Words and phrases

Asalaamu Aleikoum,

I have two specific queries, relating to words and phrases used.

First, in lectures and books I always hear of "Orientalists".  Clearly, from the things I have heard attributed to them (which I am assuming are true) they are rogues and villains of the basest kind.  But, given that they also appear to be Europeans or Americans, why are they called "Orientalists"?

Secondly, frequently on posts on this board I see the word "lol".  What does it mean?  Is it an anagram, an Arabic word?

Any light shed on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Jazaka' Allahum khairun.

Assalamu alaikum,

I thaught that orientalists were kind good fellows.

From what I gather, they are scholars from European origins that have devoted most of their studies to the history, culture of Muslims in what is now known as the middle east, and maybe Andalucia as well.  They are called orientalists because they study the orient (an archaic word for east) i.e. from their perspective, eastern areas.

LOL is e-mail jargon for 'laughing out loud' or 'lots of laughter'.  It took me a long time to figure this one too :-)

Aha!

Thanks very much!!  LOL indeed.

Still confused on the Orientalists bit, I thought as much myself about the "studying the Orient" bit but thought it was a pretty daft name to give a group of people, but there you go.

the thing is haaris, these orientalists are not Muslims but they write books about Islam, lecture about Islam to Muslims and Non-Muslims and sometimes their views are not accurate to what Muslims believe and of course it can never be 100% because they are not muslim

many people dislike orientalists because they show islam in a certain way to the west, sort of like studying this bug under a microscope and making comments on it, looking for ways to dis-arm or kill it...

Assalamoalykum,

Orientalists can be good ppl or bad ppl. In today
's age I don't know of any good orientalists. But a lot of the misinformation about Islam in the West has been spread by them and of course some misinformation has been spread about Islam throught the Muslims also.

Sometimes Orientalists on purpose attack Islam and other Orientalists criticize it not understanding the wisdom behind some of the things.

Two good Orientalists from the recent past are Bernard Shaw who has praised Islam over and over again in his books. He wrote that if any religion in the world will be able to convert the westerners, it will be Islam and that in a few centuries Islam will spread like a wild fire in the western world.

The other guy's name I can't remember. But he gave a series of lectures on Prophet Muhammed (SAW), under the title, "Heoes and Hero Worship." His audience were Anglican Christians!! He praised Prophet Muhammed (SAW) so much in his lectures, that a person can't believe it came from a non-Muslims. He brought the spotlight on one person who wrote a lot of lies agins His Messenger.

The meaning of this aya did not go to my heart as deeply as it did after reading the things written by this man, "O Mohammed! Indeed your Lord has made you of most exalted character!"  (Not word for word translation)

Wassalam,
Saleema

I think the other bloke was Carlyle
Incidentally it was pretty interesting to read an article by a catholic orientalist who said that he thought Muhammed(pbuh) was inspired by God. the guy wrote a book on islamic theology.
It has been pretty interesting to see catholic reaction to islam over time.

Initially the prophet was a agent of Satan , if not satan himself, Then he was merely a liar, then it became he suffered from grand mal (epilepsy) lately they've disagreed on whether he was just a good man or whether was indirectly inspired by god..*lol*
