Asalamu'alaikum, Finger-licking good by Angela Saurine Food giant KFC is adapting to local needs by using halal chicken. The Bankstown South store has had an overwhelming response sincce it began using halal chicken about four months ago. "I get customers coming as far away as Arncliffe, Campbelltown, Fairfield and Parramatta and there are Muslim communities from Wyong and Wollongong that organise a bus trip to get a taste of KFC," said restaurant manager Chahine Chahine, who suggested using halal chicken because of the area's high Muslim population. "Muslim people are very disciplined in their beliefs. There's a very big market in this community because there's a large population of Muslim people who didn't eat KFC before." The KFC stores at Punchbowl and Campsie have also started using halal chicken and other KFC stores are looking into it. Chahine said it may not be feasible for many stores because of the many sacrifices that have to be made to be certified by the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils -- such as taking bacon off the menu. "The premises had to be free of pork products," Chahine said. "The Revesby KFC is only five kilometers away and they sell tonnes of bacon burgers there but we only sold about two a day here. They also checked that we cook in vegetable oil and that the chicken is supplied by an accredited halal company." Halal is a method of slaughtering meat. Isn't that great news? I'm in a youth citizen ship program and there are a few of us muslim girls in it, and we've suggested to have a halal macDonald's here in Melbourne, it's just an idea, but inshaillah oneday soon, they will open one. For u guys that live in a muslim country don't take for granted all the halal food, here we even gotta check ice-cream and candy wrappers to make sure there's no gelatin or whatever. Wasalamuaykum, Amatullah |

as salaamu alaikum, hmmm... well not always pig, but animals in general... beef geletain is pretty common too... the onlything is that the food industry here is all about money, so manufacturers use it from justy about any animal source, whichever is cheapest; therefore the source is frequently from pigs, but there is no way of knowing this so therefore anything contiangin geletain must be avoided. and btw, i have a book about geletain/kosher/halal food stuff and it explains the entire matter with great detail... if i find it i'll post the title and author of it here. |
