slm I'm going to explain to you people how to make boiled rice because some of you have no clue how to do it and think its something only your mom knows how to make or the local Kabob House. First you need to start off with quality rice, I'm not talking about Uncle Ben's or Minute Rice, I'm talking about premium quality rice. Get some Basmati Long Grain rice. The first thing you need to do is wash the rice and remove all the excess dirt and starch. I suggest you use one or two cups of rice, and pour that into a big pot. Now go take some tap water and put it into the pot and move the pot around. See how the water in the pot became cloudy? Well dump that water out slowly, make sure you don't lose any rice grains, and repeat this 3 or 4 more times till the cloudiness of the water is gone. Now then we are ready to cook. If you used 1 cup of rice make sure you use 2.5 times as much water, i.e. 2.5 cups of water for 1 cup of rice. Turn on the stove to high and let the pot cook. Once the water starts to boil, that means you are getting closer. After 3 or 4 minutes after boiling, stick a spoon in their and take out a grain or two of rice. Look at it, touch it, how does it feel? If its hard that means its not ready. Let it cook some more, and try again 3 or 4 mins. later. After some time the rice should be soft, and should have expanded considerably and be fat not thin. Ok, now you are practically done, but what about the excess water? This is where some people mess up and just let all the water boil and then the rice becomes sticky like Japanese rice. This is not what we want, we want quality rice. Wear some kitchen gloves or grab the pot with some towel and take it near the sink and tip it to its side so all the excess water comes out. Or if you are fortunate to have a coliander or other similiar strainer dump all the contents of the pot into that and let the water drip through the coliander. Poor back the contents back into the pot and there you go, you have steamed rice that looks and tastes like the professionals make. In the next recipe I will talk about Terriyaki Chicken. For now I'll stop and let people ask questions. |

slm Boiled rice is for kids!! :) Here is my recipe for..hmmm...don't have a name for it but it is better than boiled rice. And I make it in the microwave oven! This recipe is for one person. Experimenters can extrapolate :) - Take 1/3 cup of Basmati rice, wash it, and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. - Cut some onions, put it in a glass bowl with a little oil. Heat it in the microwave at full power for about 2 minutes or until brown. Monitor this operation otherwise the onions may burn! - Put the onions in a plastic (microwaveable) bowl. Add 1.1 (!) cup water. Add salt, spices, pepper to suit your taste. If you garbanzo beans or other cooked vegetables, add them also. - Microwave on high (full) for about 3 minutes - Drain water from the soaked rice and put in the bowl. - Cover bowl and microwave at 60 percent for 10 minutes. - Stir the rice after 10 minutes. - Microwave a further 2-3 minutes at 60 percent. - Voila! You have nicely tasting rice. Wasalaam. |

Asalaam alaikum wrt wb, Thanks everyone. :) I know boiled rice sounds so simple, but very few people know how to make it correctly, at least the people I have seen cook it. Asim that microwave recipe you described takes as long as the stove variation? ??? But I guess its good when you don't have a stove. :) |

Assalamu Alaikum, Now, Arshad let me tell you how to make boiled rice. One I make it real well, and it's a basic Turkish food. As you said, first you need to get quality rice. My mom buys Nishiki and it's good quality. Then you take about 2-2 1/2 cups of rice and put it in a big bowl (can be plastic or glass), then you put salt about 1-1 1/2 tbsp, and we it. The water level is about an inch or two above the surface of the rice. Then you let that sit for a couple of hours and after a couple of hours, you will have noticed that the rice has gotten more plump. Next you take a pan and cut about 4 tbsp of butter and melt it into a T-Fal pan. Then you put in about 3 cups of water for every 2 cups of rice that you used. Then you wait for the water to boil and then you drain the water out of the rice that you let sit for a couple of hours. The temp. for this is between med. and high, but mainly high for the first part. After you've drained the water out, you put the rice into the boiling water and put on the lid. You turn the temp. to high and you wait for the rice to cook. However, every couple minutes you're going to look at the rice to see if the water has evaporated. You slowly turn down the temp and it is going to reach a stage when the water is all gone and you have to let the rice sit at low temp for a couple of minutes, about 5. Then, let it cool and enjoy. BON APPETITE!!! Salam |

This is the trick- cook the rice as the package says. except Add 2 Tablespoons of Butter/ per cup of uncooked rice in the pot before you begin cooking. It is as easy as that! |
