What is brotherhood?

How would you define it?  And what are the signs of a strong brotherhood?

You may approach the topic from the point of view of brotherhood b/w two individuals, or brotherhood within a group of Muslims.

Wassalamu alaikum.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Hmmm...brotherhood? A hood/umbrella for brothers! This is a good definition :) It encompases common interests, group protection, comaraderie, and directed pursuit of goals.

A good sign of a strong brotherhood is respect for its leaders. This respect in turn will come when an absolute law is being followed that is beyond dispute.

Okay, this is too abstract. Let's hear some practical stuff.

Wasalaam.

Assalamu alaikum,

Asim, your definition sounds more like a group of armed forces than brothers :)

I think you got a small part of the answer, but ...

Anyone else?

Hehe, I wrote that at 4 am, eyes groggy, mind befogged, thinking of war strategies for D-Day (meaning deadline day). No wonder I could only come up with "directed pursuit of goals." :)

But seriously, the question of brotherhood is not something one can explain in a few words. It is deep (and vague) and requires a discussion. I will leave that to others. BTW, what do you have in mind ???

Good start.  Now we're getting somewhere!

Let's see if someone else can add some food for thought first.

broth·er·hood
n.

1.The state or relationship of being brothers.
2.Fellowship.
3.Abbr. B. An association of men, such as a fraternity or union, united for common purposes.
4.All the members of a profession or trade.

I won't be obnoxious by saying that a brotherhood is when two males are born of the same mother... but i guess i just did.

When a person thinks of brotherhood, the time of the Hijrah springs to mind when the Prophet (SAW) appointed "brothers" between the Ansar and the Muhajiroon.  This was a brotherhood not of kinship and blood but of faith... something we desperatley need more of nowadays.  However, this brotherhood was more of an appointed type rather than figurative as the "League of Brotherhood" was dissolved after the Battle of Badr when zakat and war booty brought wealth to the Muslim.  It must be noted that one of the reasons for the establishment of the brotherhood was because the Muhajireen had left everything in Makkah and were literally penniless or at least close to being so.

However, the definition of brotherhood is also quite broad... nonetheless would you call a non-muslim a "brother"?  Innama Al-Muminoon Ikhwa.

Just my 2 cents.

Brotherhood?  Hmm, I think that the other brothers have highlighted most of the important points.

If I can add one thing: respect.  Not just respect for the leaders but respect between the brothers for each other and for the common ideals that they share.  An association of men is just that: a brotherhood is something more.  I think that the difference between an association and a brotherhood is this mutual respect for each other and the common ideals.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!
i have to say brothers this is an interesting topic..
I'd say brotherhood is something that binds a group of people together i.e a single cause.
Taking the case of Muslims i'd say though there are differences we all have a common goal...to try and please Allah as much as we can.
