Siamese twins and Islam

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

The Brits may have heard of this one.  I was watching the BBC, when a story came up about a pair of siamese twins that were born.  Unfortunately, they could not live a life in that condition since one of the twins was "sucking the life blood" of the other since one had more of the lungs than the other etc. i dont know the details.  Anway, the doctors, therefore decided that a separation was the only alternative to ensure that at least on of the twins would survive.  However, the parents were Roman Catholic and objected against the procedure, since they claimed that the separation would "go against God's will" and took the doctors to court.  The court ruled for the doctors, but the parents are doing an appeal or whatever its called.  And of course, its the innocent ones that get caught in the midst as the twins have still not been separated.

I was wondering what would be the Islamic ruling on this?  In my humble opinion wouldn't it be correct to perform the surgery since saving the life of a child is at stake?  Otherwise both would die and thats no good.  I don't recall any hadith to do directly with siamese twins but I do know that since this is a worldly thing (as opposed to acts of worship) you can do whatever you think is right as long as there is no text (Hadith or Ayah) against it.

Wassalam-u-Alaikum

Assalamu alaikum,

If I can remember correctly, I once heard Hamza Yusuf say somewhere that if something is not according to the Fitrah, then we must strive to make it so.  It is certainly unnatural to be joined together with another human being!  It is a "disease", and to cure it is the better thing to do, in my opinion.

Alas, I think it's another one of those things that need a shaikh's consultation.  Amazing how little knowledge we Muslims possess nowadays!

Wallahu a'lam.

walaikum salaam wrt,

one of the principles of islamic law is that we choose the "lesser of two harms".

there was actually a case of siamese twins of a pakistani family in montreal which aired as a documentary on canadian television and also in the US on some learning channels.

there case was very similar in that if something was not done, both would eventually die. they did try to separate the two and after a few weeks one died. they even showed the janaza and the parents praying at the mosque. it was very sad.

aslaamu alaikum

well the thing about this case in Britain is that some Muslim groups have objected to the separation of the twins, for the same reason as the Roman Catholics are objecting...that it is against God's will to knowingly take a life and also that it is "better" or more natural to let their lives run their natural course.
Anyway, i think the court has ordered for them to be separated.
