| Assalam-u-Alaikum, A little more than a week left before my very first class and less than five days before I get on my flight to Pakistan. I really don't know what to expect. I'm not used to the idea of choosing my own subjects... over here we are given a fixed timetable of all the subjects. Whats the deal with it? Any other advise concerning college, paricularly in regards to conflicting times of classes and Salah? Thanks a ton, and Jazzak-Allahu Khair in advance. Wassalam-u-Alaikum |

If that is correct, then you don't have to worry about choosing subjects. From what I know medical schools in Pakistan have a fixed set of courses (at least during the first few years). It is not like undergraduate study in the US where one has to take tons of general courses before s/he declares a major. Also, here one does have more freedom of coursework but a large fraction are still pretty much the same. All major campuses in Pakistan have nice, huge mosques! And there are no classes during dhuhr and by asr time all classes are off. How many students actually attend dhuhr is a different question... Oh, if you have never studied in Pakistan or have not lived there for an extened time, be prepared for a cultural shock! Behaviors of people will appear weird, to say the least. Their values would appear distorted and you will notice a lot of hypocrisy. The educational system may also confuse you. I went through the same when I moved to Pakistan from Nigeria. With time you will adjust. Find good and sincere friends. Good luck! Wasalaam. |

| Assalam-u-Alaikum, yes Asim you're right about the fixed courses... that's why i was confused about the subject choosing thing! Phew, at least that's all cleared up, Al-Hamdulillah. I'll be attending the Aga Khan University in Karachi Insha-Allah... no I'm not Aga Khani, I am Sunni, Al-Hamdulillah. Wassalam-u-Alaikum |

| slm, Okay guys, this is it! I'm here posting this message from my cousin's home in Karachi, and should be moving into the hostel in a couple of hours. Classes start tomorrow. What I need from you guys right now is that you PLEASE make Dua' for me that generally everything goes well, but especially in regards to my Islamic well-being and academic future. Make dua' that I settle in easily and have a good time for the five years that I should be here, Insha-Allah. PLEASE make dua' that I do my parents proud! Thanks.
