Secular Turkey?

Assalaamu alaikum,

It is anti-Islamic! It is really sad to see the government of a predominantly Muslim population acting in this way.

Police Close Islamic Youth Offices

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - Police have closed down 18 offices of a pro-Islamic youth organization as part of a crackdown on groups the government suspects of ties to radical Islamic factions, a spokesman for the group said Saturday.

Mehmet Kocatepe, spokesman for the National Youth Foundation, said police launched the operation Wednesday, searching and sealing 18 group offices throughout Turkey.

Police said they closed the offices because they consider the group illegal, Kocatepe said.

Turkey's government is cracking down on groups it suspects have ties to radical Islamic factions. The state has identified radical Islam as one of the principal threats to the stability of this Muslim, but staunchly secular, country.

Kocatepe said the foundation was not involved in any illegal activity and planned to appeal the closures in court.

``This is an antidemocratic maneuver,'' he charged.

The National Youth Foundation, which often participates in pro-Islamic demonstrations, claims to have 15,000 members and 35,000 sympathizers.
