Cardinal Urges Immigration Rules ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ROME (AP) - A cardinal has urged Italy to favor Catholic immigrants over Muslim ones in order to ``save the nation's identity'' against ``Islam's ideological attack.'' Speaking before some 200 priests at his Bologna archdiocese Wednesday, Cardinal Giacomo Biffi said that the church today faces ``one of the most serious and biggest assaults on Christianity that history remembers.'' ``Italy is not a deserted land with no history or traditions ... that can be populated at random,'' Biffi, who is known for his conservative positions, said in the pastoral letter. According to the Rome newspaper La Repubblica, the cardinal in the past has mentioned Latin Americans, Eritreans and Filipinos as those who should be given priority in Italy's immigration policies. Biffi's remarks sparked protests from some Catholic and left-wing politicians. Many considered the cardinal's position in contrast to that of Pope John Paul II, who has reached out to other religions throughout his 22-year papacy. The government's minister for social solidarity, Livia Turco, told La Repubblica that ``building walls against Islam is irresponsible,'' and that it ``doesn't do justice to a pope who has been professing ecumenism.'' In overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Italy, with a population around 58 million, there are 1.2 million Muslims, Turco said. The anti-immigration Northern League was among those welcoming the cardinal's words. ``After Biffi, nobody can define immigration as a positive, necessary and unchangeable fact,'' said the Northern League's Mario Borghezio, who said the cardinal's ``authoritative words break a taboo.'' Opposition leader Silvio Berlusconi said Thursday that Biffi's words ``deserve attention,'' according to the ANSA news agency. At a European synod at the Vatican last year, several bishops sounded an alarm about Islam making inroads into Europe as increasing numbers of immigrants arrive. |

| Assalamoalykum, yes, sure it is great to hear that Islam is spreading. Get ready for some more ethnic cleansings is the Muslims don't shape up and become a united strong force. To me it is good news and at the same time alarming. I wonder when the US will come out with a similar statement? Wassalam |

| Salaam When the US will come out with similar stuff? Well i read in a book called 'Opus Dei- their kingdom Come' , Opus Dei is the secret service of the catholic church, it consists of fanatical pro-romans who exist in every country and provide data to the roman church. Apparently Louis Freeh the head of the American FBI is a member! If this were true it would create an immense conflict of interest, anyway read the book! |
