Was Islam spread by the sword?

Assalaamu alaikum,

I often get this question from non-Muslims, but I haven't found the all-encompassing answer:

"If Muhammad was not violent, then why did he go to different countries and fight wars?  To spread Islam with his sword, right?"

I can mention that people are becoming Muslim in US, not at the sword, and that there are some Christians in the Muslim countries.  D oes anyone have any other ideas?

Assalaamu alaikum,

Ikrima.

Assalamu alaikum,

"He (Allah) is the one who has sent His Messenger with the Guidance and the True Deen so that it may overcome all other ways of life ..." (Surah al-Fath).

I was listening to a khutbah by Dr. Israr Ahmed (founder and ameer of Tanzeem-e-Islami in Pakistan, an off-shoot of Jamaat-e-Islami) just a couple of days ago on this topic.

It is wrong to say that Islam spread by force on earth.  It is also wrong, however, to say that the only concept of fighting (jihaad) in Islam is for defensive measures.

The religion of Allah must prevail over all other religions and ways of life.  Truth and falsehood cannot coexist, and the saviours of Truth (Muslims) must strive to make the word of Allah supreme in all corners of the Earth.  If, to do this, Muslims have the means and the power, then they must use it (unless, of course, opportunity exists for them to go and preach their system of life in another land - but what are the chances of that???).  If they don't have the power and the upper hand, then they must wait for the time to come.

However, note that oppression and force is never exerted against individuals.  "There is no compulsion in religion..."  However, the law of the land MUST be in accordance with the Divine Will.  And Divine Justice must be established everywhere possible.

Historically, this has only proven to be more benefitting to humanity, including non Muslims, because the Justice of an Islamic government is incomparably better than any other one.

Once the Divine Law has become supreme, the non Muslims reserve the right to live as minorities, with full legal protection, within the system (as long as they pay jizyah).  Other alternatives are to leave and go somewhere else, without being harmed, or become Muslims of course.  The choice is theirs.

Wassalam.

Arsalan, good article, but what in the theoretical case that a weaker country that fears war with the Muslims says-send all the preachers you want, set up all the Masjids you likeetc.etc.-we just want to be the ones in control.Would this negate the basis for jihad(assuming they carry through on their word?)This was the only fuzzy area that I could find in your arguements.Islam is bigger than sovereignty, but the line blurs for me here.
