.  I feel the exact same way.  I watched every minute of the Portland series and my heart was going up and down as if it was in some roller coaster ride.  What a series.  I wanted to go so badly to the game.

I did have a chance to go to a game in the Lakers vs. Phoenix series.  I sat in the 12th row at the half court line.  It was awesome seeing the players that close up.  D ang, Shaq is a warrior, well built.  Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd looked really tiny compared to him.

The Lakers need to do some serious wheelin and deelin this offseason.

Brother Ikrima, the only reason why I think the Magic will do good is because they almost made the playoffs last year and they didn't really have anyone.  Now they got McGrady and Hill.  But I think Miami will emerge from the east.

Do you know that Mahmoud Abdul Rauf is back in the NBA? He'll be playing for the Grizzlies. I think its great that he'll be teammates with Shareef Abdur Rahim.

Now that Mourning has a kidney desease the Heat are nowhere near the favorites in the East. I think Toronto, NY and Orlando will do well in the East. I can hardly believe what happend in Indiana this summer! Reggie must be crying his eyes out! No Smits, Davis or Jackson! what did they do with that squad? well maybe they will make a run for Mutumbo but since he has a case of malaria I dont know if they will be that desperate, nor will the knicks now that Mourning is out for the season!

Well, Shaquille is worried about his own kidneys now, thats bad news for you lakers fans. But my team, the knicks, scare me a lot because Glen is out with a sore ankle (doing well in the preseason), Houston and Spree are hurting too-these guys have to find a way to stay healthy!

I found it pretty funny some of the comments Shaq made when he inked that 89 million dollar contract.. well I really do hope he has nothing to complain about since he's getting a salary that can feed a whole nation.

My prediction: Knicks will come out of the East and battle with the Trailblazers for the chance to be world champions! (insha allah)

Fatimah that was an interesting analysis, thank you.  Shaq is worried about his kidneys?  I didn't hear about that.  The NBA championship in my opinion will be decided in the western conference championship series.  The NBA finals is just a formality.

That Portland and LA series was the best series I have ever watched.  It was something else how the Lakers came back in the end.  This year Portland has designed its team to match up against the Lakers.  Arvydas Sabonis really gave the Lakers problems in that series.  What I would have done was put Shaq on Rasheed Wallace (which Phil Jackson did in the 4th quarters) and put someone like AC Green on Sabonis.  The top 3 teams in the west are the Lakers, Trailblazers, and Spurs (in my opinion).  Shaq is unstoppable and him and Kobe are just going to get better and stronger each year, insha'Allah.  Horace Grant helps the Lakers out against Portland who really went all out to get power forwards and big bodies.

I thought the Heat would do pretty good this year but since Zo is done for the season I doubt it now.  Like you, I don't think the Pacers will do well at all without Smitts and Davis.  I don't know maybe NY has a chance to emerge from the east, given how poor the competition is out there. ;)  We'll see.  :)

I'm a huge Laker fan, Rams and Raider fans (they used to play in southern California), and a Yankee fan (because I played little league baseball for the Yankees)

What is up with Olajuwon? For the past two years he hasn't been healthy and has not been playing much. At the link you provided it says that he will be out for the rest of the preseason and maybe even more! He's retiring? well at least he got his championship thats all you can dream about when you are in the NBA. But I truly wish it wasn't at the expense of the Knicks in '94. (since he has more than one ring right?)That series was just a hearbreaker-it was just so painful to see that the Knicks were SO close to winning a championship, but seeing Olajuwon standing calmly on the floor with his hands raised praying to Allah, that was a beautiful site to see. Masha Allah he is a good brother I hear he is making a masjid in Houston right now.

Kathy!! Salaams, you're a baseball fan? I don't know much about baseball.. while the rest of NY is looking forward to the subway series I'm preparing myself for the start of the NBA season!I know-that is very odd, who are you rooting for? Yanks or Mets? I don't care who wins because no matter what there is going to be a parade in NY once the series is done!! Although NY is psyched out, I'm not sure how the ratings will be in the rest of the country though!

Yeah, Shaq says he is afraid of getting tested I read about it on espn.com he blames it on the NBA's rugged schedule. As much as I don't like shaq i hope he is healthy too bad for mourning, I just hate for all these players to go down the nba is already so watered down. There is no legitimate center in the east this season! Marcus Camby (some say who is soft like cotton candy-but I like him) is playing center for NY! Portland has Erick Barkley this season, he went to my school. Because Portland is so talented I dont see him playing much!i have to study now, wasalam!

I am a fan of baseball- a left over product from college.
I am just as thrilled that both Yankees and the Mets have won. I really could not choose. My husband is rooting for the Yankees and my son for the Mets. Probably neither one will watch an entire game!
Me- I am just looking forward to some good baseball!

Assalaamu alaikum,

Regarding the Pacers, Dale Davis was the heart of that team.  Without him, even if Miller continues to play great, the Pacers wont do so well.

Olajuwon?  I understand Arsalan recently met our dear brother Hakeem.  Perhaps he has some new information he would like to share with us.  Arsalan, does Hakeem go to your masjid or what?  How well do you know him?

Assalamu alaikum,

I was close - the Lakers won by 10.

What do you guys think about the season so far?  Any surprises? Disappointments?  Predictions?  Modified predictions?? :)

My biggest surprise: Philadelphia.  I know they're good, but I didn't know they could go 8-0.  That's scary!

My biggest disappointment: Lakers.  5-3?  If they're going to be any "dynasty" or whatever, they better get back to work on the floor out there.  For a team that was hoping to win 70 games last season, and got pretty close, a 5-3 start is inexcusable.  Especially considering that they got rid of the Rice factor!

My prediction: I'm still standing by my older prediction: San Antonio.  You heard it here first!  If everyone in Spurs stays healthy, they will go all the way.  Robinson is playing his best basketball ever, Duncan is back in shape, and their back-court is much better than it has been for several years.

The East?

Doesn't matter!

Shaq just hasn't been playing well. :)  I have been impressed with the Lakers so far considering Shaq hasn't been playing well.   Horace Grant is incredible, give it some time for the Lakers to gel together.   Without Shaq the Lakers are bad, once he gets into the swing of things, look out.  Many people think Philadelphia will emerge from the east in the finals.  Things are shaping up to look that way.

Phil Jackson was dissin the Spurs saying that the season isn't a week or two, its 82 games, and that they don't have what it takes to last that long.  ;)
