I just received this via email. I can't believe this kind of thing occurs in our communities :( ==================================== Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah Since we've discussed both the importance of Muslims participating in protests/demonstrations to make known our presence and show our concern, as well the issue of domestic violence, I thought it was appropriate that I post this to this list: Last month, a young woman by the name of Shahpara Sayeed was killed by her husband, Muhammad ______. He didn't just shoot her or kill her in some manner that we are all too used to hearing: the man set her on fire as she sat in his taxi cab, and watched her burn to death. He watched her as she screamed for help, and so did the people surrounding the scene (this happened at 2 o'clock in the afternoon...)The papers said that Muhammad's beard was singed from the heat of the fire... I drove by the site of her murder today, which is in a heavily Muslim-populated area (Elmdale and Glenwood, near Loyola Univ/Masjid-Nur). People have set up a small memorial of sorts at the streets' crossing. There are flowers and candles. There's also a large sign at the site. One side is printed in urdu and the other in english. It's announcing a walk that's going to take place this Sunday, September 17, 2000. On the sign are listed the names of 5-6 women who have been victims of domestic violence in the last two months. Shahpara's name is on the top of the list. The walk will last from 12 noon till 2pm. Starting point at 12noon: Women and Children First Bookstore, 5233 N. Clark 1pm: Will reach the corner of Foster and Sheridan Roads. The walk will end at 2pm at the site of Shahpara's murder: the Northeast corner of Elmdale and Glenwood Avenues. The walk is being organized by Apna Ghar, an Indian battered women's shelter. Their contact : 773-334-HOME It'd be good if we could show a Muslim presence. I don't know how big the walk's going to be, since this is the only thing I've seen announcing it, but I don't think that should really matter. Please make du'a for her and her family (I don't know if they had kids). And for all the women (and children) who suffer through such treatment... Chicago people: maybe you can post to your other lists. |

Assalamoalykum, Yes, it is pretty sad. I read about it in the newspaper. They were on their way to counseling. Can you believe that they showed the pic of her burned face and neck?!? It was horrible. It was very graphic!! May Allah grant her Jannah and give sabr to her family. I couldn't finish my food after seeing the picture. These ppl don't know anything about journalism ethics! Never buying their paper agian. I couldn't finish my food. Wassalam, Saleema |
