London, Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Ann Summers Ltd., the U.K.'s closely held chain of lingerie and sex-toy shops, gained permission to open 22 shops in the Middle East, including one in the holy city of Mecca, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

Permission was obtained through Kuwait-based Makae/Top Ten International, the paper said. The shops, which are also planned for Dubai, Bahrain and Egypt, plan to sell lingerie and leather goods, and potentially massage oils and chocolate body-paints, although not sex toys, the paper said.

Noshaba Hussein, a member of the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain, will lobby the U.K. Foreign Office and the Saudi Arabian ambassador to prevent the shops from opening, the paper said. ``When Muslims go to the holy city they should only be indulging in prayer,'' she was quoted as saying.

Makae Chairman Mohamed Ayed Alenezi was quoted saying ``Nice and sexy lingerie is not against Islam.''

What are the Saudis playing at?!!

I spoke to a sister and she said there was nothing wrong in this as women resident in Mecca can wear lingerie, theres other shops there that sell these itmes and doesn't go against Islamic customs. Any truth to that?

Yes, its halal for a women to wear lingerie for her husband. The comment that people should go to Mecca only to pray is irrelevant. So Meccans should be denied access to lingerie? If its only between the wife and husband, why should anyone complain(with halal methods of advertising)about it? After all, Meccans (gasp!)have sex too.Though if a million of these shops sprang up you would begin to wonder about the apparent over emphasis on sex.
