Please share with us some of the positive and negative (if any) things that have happened when you have prayed in public areas.

I was once in a shopping center out in the middle of nowhere (Death valley, California) and it must have been about 103 (or more) degrees.  I was praying out in the open there, and some guy and his children were standing behind me just observing me.  They stood there for a while (I could tell because their shadow appeared right in front of me).  Heheheheh, maybe it freaked them out?  But anyways when I went in the shopping center I immediately saw 2 Muslims (a husband and a wife (wearing hijab)).  I didn't expect to see any Muslims there as this place was in the middle of no where.  But alhumdullilah it was nice to see.  Something similar to this happened to me on 2 other occasions.  One of those times I was in a park and when I finished my prayer I saw a sister (in hijab) riding a razor.

Not to show off, but I think my experience may be of benefit to others ...

Whenever necessary i.e. if I know I won't get home in time to pray, I pray in public, but try to find a quiet place.  I have prayed in many places including parking lots, parks, office hallways, airport gates, sitting on an aeroplane, hospital waiting rooms, even dressing rooms in department stores (nice and private!).

Seriously, Salat is mandatory, there is no excuse for missing it.  One should always be prepared, for example by  knowing the salat times in advance, by arranging your day's activity with salat times in mind, by puttting on socks after wudu (to avoid having to wash feet in public bathrooms), etc.  Praying in a public place is no big deal when the alternative is missing a salat, which is a MAJOR sin.  There is no acceptable excuse for missing salat.  On a journey, you can shorten your prayers.  In cases of difficulty, it is even permitted to combine zuhr and asr or maghrib and isha, even when NOT on a journey (daleel is in Sahih Muslim).

The only problem I ever had was when I was praying in the grass outside the mall, and after I had finished the security guard told me I could not pray there as it was private property.  I wanted to complain to the mall management, but my wife told to me to cool it.

On a lighter note, I was once going into sajda in an office hallway, when someone passes me by and asked 'Are you alright?'.  Of course I did not answer him, so I don't know what he thought I was doing!

At the risk of igniting a UK v US slang war, what on Earth is "riding a razor"?

You guys don't know what a razor is? ???  Its one of the most popular things in the US right now.  Its basically a metal skateboard with a long handle in the front that goes up to the waste.  Those things are all over the place, at least in California and I think I saw them nationally in the news.

Ohhh! you mean scooter. Well, we don't see them in this part of the U.S. I have seen maybe one or two electric scooters but I don't recall seeing a manual "razor" scooter (on tv yes). Is razor a brand name or just the name for this type of scooter/skateboard?

Funny how people start a subject and they end up talking about something else,I thought i was the only one with this habit, and my husband always laughed at me for drifting to other subjects.
Anyway back to the scooters, guess what,we have them here in Saudia too,I saw the kids use them in the malls and I was wondering how cute, they're foldable, back in my youth they were bulky and unfoldable.
Back to subject no. one,
I used to pray in public when I was in California(23)years ago,in Seaworld,I had to go to the baby's changing area to pray, also in a park near Oregon.
Also five years ago in Florida,my daughters and I had to pray while we were in Disneyland,we had to go to a secluded area behind a low building to pray asr,I even had to ask a Mexican old man for the direction of the East(it was cloudy and rainy as usual),people looked but then just passed by.

Sister Widad we've prayed in the same places. I prayed at Disneyland and at Sea World.  In both places I prayed in the parking lot.  At Sea World after I finished praying and was putting away my prayer rug I saw this Muslim family walking towards the park entrance.  And there weren't even any other Muslims I noticed in the park, just these people I saw after I finished my prayers.

At Disneyland at the diaper changing station you said you prayed?  Did they have some special area?  Because I just made use of the parking lot again.

bro arshad, you make me laugh :D
are the muslims that rare wherever you go? :D

everytime you have prayed somewhere u say u have seen a muslim( 1 muslim min 2 max)sorry :)

here they r everywhere, the younger ones don't give the salaam much

some of the older women r soo rude...you give the salaam and they either ignore u ,give you a dirty look or they give it with no smlie and a very puzzled look...but there r some nice one

i have never prayed in public. i hate shopping even more now, no point missing my salah for shopping, even if u do plan your time, there is always someone with u that will mess it up.
i prefer praying in the comforts of my home...
my prayer is most concentrated at home, other places  i feel i have no prayed properly...

i have prayed in my aunts garden before though
(i wouldn't call it public)-
i thought nobady was home so i went to the garden.
but afterwards it turned out that my uncle was sleep inside(i was knocking on the door for over 30mins  then it became maqrib so i went around the back. :)
and then after my aunt happen to come and found me outside.
(even though there was a masjid down the road -which is only catering for men and children at the mo.)

you shouldn't pray towards restrooms or graves or in any dirty type place or in front of a place where many people walk/drive through.

diaper area's are usually in nice lounge type places in ladies rooms so i wouldn't consider them the bathroom either i think

see what an education you brothers are getting :)

Ok, my first time in the Brothers hang out joint, thought sisters were not allowed so did not wanna venture onto forbidden ground :

Only public place i can "remember" praying in is parks, as usually would spend a lot of time there with family and friends etc, so time to pray comes along and well i gotta pray ... no bad experiences alhumdulillah, just ppl looking on ...

One thing i hate though, is that when on an islamic outing and it's time to pray, i HATE it when some sisters pretend to be praying when they are actually unclean ... i mean there is nothing wrong in standing to the side and not praying if you are unable to, just really annoyz me ...

i have experienced a bit of verbal abuse and also visual abuse simply 'cause i wear hijab, but i guess u got small minded people and it happens all around the world right? in general, would u say the female muslims get more abuse from the public than the brothers? cause that is what i would assume, or do you brothers get it also?

As for the scooters, we have them in Australia too, but they can actually be quite dangerous if given to kidz who are just too young to be able to handle them

assalmu alaykum,
sisters praying when they're "unclean"???  I've never heard of such a thing, that is abosuletely crazy.  Not only is that completely wrong, how is the salaah even accepted?

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

Well if you're a guy and you do follow Islamic code of dress and appearance (beard + no clothes below the ankle) you're likely to get your share of stares.  But still i think sisters get more insulting stares than the guys do in non-muslim countries.

I think the unclean women are praying just so that they can "blend" in with the rest.  Incorrect, nonetheless

The problem is that most guys don't realize that sisters cannot pray at certain times of the month or it just doesn't occur to them. So they look at them oddly or i've even heard of one case where an older brother started yelling at them asking them why they didn't pray! and sisters feel embarassed so that's why the probably do that.

But what they should do is just go in the back and sit. Since the bro's are up front they won't notice and if they do... it's time they learned eh !
