Assalamu alaikum,

Does anyone know where Br. Mukhtar Maghroui is originally from?  How long has he been here?  What kind of credentials does he have? (Islamic knowledge or otherwise).

What about Mohammed Yacoubi?  Where is he from?  Where does he live?  How long has he been here?  What kind of credentials does he have? (Islamic knowledge or otherwise).

JazakAllahu khairan.

walaikum salaam wrt,

br mokhtar is originally from algeria, he went to school in france? and germany and then he came up here to go to school at Syracuse Univ. I think he has a PHD in electrical engineering and something else..he's been in this community about 10 years. I don't know what formal Islamic education he has and from what shaikhs etc,he studied in Algeria and is a hafizulQuran. He is very well read and does alot of studying on his own. His specialization, what he loves is Islamic law- Fiqh.

About M. Yacoubi, check zaytuna's website, you will probably find some info about him there inshallah.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

"Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaquobi descends from a scholarly family whose lineage goes back to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, through his grandson al-Hasan.  He was born in Damascus where he received a traditional Islamic education from his father, the late Shaykh Ibrahim al-Yaqoubi, former Imam and instructor of the Grand Omayyad Mosque.

Shaykh Muhammad pursued his academic studies at universities in Damascus, Beirut, and later Gothenburg.  He served as a Friday speaker (khateeb) and instructor in central Damascus and was a member of the Fatwa Adminstration from 1980 until 1990.  Shaykh Muhammad moved to Sweden in 1991 where he served the Muslim community of Gothenburg as Imam and worked as a teacher and researcher at Gothenburg University, Department of Islamic Studies until 1997.  In addition, he worked between 1998-1999 as Assistant Director for Research and Studies in dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, Kuwait.  He also served as a member of several boards in Europe and the USA.  He now resides in Syria.

Besides Arabic, he speaks English, Swedish, and French, and he reads German.  The list of his books and articles include more than 50 works in Arabic, English, and Swedish of which only 10 are published.  The latest of his works is a translation of al-Tahawiyaah into Swedish and is to be published soon.  Two other studies of fiqh in Arabic are being published in Beirut."
