Assalamu alaikum,

Jewelery and ornaments: No!
Gold & silver in general: Yes!  (as a symbol of wealth).

Let's see what the others say...

Asalaam alaikum wrt wb,

Se7en, men look at jewelry from a purely logical standpoint, we are very simple people.  Men wonder why does some rock costs hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Se7en, yes guys don't like jewelry.

Jewelry makes no practical and logical sense. And as all guys are practical and logical jewelry is an obious no-no. Consider the following disadvantages:

- Jewelry adds unnecessary weight. Guys like to be lean and mean :) Why burden oneself and reduce one's efficiency?

- Jewelry may snag. This is dangerous as one never knows when a slick and quick getaway is needed :) Moreover, jewelry can hurt. Why take the risk? Guys don't like to be stuck in a ring :)

- Jewelry may start unexpected chemical reactions :) After all most jewelry is made of elements not found in the human body. Why make one's body a chemistry laboratory?

- Jewelry is expensive. Why not spend the money on something more useful, like a couple of season tickets for the favorite sport team?

- Jewelry is just a piece of metal with no value whatsoever. And it will not remain forever. Remember the general rule of nature, that all things will be destroyed -- or lost? :) Why even bother?

Wasalaam.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Asim :)

Let me see somethin here...

Hmm.. what about those souped up cars with chrome wheels, huge sound system, spoiler, leather seats and all that?  From a purely logical standpoint, why would someone even *care* what the rims of a car look like?  Let alone spend so much money and time on them?
Jewelry is just a piece of metal with no value whatsoever. And it will not remain forever.
But the ad says diamonds are forever!

Hehhe, that's if it's bad jewelry.  Bring your sister/mother/wife, she'll hook you up.

And I have seen many Muslim guys with jewelry... usually silver chains, hemp necklaces, or those black cord thingies.  What about those guys, are they betraying the brotherhood?

I dunno what is up with those brothers, weird, werid.  Ok, about the rims for cars, its true it has no real effect on the car, other then aesthetics.  That's why I wouldn't buy something like that.  As for the interior of a car, what you mentioned are things that add to ones comfort in a vehicle and therefore it is something practical.

Assalaamu alaikum,
But the ad says diamonds are forever!
Don't fall for the marketing hype! They don't tell you the whole story.

A typical chain of ownership for a diamond looks something like this:

The Great Mining Company of South Africa, International Diamond and Gold, Amna, Mike, Alfonso (the great diamond smuggler :) ), Diamond Cellar, Sarah, Melissa, Alfonso, JC Penney, Saima, ...

Mind you, this chain is not over centuries, but usually over a few years!

The rule is: the smaller and more expensive an object is, the greater the probability that it will be lost -- or stolen -- before it is destroyed.
What about those guys, are they betraying the brotherhood?
Guys are usually not that dumb. Maybe they are misled by their wives?

:)

Wasalaam.

Assalamoalykum,

Girls are sweet, they could never mislead the guys. The guys mislead and betray them!

As'salaam Alaikum wa AlhamdiAllah.

With regard to the jewerly question, the Prophet(saw) used to wear a silver ring with the 'seal of Prophethood' on his little finger. Sometimes on the left hard or sometimes on the right hand. It is mere preference. We should stay away from what has been forbidden for us guys like Gold and Silk.

Wa Salaam.
