As Salaam Alaikum,
Yes I have gotten that question about wearing in the shower and to bed. I had to laugh, I didn't want to make her feel bad but it amazing how often people don't THINK before they speak. I also got a question that was weird because it was not somehting anybaody else had asked me. This girls at my college (I'm the only practicing muslim there) asked me if I miss wearing earings:) I laughed because of all the questions I have gotten (are you hot, doesn't it annoy you, why do you wear it,are you bald, are you a girl!!) I never thought of a question about earings. Well, I told her I wear them sometimes under my hijab and when I am around sister and family i hook myself up!

It may surprise you ,but some people here in Saudi Arabia are also making fun of those who cover their faces or wear their abayas on the head.
It is really so sorrowful to see some of the muslim ummah trying to immitate the non-muslims to the extent that the muslims find it strange to see covered or hijabi women!!
Re: Hijab

Salam,

Muslims laugh at women who cover??!?? In Saudi??
Now that's strange!! How's that possbile? Women have to cover when they go outside unless the rules have changed. And no one covers inside around the family or just other women.

So can you explain.

Curious

Once a girl in 7th grade asked me why I wear the hijab and i said sarcasticaly, to wipe my glasses with. Heheh. She just looked at me becaue most of the time I wore contacts.

Hmmm... that's all I can think of. Oh Yeah, once I punched a guy in the stomach cuz he pulled my scarf, but it didn't fall off. The whole hall filled with people laughed at him and he never tried something like that ever agian.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Hmm what about walking with an American non-Muslim friend who later got asked, "why were you walking with those indonesian girls??"

Or walking with my hijabi sister and having some idiot freshmen scream from a bus "azalamalikum my sistas!!!" Every Single Day.

Or some random guy asking me how I manage to keep it attached to my head.
"Staple gun.  Keeps it on real tight."  "Oh for real?"

Or do the colors mean anything?  Like, are there levels or something, like karate?

Or you take that off when you get married right?

Or does your father make you wear that?

Or what is that thing called?
"a scarf."  "No but what is it *really* called?"  "umm.. hijab."  "hee-jayb?"  "Right."

My favorites: (these are non-hijabi related)

Are you Islam?
(Yes, I am the *entire* religion.  This is my friend, Christianity.)

So you gotta, like, marry a prince right?

Wow, your life must suck.

The question i got asked was not about hijab but my prayer rug, one of my co-worker saw it lying in a shelve behind me and asked what is it and i said it is praying rug and then she asked if i wear it when i offer my prayers!!!(she thought since i wear so many things... :))
Also she asked if she can see it or only people of my religion can see it (like something sacred!!)
about hijab i guesss everybody got asked these questions:
How forced it?
Dont you get hot?
One time i was at ToysR us and somebody said "Hey it is a free country you dont have to do this(pointing toward hijab)!"

I was sitting in the back seat of our car, and my older brother was sitting in the front passenger seat.  He turned around and asked,
"Hey Nazia, does that affect your hearing?"

And i promptly responded,
"Yes, I am wearing earrings."

<cue confused look from my bro.>
Then,

" DOES IT AFFECT your hearing??"

again,
"YES, I am wearing earrings"
cue confused look from me, (my brother, caring about me jewelry habits??)

A third time,
"I SAID: DOES IT AFFECT YOUR HEARING??"
Me:
"YES!!! I AM WEARING EARRINGS! WHY DO YOU CARE??"

Needless to say, he got his answer.

Assalam Alaikum,
Like Sister Aminah, until recently, I was the only hijab wearing muslim on campus. A few people actually asked me what form of cancer I had, and if this was how ppl dressed in Africa! The best one so far was at the beginning of this year, when I upgraded my hijab from just covering the hair to the whole thing (with much influence from this board, mashaAllah), and a co worker referred to me as "almost Muslim!" For her, I would become full Muslim when my whole face was covered. That really cracked me up!

Sr Se7en, these were the funniest!

Or some random guy asking me how I manage to keep it attached to my head.
"Staple gun.  Keeps it on real tight."  "Oh for real?"

when i started wearing hijab, no one said a thing.. it was pretty odd cause spring semester i wasn't wearing it and then in fall i was and i was working in the university computer rooms, a very public job...and i was all waiting for SOMEONE to say SOMETHING, then it was the guys who started asking "so ummm... why do you wear that now??? what happenned over the summer??"

one time on an airline...
btw as an aside, dawah tip... when you get on a plane, train, bus anything always make a comment to the person who sits down next to you, otherwise the entire trip you act as strangers cause it's awkward to talk after you've ignored each other, and you've lost a chance to open your mouth and show you're not a terrorist freak

so one time on an airline this guy ends up sitting next to me, usually i try to put a partition like my bag or something so then i start talking to him and he turns out to be a professional soccer player that travels alot and is going to another game.. and then all of the sudden he says "so what's with the PARAPHANALIA?"  i was like ...??vhaaat? and then he points airily at my head.. and then i launched into my usual speech :)
i guess i have to give him a break since he thought my paraphanalia was like his helmut and stuff !!

you would be surprised at the rate things are changing here, the girls have flipped!!
Everybody(except some)is trying to imitate what they see on TV,and a lot think that whatever is islamic is old-fashioned,in fact to make da'awa here is like it used to be in the days of Quraish!!
If you are straight and want to do things the islamic way you are a nerd.
*Of course the organization of "Al-amr bilma'arouf
and nahy an almunkar " are doing their best, but they also are sneered at and laughed at.
*Do you know what it all goes back to the parents, poor things they have a lot to be asked about on The Day of Judgement!!
I hope Allah opens the hearts of al-muslimeen all over the world to go back to the sunnah of the prophet sala ALlahu alyhi wasalam.

Asalamauaykum, I have to agree with Widad,
i feel more comfortable in my hijab and practising my deen, here in aus, than when we use to live in emirates, and it's not cos i was younger then cos we still go on the summer there, but Rhamadhan and tarawih is better there cos almost the whole country is into it and u hear the azan five times a day/ 6 times in rhamadhan(cos tehy give a warning one to wake us up for suhur:) ), i guess u can't get everything. alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Allah wa barakatuhu ....*lol* some of those comments really mademe laugh.....i've been through many and have heard quite a few as well..

a sis i know was working once and this guy came up to her....as if he was undercover..he looked around him and then asked her 'whats up with the hood?'

the first day i wore hijab  i got  'r u getting married?'

at work  a man said to me...'urnot in ur country anymore' ...i was about to alugh because i was born in canada and lived here all my life...but instead os saying that...i pretty much said to him 'borders don't define faith'

my favorite one .......'r u somali'? ..masha'Allah there are many somali sis's in my city who wear hijab ....

and there's the ever popular 'don't u get hot in that' ...the best asnwer to say is ...'the faith in my heart is stronger than the heat'-it'll make them stop and think

but alhamdulilla i haven't really gotten anything too insulting ...and alhamdulillah more questions than comments:o)

Salam Nazia!

that is funny--about the ears. a guy wanted to date me in my high school so he can see my hair. I explained to him there was no such thing as dating in our religion but he just didn't get it!!

he pointed out muslims who dated and asked why couldn't I? One day, just to see his reaction I asked him if he would marry me after a few dates and he stared at me.  "What! Marry you?!? I am only in high school."  You know its not that they are afraid of settling down with one person, they are saddened by the thought of leaving all the others.

As Salaam ALaikum,
I must say this has got to be one of the most entertaing threads I have read in a looong time. Those comments that se7en made had me laugh out loud right here in the computer lab. Just another reason for the people here to stare at me :)

In Boston it has been very common for sisters to say "HEll is hotter" I always liked that one. I usually laugh when people ask me questions that are silly but I am so light hearted that I laugh at insults! This guy once walked by me and said "Take it off, you goin to hell anyway"!!!! I kinda yelped/laughed and then i shook my head. He didn't even have the guts to stop walking and face me! Thos types of remarks really incur the wrath of Allah. Too bad for him:)

Then once this guy was insluting everybody on the bus (he was crazy and VERY gay) and then he turned to me and started saying how I was dumb to let a man tell me how to dress and how could I come out the house covered up like a "king size bed"!!! Now since he was a few sandwiches short of a picnic I just laughed and said something smart back to him. When I was getting off the bus the driver was like "girl, don't let these fools get to you. Keep up the good work" or something and she wasn't even muslim! That was a strange experience I tell ya;)

Assalamu Alaikum,
Ya know, I've had people ask me so much about my scarf and they're the same type of questions every time. The first question they askme is why I wear a hijab, then they ask me if I wear it in the shower, am I happy to take it off when I get home from school, or if I have to wear my hijab at home. I don't blame them, they don't know much about our hijab, but there are some people that ask the same questions year after year even if they know the answer, they ask them just to get you pissed off.
I don't know if anyone else got the same questions or not. They really should start teaching about our hijab in school. They talk about what we do, like make Hajj, give Zakat, pray five times a day, and they know about Muhammad (SAW). However, they don't speak about one aspect of the religion which they see every day. They don't see us giving Zakat or praying in school yet they learn about it. And they see us wearing scarves every day with our arms and legs covered yet they don't know about it.
I'm sorry but I pity them because they don't know the feeling of wearing a hijab. I'm very proud of wearing a hijab and I will give up anything for it if I have to. When I wear a hijab, it tells people of who I am and what kind of a person I am and people can't see that. If people really respected our hijab, I believe that they wouldn't ask questions like if I wore it taking a shower or when I went to sleep. What's the point of a shower if you have your hair covered.
If and when they do ask me stupid questions like that, I just tell them to figure it out for themselves because this society is so dependent on each other and want to know everything right away and has lost the idea of thinking for themselves.

As well as many negative comments, theres a flip-side. A lot of people treat me with greater respect than others because of the Hijab. Mostly non-muslim men.

There was one time I was in the Student Union at University a few months ago and I was walking past this guy. He said the four letter 's' word in his conversation to someone else. I didn't really notice. But then he shouted after me, something like 'sorry I didn't mean to say that in front of you'!!

"Do you swim in that?"
"Do you swim in normal pools or in ponds and lakes cuz I've never seen people like you at the pool?"
"You're gonna marry some rich, old guy with a lot of oil, right?"
The list goes on.
There are guys who ask me why I wear hijab and when I'm done explainin it they say, "SO, what do you look like underneath?"
That is so annoying. It's like they're deaf or something.
ARggh...

I enjoyed all your comments so much!:) They made me laugh, and I was surprised, too.  The last thread on this topic was all so positive. Well, I am having a hard time finding time to keep up with all that's going on here...because I'm busy sewing up a hajib wardrobe. I'm gonna try it. Mom, whose really a tailor, isn't letting me cheat a little here and there...she insists that the sleeves be to the wrists, and thought the dresses should be longer.  I'll just have to hem them at home. My family, who are not moslim, are totally in to this change in my faith! They act like they really want to see this be a positive experience for me. I'm a little baffled, but, they are so loving. And the cop's follow me when I go to pick up my kids on Friday's. That's so wierd. But my plates are expired;) anyhow. Salaam, Sonny

WEll all these hijab stories bring back soo many memories from my days in HS..at college..i havent gotten as many questions..
When i started experimenting hijab in 7th grade, i used to sit in the corner of my social studies class with a yahudi as my teacher (he was really nice tho).. i used to wear this bring PINk one, but the smart person i was, i would put headphones on under the scarf and sit through class and pretend like i was listening..and all the girls around me just thought i wore it so that i could hide my headphones.haha
9th grade..i was walking down the senior hall..and there is me..lil short freshman..and the #1 quarterback wuts his name..bob rio..or something dared some other guy to try to pull of my scarf. now as im walking down..i feel someone started to pull my scarf..i turn around and caught him red handed..and now all the football players are watching in the middle of aVERY VERY crowded hallway of seniors..i turned to him and GLARED at him..and just said.."DONT U DARE!" and walked right off..and all he did was put his hands up like in surrender...ofcourse as i walked off..i cracked up..and couldnt stop laughing til i got to my class..heh.
now that ive told my famouse hijab stories..
ofcourse the famous questions were asked.."do u get hot".."do ur brothers see ur hair"..blah blah
but the one that no one mentioned waas "towelhead"..and i had this one redneck guy ask why i was wearing a tablecloth. I seriously just sat there and stared at him..and walked away amazed( he was doing it to be rude)..I mean do our scarves even looooook like a tablecloth.
Like it was mentioned before..IGNORANT people are everywhere!
. A lot of people treat me with greater respect than others because of the Hijab. Mostly non-muslim men.
I'd have to agree with that, mashaALlah. I'm not sure whether I've told U this... but remember John Foster Building?

Well, they've got this long corridor and double doors. So, I was like going through the already opened double doors. And this guy (erm... I don't think he is Muslim, but if he is, then, alhamdulillah), who was coming from the opposite side, and he actually, stood at the side of the double doors (of which it is big enough for both of us to pass through comfortably without banging unto each other), looked down, and waited for me to pass, then he passed. And I'm like... wow!
well, either that or he can't stand the sight of me *L* well, inshaALlah, it's due to good reasons :)

ANd what I like abt the UK, is that people, like strangers... I mean... even stranger-brothers who wear gold would come up and say, the salam with sincerity, mashaAllah.

But becoz the hijab, kinda identifies U being Muslim, well, weird things happen too. I was just minding my own business, crossing the road at the traffic lights, when this man walking from the opposite side of the road muttered "Muslim" when I was within audibility. ANd I'm like - errr... I know that, already! hmmm... strange....

And another time, I was going up the coach, and this guy, muttered something... and I looked at him strangely, coz, I don't know what he said.. and he repeated the words again... and still, I have no idea what he was saying... then, he later said,"Oh... I'm testing my Arabic on you... just learnt some new Arabic words" I think he was saying an anglicised salam! Strange...

I met more strange people in the UK during those 3 short years than the 20 odd years of my life in Singapore! ;)
I'm amazed myself, why I like that place so much!

As salamu alaykum

Once I was told that I was wearing a diaper on my head.  At the same time there have been many positive comments.  A couple of weeks ago I was walking with my friend from Mauritania and a women told us that we looked beautiful.
All I can say is al hamdu lillah I'm a Muslim and it does not matter what others think.

Of course I remember John Foster building and all the times we spent rushing down that corridor cos we were late meeting Brother B!!
He he. He was always so patient with us, when we'd rush in soooo late and flustered.

I remember when you told me abt the guy who called you 'Muslim', you were sooo shocked. ;)

How can you say people are strange in the UK?! We know you love it really anyway, even our chewing-gum covered streets, with dog's stuff and litter everywhere!! :D

(Yes, I am the *entire* religion.  This is my friend, Christianity.)

So you gotta, like, marry a prince right?

Wow, your life must suck.

Assalam u Alikum,
Well,I dont got no high school stories to relate since I didnt go to high school in States but this is what has happened:
San Antonio, TX:One black ,drunk dude hanging around the River Walk asks me if I am from India(I was wearing a shalwar-qameez and dupatta).I said no,I am not. But he kinda starts getting funky and insists I AM FROM India. Well,I just walked away cuase I thought he would make me cry(for no reason otehr than talking so loud about where I was from).
And the next week, same area,I am in my hijaab and a long dress ,and this black dude follows me all the way from the last block(couldnt hear him calling me;was really busy talking to my friends :)) and tells me that I am looking nice in this scarf.I was amazed!!!!!

Chicago: This white lady sitting besides me in the bus gets cranky when mu shalwar-qameez and hijaab touches her while I am pulling the cord. SHe just pulled away from me as if I was some lower caste( Na'audhubillah!)or dont wash my clothes with the same detergent as her!!!

Rapid City: Do u have to wear it while going to bed??
Can ur bro and dad see ur hair??
Or....Too bad u cant go to the pool.My answer was ,who told u I cant GO TO the pool???I sure can, cant just swim infront of all those na-mehrams.
........stuff like that. It wasnt as good as our sisters in high school have experienced but will post some later when I remember something cause I hear stuff like that all the time at workplace.
Wa'asalam.

Asalaamu Alaikum,

Wow, some of the sisters' stories here really cracked me up!
Especially the "Are you Islam?" "Yes, I am the *entire* religion, and this is my friend Christianity." that was hilarious!! Probably because that has happened to me more times than I can remember.

I've also gotten the thing about the color of the scarf, usually people thought I wore a certain color because of being a part of a particular sect of Islam, because this one shia sister always wore white, and I usually wore a black scarf, lol. I once wore a white scarf and my teacher asked in front of the whole class if I did so because of some special occasion, I simply replied.."uh...umm..no, actually, I just figured it matched better with my outfit." lol

Its interesting how people get so interested in the color or pattern of the scarf, my teacher insisted I come to school wearing a paisly (sp?) or tie-die colored scarf. He was weird.

I always am asked if I have to wear it in the shower, while in bed, infront of my dad, while watching t.v., etc...it cracks me up every time.

Have any of you ever been harassed because of wearing hijab?

Wasalaam :)

Assalamu alaikum,
i had this one redneck guy ask why i was wearing a tablecloth. I seriously just sat there and stared at him..and walked away amazed( he was doing it to be rude)..I mean do our scarves even looooook like a tablecloth.
I actually bought a really pretty tablecloth to use as a hijab. :D
My sister teases me about it.

A question I was asked recently is what is wrong with the culture/religion I was born with.  At first I thought the woman who asked this was going to be a Christian missionary or something due to the assertive manner in which her question was phrased, but it turns out that she was just curious about Islam and thought that asking me would be less intimidating than asking someone else.

I also know of a Bosnian-Muslim girl who, when wearing hijab, was asked if she was actually Muslim.  Apparently, the person addressing her couldn't believe that pale people can be Muslim too!

wassalam,
Leslie
