Cannibal 'turns veggie' in prison

A Filipino cannibal who killed and ate a priest said people should no longer fear him because he turned vegetarian during his time in prison. Noberto Manero has been released from jail after serving a 12-year sentence for murdering the Italian priest.

When he was freed, he said he wanted to move to an area where there were few priests, claiming he "no longer has a taste for men of the cloth". Manero told reporters he had converted to Islam and become a vegetarian while in prison, the News of the World newspaper reports.

He said: "It is true that I ate one priest but that was a long time ago. I no longer have a taste for men of the cloth. People need not fear me for I am older now and wiser and I eat only cabbage and lentils.

"during my time in prison, I converted to Islam and became a vegetarian so it would be strictly against my beliefs to eat anyone at all now. I have also asked my parole officer to move me to the north because there are very few priests there."

Assalamu alaikum,

The way I see it, if the guy did indeed accept Islam, then he's our brother in Islam and we should respect him and wish the best to him.  What he's done in the past is in the past.

Remember Hind?  The wife of Abu Sufyan?  What'd she do?  She basically had the liver of Hamza ibn AbdulMuttalib (r.a.) for lunch during her time of ignorance.  When she accepted Islam, she was scared that the Prophet (pbuh) will not forgive her.  But he did.

And Hamza was his beloved uncle!

Imagine that!

Wassalamu alaikum.

that says it.  Incidentally is it allowed to be a pure vegetarian in Islam?  I mean not eating meat at all?  Wouldn't that constitute forbidding what Allah (AWJ) made Halal?

*hmm... at least he won't mistakenly eat a cow from albany and get food poisoning... OK! OK! DONT HURT ME PLEASE! I TAKE IT BACK! I TAKE IT BAAAAAAAAACK!

Wassalam-u-Alaikum

the usual reply to the vegetarian question by scholars i've heard is that you can eat vegetarian if it's a preference of yours or you want to be healthy or something, as long as you don't think it's "haram" to eat meat...

AA,

The "source" was the NEws of the World.  Anyone who lives in the UK knows that anything that is written in that paper has to be taken with a VERY large pinch of salt (or maybe in this case with a very large piece of tenderizer?)
