I also know a little of French, and a teeny tiny bit of Spanish.

You know, I'm starting to get this feeling that people are starting to find out more about us than we ought to tell... conspiracy theories anyone?

Oh well, i guess i'll just go with the flow!  I speak urdu and english fluently, i can speak arabic but not as fluently as I would like to, and a teeny, tiny bit of Pushto.

Assalamoalykum,

Hey, we got a pakhtun on board? So am I. I understand phusto here and there and speak a couple of sentences. Speak English fluently. Currently taking Arabic classes. From French, I remember Bonjur and cio.
In spanish I know estupido and Kiata laboka.
I can speak and write urdu very well. I can understand Hindko and Punjabi but when I speak them people fall to the ground laughin because they say my accent is so bad. And i guess that's about it.

Asslam Alaikum,
I am on the same boat as you Saleema when it comes to French. In secondary school, I was forced to take two years of it, but I cannot remember anything other that "je m'apelle maryam"(or however it is spelt).
I speak Hausa fluently. I understand most "angry" words in Kanuri, my Mum's language (she doesn't seem to remember any other language when she is angry), and like to believe that I know some Arabic (three sentences to be precise) Overall, I think someone needs to take pity upon my soul and teach me any language.

I speak Arabic(mother tongue)and English and some French, when I visite Turkey I tried to learn a few phrases in Turkish(oh I loved that country,it had such rich islamic history,it kills to see what happened to it now!!).
I tried to teach myself spanish(it so easy,if you know english and french)and I really did learn some grammar and some sentences, but then I realised that at this age(of mine) I should put more time in Quran and in doing something more fruitful for islam,so I ended up leaving the spanish and enrolling in tajweed and alhamdulillah that was the best decision i've made.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Well, I'm really bad at languages. Let's see...besides English I know:
- Urdu (speak, read, and little write)
- Punjabi (understand and maybe speak a little)

What else...
- Hausa (used to understand very well, but have no contact for 14 years now)
- French (studied in school, but don't remember much)
- Spanish (If Sesame Street's Spanish counts :) OK I am pushing it :) )

I would like to learn Arabic though, formally and thoroughly, InshaAllah.

Latest news from there is that Attock juts got ISPs for the first time about a month ago... And it seem like we had Internet access since the beginning of time?

I'm comfortable wiht English, Hindi and Urdu. I can also understand Arabic to a great extent and can also somewhat speak (in the local dialect). I've always wondered how people pick up languages like French and Spanish so easily. Are they really that easy to learn? I've got quite a few south Indian colleagues and from listening to them speak I think Malayalam is a very difficult language.

I hope everyone is well. Sr. Ki, Hausa is a language that is spoken accross a few countries in sub-saharan West Africa. In  Nigeria, it is spoken in the predominantly muslim north, and it is considered one of the three major languages in the country, along side Igbo and Yoruba. Sorry for not clearing that up.....

Assalamoalykum,

Hello, Chahi, what's a khel? I'm not sure what tribe I am from, but I think my tribe's name is the Mushwani clan. Got some relatives we haven't seen in centuries in Afghanitstan too.

So I only remember one word from french then? I thought chaow, cio, or however it is spelled is an informal word for saying Hi.

We are from aptabad, proudtobemuslim. well, actually not really. but most people have heard of aptabad and so I usually tell them that I'm from there. I am from shinkiari, near mansehara, which is near aptabad. My mommy is from Lahore but she is pakhtun too but doesn't know any pushto, she just understands some of it.

Both my parents speak Hinku and two of my siblings who are younger than me. The rest of us mainly speak English and urdu.

sheesh ...with one stroke you've dismissed 6,000 years of history..lol...man the ancestors must really be thinking what did we do wrong ...*s*
you can find the family tree of all the pathans online though it's more a tribal tree because the family tree would be too large
hey did you know the yusufzai were originally called the ysws? and that they used to fought against the hindu's in the time of the baghawad geeta? (circa 2,500 bc) ...!
apparently the pathans became muslims after the
chief married somebody who was related to the sahabi khalid bin walid..so warriors on both sides of the family!

As Salamu Alaikum,

Let's see now, what other languages do I know?

Punjabi (mother tongue)- I speak it.

Urdu - I can speak, read and write it.

French - I can speak, read and write a little...I'm slightly out of practice with the writing, but my understanding of the language is good.

Arabic - I can read it and I am learning to speak it...

Spanish - hmmm I only know a few words adios/gracius - senyoras/senyorita/amigo...

Italian - well mici ama... - my friend said it means my name is..also arriverderci....Does that count?

I love learning languages and find it easy to pick up new phrases...

Ok, Ok.. I'll join the band wagon :)

I can speak Malay - my mother toungue (and alhamdulillah, it's improving a lot better coz, most of my clients speak it)... I can understand proper Indonesian, coz, it's pretty much the same language... it's just some conotations of some words and expressions are different. But if one is to speak with a thick Indonesian accent, the only thing that's written on my face is "confusion".

Plus...
A cup of Mandarin, a dash of Arabic, a sprinkle of French and a few drops of Japanese, Cambodian, Tamil, Urdu and Javanese(my ancestral tongue)... oh yes, and an quark of Swedish.

All in all... my tip is... learn how to say, "I don't understand" in all languages, and you'll be fine ;)

oh yes... plus, "I love you" ;)
hmmm... maybe, "we come in peace" would be a better one.

Wassalam :-)

I also picked up some hindi words like matlab, beti, mohabat, ajnabe etc..actually they're orginally arabic so they don't really count :)

I just discovered something interesting though...the word 'gari' in hindi appears in somali vocabulary with the same meaning (car). As far as i know it doesn't have any arabic roots that i'm aware of..Now how in the world did it get there???

An even stranger occurance in somali is the word 'labis',for pencil, which is pronounced as 'labith' in spanish.

hmm, i thought i answered this q before, when i had my other user name LONG ago, hehe

but anywho, umm i speak english, *obviously* and Arabic- been learning arabic since i was in 3rd grade and had been taught the way they teach in saudi, used their books, been taught grammar, reading, writing, poems, etc etc etc! alhamdulillah, at first i hated learning it because i'm not originally arab, but now i'm very thankful i learned it, makes understanding islam SOOO much easier, i recommend anyone who doesn't know arabic to learn it, most colleges/universities and even some high schools here teach it, so just do it!

and...errr, i can speak urdu (really badly though) and VERY little of punjabi, i used to know urdu and punjabi when i was much younger when i had to talk to my khalas and cousins and phu phu's and cha cha's who didn't know english in urdu/punjabi..my parents speak to me in punjabi and urdu and i just respond in english, inshaAllah i'm going to go learn it all over again :) but i'm not THAT bad ;) really, i'm not! hehehehe

okee dokee, and oh, i really want to learn German, i think i should, since i waived out of my three yr requirment for my language (arabic) :) that should be nice!

all rightey, take care all and mashaAllah, it's really nice to see the different langauges spoken here from the Jannah Citizens...

and betul- i actually know some turkish, actually my turkish friend is over right now! but yeah, i know Abla, Taiza, Abbi, Amja (?) and i know that REALLY good food called barek...hehehe!!

okee, enough babbling! Salaams

PUNJABI BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hajree honey, i know EXACTLY what it's like to speak Urdu badly. You can see your cousins' barely supressed smirks as you struggle to figure out how many "hay"s to put after each sentence.

I also picked up some hindi words like matlab, beti, mohabat, ajnabe etc..actually they're orginally arabic so they don't really count :)
[/quote]

Some of those words are urdu as far as I know.  The hindi spoken today is a mix of urdu words mostly and hindi language structure.  So really, people don't speak true hindi if they speak modern hindi, which is called shudh hindi.  Islam's influence on hindi actually formed urdu as we know it, and even modern hindi as we know it.

And as well, yes there are many words that are the same in a very scary way... its odd how language travels, like "ananas" being pineapple in French and hindi, chemise and kameez in French and urdu...

Actually, hindi itself came from Sanskrit, and I believe, anthropologically, that arabic as well came from Sanskrit.  They say Sanskrit is the "mother of all tongues" and that MOST languages have derived from it (save aboriginal dialects in some countries). aslaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

I can also speak a little Spanish, and a few Korean words/phrases.
