http://www.arabia.com/article/0,1690,Life29541,00.html Saddam commissioned the work in 1997 to thank God for having escaped unharmed from a life full of dangers September 24, 2000, BAGHDAD (AFP English) - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has taken delivery of a copy of the Quran he ordered written in his own blood to thank God for escaping unharmed from his long political career, Iraqi newspapers reported Sunday. The special-edition Quran, the Muslim holy book, took three years to finish and was handed over to Saddam during a ceremony Saturday at the Dar Al Nasser presidential palace in Baghdad, papers said. The Iraqi leader commissioned the work in 1997 for his 60th birthday to thank God for having escaped unharmed from "a life full of dangers, during which I will have lost a lot of blood." The press gave no indication how much blood Saddam provided for the team of Iraqi religious leaders and calligraphers to complete the work. However, Ezzat Ibrahim, vice president of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council, told papers: "You can imagine the quantity of blood required for the holy book, which comprises 6,666 verses and 336,000 words!" Saddam, head of the ruling Baath party since his accession to power in 1979, has projected a more religious image since the 1991 Gulf War, promoting steps to develop Islam in Iraq, such as building mosques and banning alcohol in restaurants and hotels. |

slm, That's pretty disgusting I must say. I wonder if he's actually *read* it. This part is interesting:
Saddam, head of the ruling Baath party since his accession to power in 1979, has projected a more religious image since the 1991 Gulf War, promoting steps to develop Islam in Iraq, such as building mosques and banning alcohol in restaurants and hotels.
but it's probably propoganda to prevent the poor illiterate masses from one day rising up and getting rid of him like they should |

salaam, just a side note... there are not 6,666 verses in the Qur'an. Imagine how scary that is for a Christian to read, who believes that "666" is the sign of the devil. I wonder what kinda slick missionary came up with that number. I think the actual number is like 6,236. |

By writing the Quran in blood?! This person is crazy! Quran is not a hunting prize that one can put up on the wall! It is meant to be implemented. |

Assalamu alaikum, Guys, guys, let's look at the bright side here! At last we have a Qur'an now which nobody will dispute about touching with or without wudoo! Because surely, there is no need to make wudoo to touch the blood of Saddam! One may be required to make ghusl afterwards though! [Sarcasm ... do I have to say these things?] |

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh, proudtobemuslim, heh, actually I'm pretty sure that number is accurate, cuz I went through the Quran and added the ayaat up myself. I was so tired of hearing different numbers from different sources I thought, hey I have a Quran, I can do math...kinda... so hey... :) |

slm I saw the pictures but didn't notice 'blood'... i guess the writing was too small to discern, if it was ink or blood. Wassalam-u-Alaikum |
