Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

Dear brothers and sisters,

I have just got a job as a teacher for the junior classes in MashaAllah what seems to be the closest to an Islamic school that I have seen. I am very happy and grateful to Allah for this.

But being a new teacher is very difficult especially because neither have I taught before nor have I worked before. And handling junior classes is pretty tiring as I realised today.

I want to be a good teacher, by the will of Allah. I am just wondering if anyone would be able to give me a few tips especially on manging and keeping a restless bunch of kids quiet and interested in the class.
JazakAllah khairun

P.S. Please remember me in your prayers

walaikum salaam wrt,

ki the most important tip i would give you is to keep the class very disciplined i mean there is a teacher saying 'don't smile till october' it's true...the kids totally just take advantage of you if they know you won't do anything to them... so stay strict, if you say you're going to do something DO IT. you don't follow through once and it's over!!

develop a system that you will use throughout the year like the names on the board or 3 strikes and you're out

as for class material and all that, kids today are very interactive, you can find alot of good books, videos tapes etc that are good to bring into class, kids love islamic jeopardy and working on things in groups like posters or mini-books.

and seriously take advantage of the wealth of experience that is probably in the teachers of that school already.. they know the population really well and can give you much better tips too! and may Allah bless you, teaching our children is one of the noblest jobs... the most frustrating surely....but the most rewarding inshallah :)

Assalamu alaikum,

Don't be fooled by their innocent looks.  Some kids can win oscars for their acts!!  Do your job and don't let the alligator tears come in your way.

I'm speaking from experience here :)

Wassalam.

Ok, I used to tutor SAT Math classes to high school students and teach Algebra to junior high kids part time during college.

Let me tell you something, junior high kids are totally out of control, I had my hands full, so rude and crazy, I couldn't control the class.  Alls they wanted to do was recess and wanted me to give them candy every day in class. :(

The high school students were cool, they showed me a lot of respect and were interested in learning as much as possible about college.  They were a lot of fun to work with and easy going.

Arsalan and Jannah I'm sure you guys have some bad experiences to share.  How about the other teachers out there?

I have a relative who is a first grade teacher, every year he gets a bunch(30)of new kids and it takes hima month or so to get to know them,he goes to school armed with candies. He is very strict, but has a way with kids.He usually chooses the best ones and makes groups with one of each of the good students in charge, but he tells the whole group that if they fail in the work he gives them they will all be punished or deprived of a special treat,so they all work hard(the leader working the hardest)so as not to fall back behind the rest of the class.
He has his own colors and pencils ready(in case someone forgot his own).
He also gives them time to have fun!!He will close the classroom door and let them have some games or do faces or something of the sort.
But when it's time for work, nobody is allowed to talk.
*I hope his helps!
youve been so sweet

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu

JazakAllah khair ot all your tips brothers and sisters.

Just finished my first week as a teacher. Alhamdulillah, it seems to be a great job but i have so much to learn about being a good teacher especially the punishment bit. I just cant seem to so far be able to punish kids.

InshaAllah I have to learn that bit soon and also not to smile so much. I guess thats why the kids think me to be the kind who would not do anything.

Please pray for me. I really want to be a good teacher.

JazakAllah again

Assalamoalykum,

Man, have I had some bad experiences with kids!!

I tried to be strict with a kid in my class but I couldn't keep a straight face, and burst out laughing at his jokes.

By the way this is weekend Islamic school.
Little kids are so...
never mind but I respect my teachers a lot now and feel really bad for all the hard times I gave them, teaching is such a hard job, especailly to little kids.

One kid in my class just couldn't grap the idea of good intentions vs. bad intentions. I thought I would go crazy!!

I will stick to substituting only now.

Wassalam
