OPRAH WINFREY SHOW LOOKS AT TREATMENT OF WOMEN IN MUSLIM COUNTRIES

On Friday, September 29, the Oprah Winfrey Show, one of the most
influential programs in America, deals with the issue of "Sanctioned
Violence Against Women" around the world. Much of the program examines
treatment of women in Muslim countries. (Check local listings for air
times.)

To view a summary of the program, go to:
http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/tows_past_20000929_e.html

To comment on the program, go to:
http://oprah.com/email/reach/email_reach_comments.html

POSSIBLE TALKING POINTS: (As always, be POLITE. Explain why you DID or
DID NOT believe the program was accurate or balanced.)

If a particular society oppresses women, it does so in spite of Islam,
not because of it. Stereotypical portrayals of Muslim countries could
lead viewers to believe that acts of violence against women are somehow
linked to Islam.

More than 1400 years ago Islam eliminated the chattel status of women,
prohibited the pre-Islamic practice of female infanticide and gave women
full control over their earnings and wealth. The "modern" concept of the
pre-nuptial agreement is ancient by Islamic standards. Muslim brides
have always had access to this legal protection.

Other rights granted to women by Islam include the right of inheritance,
the right to initiate divorce and the right to own a business. (The
Prophet Muhammad's wife Khadijah was a prosperous businesswoman.) The
first martyr in Islam was a woman, as was the first person to accept the
Prophet's message from God.

As Dr. Jamal Badawi, a North American Islamic scholar, outlines in his
book "Gender Equity in Islam," Islam also grants women the right to
receive child support, to face equality before the law, to participate
in political affairs, to seek employment or an education, to accept or
reject a marriage proposal, and to be free of spousal abuse.

are protectors, one of another..." (Quran 9:71)

Assalamoalykum,

Was the title of the show about women in Muslim countires? I watched the show and yes, almost every women was covered. I never heard her say the word Islam or islamic/muslim countries. But then i didn't watch the show from the very begining. i probably missed the frist 15 minutes of it.

What she said on there is the sad reality and that no one does anthing to stop it from happening. But of course, that doesn't mean that that is what Islam teaches and that its happening because of Islam. Its happening because of stupid cultural practices, poverty, and ignorance.

It would have been nice if Oprah had brought some covered Muslim women who are active in these type of things. Trust me there are plenty out there.

In arab countires, honor killings are common among Christians too. But you can't really tell them apart from the Muslims because the arab women cover too. they wear the scarf. A lot of them. The Christians over there are a lot different from the Christians in the western countries.

I guess Oprah always bring people who are well known to  the western society, like authors, doctors who are famous, and of course acters.
It's probably because she wants the people to get involved. But in this show I thing she wasn't very objective.

even if Oprah didn't attack Islam openly, the people will still get a negative impression about Islam and Muslim women because the women were covered.

I would like for Oprah to do a show about how the Western society opresses women.

From what I heard (and I didn't see the show), but didn't they show women covered and saying that people in these places are oppressed?  Implying that Muslim women are oppressed?

Hi, everybody,

I watched the whole program and I found it to be more about sanctioned violence against women(FGM, honor killings, the prevelance of rape in the West) than opression per se.  I don't think there was a mention of Islam, or any other religion for that matter, although I was huffing and puffing on my treadmill while I watched so I could have missed something :)

even if oprah did not mention anything about islam - yes you can bet it was implied --- but i think the more important issue is that this IS happening in our countries. and yes, there is a lot of violence against women here as well, of that there is no doubt -- and im sure oprah has already covered such topics.... at first i was getting all defensive when i heard of this.... then i realized that these kind of atrocities really do happen and yes, many many times its under the name of islam, wrongly of course -- this is the issue at hand folks. what can we do about it?

As Salaam Alaikum,
Yes the question is what can we do about it? Are there any organizations that are working to give propper Islamic guidance to these countries and their leaders? Or at least let them know that we are aware of these problems and want them to do something about it?

Assalamoalykum,

Yes, there are organizations working with these women and trying to eradicate such Jahilya practices. Why couldn't Oprah have shown Muslim women working for Muslim women? Muslim women organizations from the US work with Muslim women organizations in those countries.

Why did she have to focus the stupid camera, after a story, on a masjid? I mean come one! Show something else for a nice scenery. Like a waterfall or something. I don't know.

Salaam,
I agree.  This is how America tries to break down Islam but avoid legal issues. They do stuff like this so people will continue with their belefs about Islam and muslims but we can't really sue them for it because technically they never *said* Islam supports violence against women. Tragic. I think we need to get more control of the media as a group and get the word out to the masses (not just a few people at school or at work) that Islam does not support such behavior.

There are literally thousands of American and European women who except islam weekly if not daily. These are women who have grown up around "women's lib" and equality of the sexes and all that. Women who have faced discimination and opression for their gender and for their race if they are a "minority", yet they still except Islam in staggering numbers. So if Islam is so degrading to women and so opressive, why would these women become muslim? Why would an oppressed group in this country (women of color particularly) adopt a religion that opresses them more? They wouldn't. This needs to be explained to so many Americans, maybe they will see the truth insha'Allah

in case any of you didnt get a chance to watch the show visit that website given in one of the posts up above.....it gives a very good idea on what the show was all about and also u can visit the message boards and read some opinions

what bothers me the most is how i have noticed that a lot of you on this message board seem a bit paranoid....u seem to think that everyone is out to destroy islam??? if that is soo then why are sooo many converting to it??? geee think about it

But as far as Oprah's show goes.....i was stunned...i mean i heard about this stuff before but not the personal stories....this stuff is really sickening...and upseting and here i am huffin and puffin -- i practically have steam coming out of my ears....and yes while most of the cases she presented were Islamic women...she didnt say Islam supported that...although when u think about it....is this kind of stuff happening in non-islamic countries?????
if anyone has any examples please inform me cuzz i cant think of any

ok im gonna go study now i have a test tomorrow
i better get offline before i go nuttzzzzz

Ignorace really is bliss...the less u know...the less u got to think about.... its just tooo bad i dont live in ignorance.
