Anyone have any near death experiences they want to share?  I have one I'll share a little later.

Assalamu alaikum,

Man, Arshad, everytime I'm in the driving seat, it's pretty much a near death experience for me!  It's only the question of how often I realize it!

I've had several incidents where I've been forced to realize that we have absolutely NO control over the car when we're going 70 mph on a highway.  Consider an 18-wheeler passing you from the right lane, and all of a sudden it swerves into your lane.  Maybe the guy is drowsy or unattentive, but man that's scary.

We think we have control ... but we really don't.  And Allah is to be thanked for saving us countless times, and keeping us in His protection.  Indeed He has Power over all things, and He knows what we perceive not.

Wassalamu alaikum.

Asalaam alaikum wrt wb,

Ok, I will share with you all my near death experience in detail.  It occurred about 2 years back.  A few months prior to that I remember going to a dinner and when it was maghrib time I went to people and asked them to pray with me.  I remember going up to one man and he smiled and laughed and said, "You pray for me."   Those were the last words I heard from his lips, because about two weeks later he was taken to a hospital because he was hit by a car running a red light.  His head was swollen and deformed in the hospital and within a week of staying in the hospital he died, leaving a wife and children behind.  It was a difficult time for many people there as they didn't think it could happen to someone that young.

A few weeks later I was getting ready for work and took out this light brown coduroy shirt I have.  Its made of a very thick material.  That particular day I said I am going to fast today, and so I did.  I was getting ready to leave for work and proceeded to enter the freeway.  I was stuck in a traffic jam, traffic was completely stopped.  The worst part was that there were no cars behind me in this traffic jam, I was the last car.

I've never been in a car accident before in my entire life and as I glanced in my rearview mirror I saw a vehicle approaching my car at a high rate of speed.  It must have been doing 55 or 60 mph.  It was getting closer and closer to me.  The guy didn't even put on his brakes until he was 10 feet away.  As I saw him getting closer and closer I said to myself why isn't he stopping.  And then he hit my car.  My car flew in the air, yes flew in the air.  All this time I had my foot on the break peddle and was wondering why the car wasn't stopping.  My car flew into a ditch 30 feet below.  As it flew into the air it went through some trees and landed on its roof on the passenger side.  The roof on the passenger side caved in, the windshield exploded, the airbags in the car deployed.  There was a large THUD sound as the car hit the ground.  I saw smoke inside the car, and the light went on in the car.  The wheels were still rotating but the car was upside down.  If the car had landed on the driver's side I would probably be dead.

The first thing I said was, alhumdullilah I am alive, and I turned off the car engine.  The door wouldn't open because the car's frame was bent and it was upside down.  I started to panick thinking the smoke was from something burning in the car and I wanted to get out.  I tried to squeeze out of the driver's window, but it was a little hard because a tree was blocking my path partly.  A man came down to the ditch with a cellular phone, he was calling the police.  I was pulled out of the car by him and some other people he yelled to.

When I got to the top, 4 police cars had arrived, a police helicopter, an ambulance, and a fire engine.  Alhumdullilah, I was lucky to be alive.  The 18 year old that hit my car stuck out his hand to say he was sorry, I shook it.

For weeks the left side of my head was completely numb, I had some neck and back pain, a fractured finger.  When I got home I felt the top of my head and pulled out 3 pieces of glass that I guess came from the winshield.  The next 2 days I felt a lot of pain all over my body, I could barely walk.  The pain I felt in my head was the most severe pain I ever felt and it just intensified when I was under stress or someone upset me, the pain was unbearable..

But alhumdullilah, I came out of that episode ok.   'Death can happen to anyone at anytime, for me it was not yet my time.

Salam,

Wanna hear my near death experience? I was learning to swim and this was in the ninth grade. I was floating on my back and then decided to dive down and swim underwater, as I flipped over and went underneath the water, I panicked for some reason. I don't know why. I got so scared that I totally forgot to move my legs and instead starting thrashing the water with my arms. I came up for a split second and I gulped in air and went underneath again and swolled some water.

At this point I thought I was going to die. I started thinking of wheather I will go to Heaven or Hell. I read the Shahada in my heart. I thought that that was it, I was going to meet Allah now. I surfaced again for a split second and then sank back down gulping in some air and water. I wondered with desperation why no one was coming out to help me. There were so many girls there. I did not want to die in such a state, I screamed inside my head that please don't let me die painfully like that, that Allah please take my soul some other way.

Then as things were blurring around me in the pool, I saw an arm strech out towards me and my friend Tamkia pulled me out. I thank Allah.

I have never gone swimming after that and don't intend to.

Wassalam

Saleema ,mine was similar to yours,I was 10 years old (New York)and the swimming insructress said to go to the deep side of the pool and to try to move like a frog,if you feel you are sinking give me a sign with two fingers and I will pull you out, well I did what she said, the other girls all were moving in the water and I started sinking and sinking,I tried to raise the two fingers but she was busy talking to someone else, then by Allah's help she saw me and pulled me out.I hated swimming ever since and I always had this fear of water. Now finally after my kids grew up I learned to swim, and I am not afraid anymore(it took such a long time though)!!

I can see how swimming would be a tramatic experience for you both.

I think its good to know swimming in case of an emergency.  What happens if there is a flood in your community or you are on a boat and it sinks.  Its good to be safe.  I've found that whenever I did get tired of swimming I would just swim on my back and that way I didn't have to expend really any energy.

I was wondering if it was proper for a woman to post on this forum- then I noticed I wasn't the only one...

Here is my near death story....

My first marriage was an abusive one. I just never could tell when the next explosion would happen.

One night it became painfully clear it was going to be my last night on this Earth. As he lunged tword me  all I could think about was asking for Allah's swt help.
So I yelled- "Aouthu billahi mina-shaytani-rrajeem!!"

Masha Allah- it stopped him dead in his tracks!! It was as if a sheild had come between us and his arm was frozen in mid air!

" Verily the help of Allah is always near..."

O' Kath that must've been an ugly life, but you have inshallah earned a lot of hassanat for having to go thru so much. There is a hadeeth (meaning of which is)"any hurt,or heart-pain or worry that a muslim is encountered with even if he is pricked by a  small thorn,a sin is removed from him and a hassanah is added to his hassanat".
This is only the meaning of the hadeeth, inshalaah I will get the right translation soon.

Hmmm, abusive husbands, that would be a good thread.I wonder what are the origins of this abuse,I mean could it be bad up-bringing or selfishness or a bad abusive father in the first place???

If you mean immediately-

I ran into another room and called my father who was a thousand miles away, and asked him to come get me or send me bus fare. ( I was very naive at the time and did not know there were shelters to go to.)
My Dad, said no. ( My reversion was very hard on him)

My husband was so shocked about my Dad's answer- he became very compassionate. Interesting ending, for that night- huh?

Allah swt can change someones heart in a minute...

Sorry, but here I am seeking knowledge again!
Arshad...did you not go to a hospital after the crash?
I can also understand the people not wanting to go swimming again. I didn't nearly die but I fell off a horse after it galloped away with me still on it and whacked my head on some branches before I fell off......I never went horseriding again..

Aasalam Alaikum Brothers and Sisters,

Near death experience.... hmmmm interesting topic.

I have so many.... I honestly cannot count them.

I was in the U.S. Army from the time I was 17... I was in volved in Desert Storm, Somalia, and Bosnia, all before my 22nd birthday.

This particular incident took place in Somalia..... during the civilian uprising that the government was trying to stop. I had been shot by a sniper just the day before, (in the arm and I could not evac to a hospital because I was my A-Team's only medic). We were walking around the streets, and I was instructed to check out a civilian house that had been hit by a mortar round. When I enterd I got attacked by a Somali.... we fought for what felt like an hour. The whole time we were fighting he was screaming "Jihad Jihad!!!" (please keep in mind that this was many years before my conversion). During the fight I was stabbed by his bayonett in the stomach. Relying on my years of martial arts training I finaly dispatched him. As he was dying in my arms, he was crying, and whispering something in arabic (sorry I still do not speak arabic well and could not repeat it, let alone write it).

When it was all over I passed out from loss of blood, my arm and belly wounds both bleeding a lot. I woke up in the M*A*S*H*, all stitched up, and with my second purple heart.

I, to this day, regret having to kill that man (he was a brother).... but as this was war, and it was either him or me.... human instinct took over and I chose me. May Allah forgive me for the deaths I caused when I was in the military.

Humbly, and Sincerely
Usamah

walaikum salaam wrt,

br usamah there are many examples from Islamic history where people used to be the worst enemies of Islam and have killed Muslims and then Allah changes their hearts and they become the best of Muslims and have later fought fiercely in the battles on the side of Islam. One example is Wahshi, an Abyssinian slave who bought his freedom by killing Hamza, the lion of the martyrs. Many, many years later after he became Muslim and after the prophet [saw] had died he killed one of the worst enemies of Islam.  He was known to have said, "I killed the best of them, and the worst of them."

There is also another story of 2 men who killed each other and both ended up in paradise, anyone remember that one????

It has been the source of many bad dreams and sleepless nights.

One day it will go away.... in sha' Allah

Well said Br meraj

As for near death experiences, can I include all those times as a kid when I thought my mother was going to kill me? ;-)

Seriously though, the thread makes me think of what things I would need to do if someone said I was going to die tomorrow. Its sad that I can't say I would do nothing.

You know it is good to hear some humor in this pretty serious thread.

I dont think I can count on any of my digits I thought my life was over when I upset my mother and father. :)

In all seriousness though, thank you all for your understanding with my past. I have been afraid for quite some time to talk about it. In fact, I have not told any of the brothers at the masjid about it yet. It is an uncomfortable topic for me because of my conversion. And the fact that every conflict I have been in has been in Islamic countries.

Sincerely
Usamah

[slm],

hmm...well I dont remember any of my near death experiences, but my mother says I was near death one time when I was 3.

It was in 1979 when a riot broke out in my city among hindus and muslims. As usually happens in these riots in India the police invariably is biased and fires on the muslims in the name of containing the riot.

My father and some of my uncles when they heard of the riot and shops etc. being burnt, rushed out to side with other muslims and my mother and my auntie (my mother's sister), who lived close by ran with us children to the mosque (my mother was expecting at the time and she had two of us , me being 3 and my sister being 1 and 1/2 yrs.

And my mother says we had nothing to eat or drink for many hours as police kept firing even on the masjid (one girl sitting just beside me got hit by a bullet and died). So in the heat my mother says I began to faint and she did not know what to do. In the meanwhile one of my uncle who was at work at the time rioting started, after hearing of the riot, rushed towards home and came to the masjid. when he saw me almost fainting from heat and thirst he snatched me from my mothers arms and dipped me into a drum full of water and I kind of breathed again as my mother would say!

After a while the firing stopped and ambulances started coming, and the men said that the women and children should be escorted to a safe place first (our homes were burnt). So in one of the ambulance the women and children started to fill in. But my mother's sister said to my mother that we should not be worried about saving our lives when our husband's lives are not secure so they should not get into the ambulance. So my mother stopped. But one girl told my mother to give me to her so at least I can be saved, and my mother gave me to her, but my auntie snatched me away from that woman and said to my mother, how can you separate your child from yourself, and so I stayed with my mother and the ambulance went away without us.

Later the rioting stopped as the military came in and  my mother says that we heard a little later that the whole ambulance was burnt on its way by the rioters and no one survived! inna lillahi wa ilaihe rajeoon!

-----
so that was as my mother tells me , even if you ask her now, she says as if the memory is very fresh in her mind. Although as I think of it now the plight of our brothers and sisters in places such as kosovo, chechnya, falesteen etc. come to mind as well as the rioting that happens all so often in India and in which muslims invariably are the targets.

May Allah punish the oppressors and keep the Ummah on the straight path!

Mashallah, we've faced death but it wasn't our time yet.

When I was about 8, i was swimming at the beach and got caught in an undertow.  I surfaced way out from the beach, and out of nowhere a gigantic wave came crashing down and slammed me to the sand, then I was just twisting and turning, getting scraped by the sand.  Trying to surface for air was impossible because of the size of the wave.  Then the undertow came again and I panicked, I tried to dig into the sand so I wouldn't get carried out again.  That didn't work and once again I tried to make it up to the surface, alhamdulilah I made it but when I finally surfaced all I saw was black with little white dots.  I started screaming and one of my uncles came out and got me.  I was almost unconscious, they laid me down and I was ok after that.
The other time was more serious.  I was about 16 and visiting family back home in Venezuela.  I was staying with one of my aunts and it wasn't the nicest neighborhood.  Me and a cousin went to get haircuts and coming back we were ambushed by a couple of gangsters.  They had big .38 guns aimed at our heads.  I thought that was it for me.  They searched us, took our money, and then started threatening us since we were from the neighborhood they were at war with.  The whole time they were talking all I saw was the black hole from the gun.  It was broad daylight and all i could see was the gun.  So they kept with the intimidation, saying they knew where we lived, etc.  We were like "what are you talking about, i don't live over there, etc" After about 15 minutes of this they let us go.
Later on when I accepted Islam I realized I could've died as a non-muslim.  May Allah save us from this.

asalaam alaikum friends -
plz refrain from making any mental/brain jokes ;)
hehe how bout my own brain story? (nope, not the mental hospital one, this ones a different one :) )

okay so i was like 8 or 9 and my smarty shalwar cousins dared me to climb over the monkey bars (im *deathly* afraid of heights) - well, im also stubborn as a mule...so i climbed halfway up and on my way down i looked through the bars and got dizzy. my bro got worried and yelled, "api, just slide through the bars and get down! its okay, we dont care about the dare...just get out!"

so im struggling to get my little body thru the bars and im almost out when i realize i have a big head - this is about the same time that my head smacks the iron bar and i feel a "thump!" as i slide down. once on the ground, i give my cousins a weak smile and my bro starts screaming like a girl. "whats wrong, silly?" i asked him. then i saw the blood trickling down the side of my head and i gasped. my cousins stared at me in shock (our moms were really gonna kill us for this one!) while my bro kept crying and yelling for me to go home.

so - this is the scariest part of all - i get on the only bike we brought and rode to my aunts house some 7 blocks away...all alone, mom says its Allah (swt) who saved me from falling down dead in the middle of the road....and got the yelling of my life on our way to the hospital where i got 11 stitches on the head and grounded from the park for a month.

needless to say...i hate monkey bars!

speaking of getting bashed on the head..
I'm sure most kids have had their head bashed in at some stage or another. When I was about 5 I fell off my bike and knocked myself unconcious and split my head open.
So this neighbour finds me and brings me home. My dad took me to the doctor and I got stitched. Then about 2 weeks later I fell off my bike *again*, cut the same place open again and knocked myself out.
Guess who found me?
yeah, the same neighbour...he wasn't too impressed.

I was always having accidents, so many that my parents were taken seperately and questioned by the police because the hospital informed them that I was always there with some injury or another.
My poor parents...I was just a wild tomboy child.

Alhumdoolillah, since I was 9 I haven't had anymore *big* accidents.
