In His Old Age Did I come into this world Just to say some things and to do others, to sing, to be joyful, and enjoy wealth? In this miserable way I have lived my life, Being enslaved by wife and family. What have I gained and what is there left for my empty hands Except to count on my fingers My innumerable sins... I am sold to envy And dominated by greed; I am the target of events And the prey of want. Alas, the glory of youth! Alas, the beauty of life, The handsome face And its bygone charms. Where are all those treasure? Where are all those lovers? Where is all that strength? And where those happy moments? Now my hair is turned white as milk And my heart has turned black as tar; Now my face is bluish and gloomy and my body as curved as a horseshoe, Now I am trembling night and day from the fear of death Like a crying baby confined in his cradle. -------By Kisa'i of Merv.
