Am i right?

assalaamu alaikum

I would like the opinion of my distinguished brothers and sisters about a particular method i employ to verify how safe it is to accept what i read or hear from a person who is unfamiliar to me. As we'd all agree, we don't take Islam from just anyone - you want to establish first that the person doesn't have some weird understanding of Islam.

When i see something which catches my eye, i often try to establish what are his other publications, which organisations does he belong to, which boards is he a member of, etc.

One of the most important questions i ask is "whose payroll is he on?"

Part of this is to try to determine whether there may be factors that may heavily influence what the person is saying.

To what extent do you think i'm correct? And what flaws are there in what i'm doing?

Let me give you an example. Yesterday i read a column on the internet by a brother on a popular muslim site in which he was pushing the idea of the Abrahamic Vision - that Jews, Muslims & Christians are essentially of the same Abrahamic religion. On further investigation i found out that this brother works for a centre of Christian-Muslim understanding whose head is an advisor to the US government, thus, obviously funded by the kuffaar.

What do you think?

Asalaam alaikum wrt wb,

Kashif, it didn't take me long to figure out what article you are referring to.  Its an article by a M. Khan, right?  I didn't like some of his articles in the past.

Yes Kashif, you are absolutely correct in having a criteria for judging to accept what others have to say. Too often I have come across certain brothers/sisters who claim to have complete reference in the Qur'an and the Sunnah to what they advocate. Yet they are the very ones who have been paid by the non Muslim paymasters to create fithna amongst the Muslims. Today everyone claims to be following the Qura'an and the Sunnah, and everyone claims to be from the Ahlus sunnah wal jama'ah, and everybody accuses everyone else of hypocrisy! We truly are living in very interesting and strange time.

Like yourself I have the following criteria.

1. Which organisation is he a member of?
2. Which other organisations is he affiliated with?
3. Whose payroll is he on?
4. Does he himself practice upon what he preaches?
5. What opinion do other reputable scholars hold of him?
6. Under whose guidence did he receive his scholarship in Islam? (if he claims to be an Islamic scholar)
7. What other lectures/articles/books/publications has he done?

Obviously the information for the above is not always evident, but I just try my best to ascertain whatever is possible.

Wassalaam.
