*what* did you just call me?

What would your reaction be if a Muslim brother referred to you as "babe", "honey", etc?

that would be my reaction "what??", sometimes Americans have this habit and i usually just say "please don't call me that" and they get it. it's sexual harassment if someone uses those terms in the workplace, and if a brother uses them it's plain lacking any respect for sisters

I think that shows a total lack of respect to the sister to refer to her as babe or honey.  But this type of behavior seems to be very common among Americans.  Its very digusting to seem them degrade women like this.

Alhumdullilah that's great to hear brother Moe.
What happened to the news items that you used to post everyday?  ???   I thought those were pretty interesting even though I didn't always comment.  Kashif stopped posting there as well, he used to post some interesting pieces there daily.

Alhamdulillah I've never been called "babe" or any other similar thing, but recently a friend of mine was introduced to a guy and was getting to know him as a possible husband, and in their phone conversations he used to switch from calling her "babe" to calling her "sister"!!  Needless to say she didn't marry him!

The other day my 6 year old son and I were in a fish store. He was in the next isle and I wanted to show him an exotic salt water fish. I called out to him. " Honey, come over here." Imagine my embarrassment when a male woker came!
Needless to say- I am dropping " Honey" from my vocabulary when out in public!

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Hahhahahhahaha kathy :)

At school when my friend and I were talking about her younger brother I said, "He is *so* cute!"  And the three guys in front of us turned around.

Yep, that was embarassing.

And this happened to me too, this bro was holding a baby and I said (to the baby!), "you are such a cutie", and the brother goes "thanks."

sheesh kabobs, I always manage to get myself into trouble.

Assalamoalykum,

Hahahhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh....

Se7en--that's just hilarious
and Kathy

You want to hear my embarrassing moments? Well, I was walking down the stairs once in school and this guy in front of me was running down them, apparently he was in a hurry and fell. He got up, face red, and looked around him and heaved a sigh of relief that no one saw him. But he didn't look up, I burst out laughing and the poor guy turned more red and... i tumbled down the stairs.

Then another time i swallowed the cap of a pen sitting in class. I was choking and ppl got scared. The teacher screamed to get water and when I got to the fountain, I was ok. My teacher gave me a lecture on how "stupid" it was of me to chew my pen and how "disgusting" and yes very dangerous.

ahahahhahahahah *lol* Saleema!!!  That was soo funny :)  How did you swallow a pen cap ???

I fell UP the stairs at school once, don't even ask me how I did that.

And I slammed into a wall when a bro said salaam to me, he was like "I'll just pretend I didn't see that."

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

This is AKHWAT cafe.  Thank you.

Sorry, Let's take a lesson from the brothers and discuss something much more serious:  basketball.  "oh man, did you catch Pippen in the second half of that game?  And woah, Johnson in the the 4th quarter of the 6th game!  You should have seen the way he guarded that shot, he's a great defender.."

You guys are too funny. I'm sitting here in my computer lab at school tryin not to bust out laughin and embarass myself! Speaking of embarassing moments, I once was in highschool (all girls) and I needed a "femine item" from one of those machines. The bathromm had no door but it had a hallway where the toilets were but the vending machine was near the front enterance where anybody could see. so i put my dime in but the machine would not give me a product! So i was there banging on the machine trying to get either my dime back or someting and this guy walks by, paused, smirked at me and said "need some help there?" I was so embarrased I turned about as red I could considering my complextion!!!!

PS  I have no idea how I managed to swollow the cap of a pen! I was just chewing on it! However, I did manage to digest it. Apparently my digestive system must be very acidic!

I find that totally un-professional behaviour!

SOmetimes I think it depends on where the person saying it is coming from.  I had a co-worker on one project who was from Texas and he always called me darlin'.  It bothered another woman I worked with, but it seemed fine to me.  I mean - he called *all* the men buddy and *all* the women darlin'.  It was his way of being friendly.  Now if he started calling me sugarcakes or something it'd be a completely different situation :D

AWW,

Really dear, well up north everyone calls each other Lovie, at the markets lovie it's 'how much is this lovie' or 'how much are those ta matoes lovie'. Just being friendly thats all.

Some guys/gals at work can't say me name properly(Hanif) especially when I talk with my beautiful Yorkshire accent,
so what do they call me, Honey.

Salaams.

Yeah, i agree. It depends on whats acceptable in the society. In one part of London, the market traders even call other men 'Darling.'

And i'm sure some of you know, that when you go Pakistan, the men do have a kind of tendency to walk down the street hand in hand.

I don't know about you guys, but I would feel a little weird if people started using those terms with me (i.e. darling, honey, baby, etc).  Can you guys imagine Bro. Hanif calling me Lovie or Honey?  I can't. ;)

Out here I just call people "dude" .

Me too, I'd feel a bit weird as well if a bro called me honey, what would be even more uncomfortable is when you and Bro Kashif,

would do the above and call each other honey and lovie, that would freak me out on a score of 11 out of 10. ;).

Salaams sweeties,
Bro. Hanif, you'd be surprised at how many times the holding hands in Pakistan conversation comes up.
They also do it here. But they're Bangladeshis or Indian nationals. Since they are foreigners working here, I thought it must be a buddy system thing. Or... is it?

I've seen some Arab men do it when I was in England, though. Never seen them do it here.
What would your reaction be if a Muslim brother referred to you as "babe", "honey", etc?
My face would change in an instant (hmm, a reflex action?). And I'd tell them not to call me that politely. Same thing goes if they call me by my first name. I only allow brothers to call me by my second name.

But if its old English men, bus drivers and shopkeepers, well, I'll let them off. :) They say that to everyone - Love, lovie, pet, dear.
"That'll be 90p, luv!", "He's at work, pet.", "Yes, lovie?"

And there are some brothers whom I know who call each other babe! but I think it's a mispronunciated spin off from haBIBi.
"How r U, Bib (pronouced as babe)?!" , "Hey, what's up, Bib?!"

Holding hands, babe, men.... Weird. :P

Wasalam :-)

Maybe those how do not use the person's real name are scared that they might slip and call them the wrong name....

If holding hands is suspect, I wonder what is thought about guys kissing guys -as Arab men do when they greet each other?
